Ok different model I guess but not much better. The Chinese just haven't grasped the concept of an ereader really I am afraid...
The Hanlin is make by Chinese and have several very good eBook Readers. I think, perhaps, you have over generalized.

Probably cost you $3 in gas to take it to Walgreens ) But yeah that's good.

That's always possible. All the ones I have had experience with made by the Chinese were shall we say "format challenged" but I don't pretend to have any knowledge of them ALL.

You know i had actully Got a Texet EB somthing/Alpha 700 tablet from ebay used for $100 bid about 2 weeks ago but it arrived bricked & some light dings on the unit.

thats why i wanted that walgreens one because i was back to the drawing board.

I finally heard from Texet tech support today suppose to have a img file soon, but i'm suppose to send it back to the guy in a couple of days when he works out the ups insurance.

Maybe the file will restore it, and i'll have something after all, but it doesn't sound promising from knowing it was from shipping. (at least thats the sellers story)

If we forget about software problems, somebody like deslstar screen quality? Is it better than E-ink?

Hardware is fine mostly, no telling about long term durability, but I find the screen res is good and the controls are ok. The screen seems a bit narrow since they're prob converting a media player type screen but looks fine anyways. With white and black text its higher contrast than eink. I've only read it indoors so I dont know about outside visibility.

I just don't know. Most people that swear by e-ink seem to want no backlighting at all. So I would guess they wouldn't consider it as good as e-ink. I sorta like a backlight or really like a reflective lcd that doesn't have a backlight.

Right now its hard to forget all the software problems. Its obviously better for bringing up color pictures or playing a color video.

Other than that I think it would mostly depend on if you like a backlit screen or not.

If you're still reading Freddie I found some new bugs for you to fix. I was reading an epub last night and I increased the font size and it took me back to the beginning of the book. Then once I got back to where I was reading and started turning pages it kept skipping stuff like I was still at the smaller font. Occasionally changing font sizes would also cause the screen to get all staticy and it would reboot the reader. I'm using the firmware thats on your web site.

Scott, yours is okay to read on? Nothing I put onto mine has any formatting at all, no paragraphs even. Everything is run together. Not to mention that the power button still doesn't work - and isn't going to, I know by this time.

So mine will have to go back. Too bad, I like the design fine.

Me wonders if Freddy came here just to keep the bait dangling awhile longer and pull in a few more fish before the thought that the problems are NOT going to be fixed became glaringly obvious and everyone in this big pond stopped buying.

I wouldn't say ok, its bearable. No formatting and the book I'm currently reading all the ""'s are coming out as weird characters. Obviously it has no HTML ability. I'm going to guess the only way this thing would read stably is to convert whatever you want to read to text before loading it.
If your power button doesn't work then how do you turn it on? I know my power button wont do anything while the usb or power plugs are in it.

Maybe they will fix software problems someday...

Well its always possible. They only got a few more days to fix html display before I send mine back.

I still find it very suspicious that as far as I know, nobody had gotten info on what warrenty it has. The owners manual refers to as least 2 things that if you do them will void the warrenty but I didn't see where the terms of the warrenty were ever listed.
Granted if and when I return it in a few days the warrenty will be a moot point but anyone planning to give them a chance past the 30 days Walgreens takes returns would tend to be quite interested in the warrenty assuming it really has one.

I was also thinking is it a propriety cable or a normal usb cable?

It might be either the pins on the openbook or the pins on the cable that are used to flash the rom.
As an update to my problem I got to use another computer (xp based system) which was able run the update.
