I had decided to go to Wolverhampton/Birmingham in September or October. But I realized I don't like flying, or more accurately the hanging around at the airport. So I changed my plan and I'm going to Newcastle-upon-Tyne instead, I can take the ferry. I did that in 2014 and it was fun.
Normally you have a day in Newcastle before returning to the ferry, but my sister and I stayed in Newcastle 2 extra nights so we could do more than just shop for a couple of hours. I want to do that again. We had a private room at Euro hostels, which was okay. But I really hated the bathroom pod. So now I'm looking for another hotel. Suggestions are welcome, it doesn't have to be very cheap hotel, but not too expensive and walking distance from the city centre. |

I stopped at Sleeperz quite often, which I thought was pretty good, albeit quite basic, and reasonably priced. It's a very modern hotel near the train station. The other one I liked was the Grey Street Hotel . It's even nearer to the city centre and very nice indeed. It would probably be a little more expensive than the other one but in one of the beautiful old buildings on Grey Street. If you want a special meal, I can recommend Blackfriars. It isn't cheap, but it's in a beautiful setting and the food was great last time I ate there. Last edited by Bilbo1967; 04-30-2017 at 04:17 PM. |

Listening to the carillon of the Dom playing for May 1. I thought I'd recognised the previous song, but the one the carillonneur is now playing is definitely the the theme tune of Beauty and the Beast, so it might be Disney night. On Friday and Saturday she also often has a theme, depending on what's going on in the city or in the world. When Bowie died she played his songs, the same with Prince, and when the film festival is held she plays film music.

If there isn't much difference in price, I'd definitely go for the Grey Street hotel.

I am adding up how much I have spent on e-books, e-readers, and accessories since my first Kindle from Christmas 2010.
It's kind of depressing. I wish I had a good tally of how much I spent on paper books to compare it to. That would help me feel better I think. I know how much I spent at Amazon but that's only 21 books (which add up to over $500*); I know I bought a lot more books than that. *Two of those were reference books that I still use and were about $100 each. Edit: And to top it off, this was my 1,500th post. Last edited by Dazrin; 05-02-2017 at 08:53 PM. |

Save a little bit of my sanity.Right now I am trying to figure out where the riot is in relation to my building to see if I can leave work safely. About 10 minutes ago there was a large bang then riot police ran past my building and we could see the mob only a block away. |

Next month my sister and I are finally going to Russell Howard's show (tickets went on sale in December 2015, we thought it was for June 2016 but found out we had to wait a year longer).
We've decided to make a weekend out of it. The performance is on Sunday, we plan to get a hotel room from Saturday until Monday. It isn't super busy in the store in June, so I should be able to leave after consulting hour. Then we have Saturday afternoon and all day on Sunday to do fun things in Amsterdam. I'm now looking for hotels, we planned to book during our vacation in two weeks' time. We still weren't sure if we wanted to splurge on a hotel or go budget, but looking at what's available it looks like we will go for luxury (I don't feel like have to travel between the hotel at Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam city centre). |

A change of plan for the vacation. My sister was to join me on Thursday evening and our father would pick us up on Monday. However, one of her best friends has her hen/bachelorette party that weekend. So she moved her planning around and now we'll pick her up en route to the vacation park on Monday and on Wednesday she's going home.
I'm feeling slightly guilty that I'm happy that I have an extra day and a half all to myself, plus that it's the second half of the week (so I can really recharge my batteries when she's gone home). We had planned to do some fun cooking on Friday. We're going to raclette, where we each have a small pan (or two) and cook miniature sized meat and vegetables and whilst waiting for the meat to get done you stuff yourself with baguette. I was already looking for a butcher in area to get the meat platter for two. But now we're going to do it on Tuesday and I'll order the meat from our own butcher and will pick it up on Monday morning. |
