Having a hard time getting anything to download with the Aldiko software. I can access the catalog via html, but not xml. It sees the book list but it says ERROR 404 NOT FOUND when downloading...doesn't display cover art either.

I have it set to Aldiko in the software. Going to test ODPS next and see what happens.

The problem is across all devices and just started happening after using the new version (I think)

As far as I know nothing has changed in the new version (I assume you mean 2.4 beta 4) that should affect Aldiko. I do not have an Android system, so cannot test Aldiko myself. I am not sure if any of the regular developers have Android/Aldiko either. Do you know if it is possible to run Android in an emulation mode under 32-bit Windows or Linux that could also load Aldiko for testing purposes?

If something IS identified that affects Aldiko please let us know what it is, and we will see what we can do about fixing it in Aldiko compatibility mode. Having said that it is worth checking that you are using the latest Aldiko release. I know a short while ago someone had a problem with Aldiko that they said was fixed when they went to the latest release.

I am really struggling with how to install this. I have downloaded calibre2opds-2.3-WINDOWS.exe file. When I double click on it, it opens up like a zip. I have read the online documentation which indicates for windows 7 I should open a cmd window and type install.cmd.

Shouldn't I just be able to click on the executable file and the program begin to run through its' install process? I think I am missing something very simple. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

This is very strange the .exe file should just run as the installer. Are you using 32-bit or 64-bit Windows? I assume that you have the Java runtime installed as this is a pre-requisite.

The install.cmd file should only ever be used if you are installing from the ZIP package - not the Windows .exe variant. I would be interested to know where it says use that file if installing under Windows? If running the .exe installer you should simply get the screen shots shown in the documentation.

I note that you mention the 2.3 release. Despite it being labelled beta, the 2.4 beta 4 release is probably the best release to be using. We are very close to the final 2.4 release.

I am running Win 7, 32 bit. When I double click on the .exe file, it shows a window saying "extracting" which is similar to what you would see if you are trying to extract files from a zip file. I tried the same thing with the 2.4 version and get the same results. It is almost as if the computer sees the .exe file as a zip file, not an executable.

The sequence of events should be:

- A prompt from Windows UAC (User Account Control) asking if you want to run this program - you need to say yes to this

- A dialog for a few seconds that says "extracting". This is quite normal for most installers.

- The extracting dialog disappears and then one appears asking you to select the language (choice being English or French). It is possible this has gotten hidden behind another Window? Pressing OK on that Dialog brings up the first of the main installer dialogs.

If that sequence is not working do you have java installed (it is required for the calibre2opds installer to work correctly)? One way to check is to open a Command Window, and then simply type the command "java" (without the quotes). If Java is properly installed then you should get a message giving all the command line options for the Java command.

- A prompt from Windows UAC (User Account Control) asking if you want to run this program - you need to say yes to this This works fine and I click YES here

- A dialog for a few seconds that says "extracting". This is quite normal for most installers. The extracting is exactly what I see. No problem here.

- The extracting dialog disappears and then one appears asking you to select the language (choice being English or French). It is possible this has gotten hidden behind another Window? Nothing hidden that I cannot see - simply not getting this language box.Pressing OK on that Dialog brings up the first of the main installer dialogs.

Also just to be sure, I went to the Java website and validated that I have the most recent version of Java runtime. Literally after the extracting process, I get the exe file open with the listing of everything contained within it. I don't see any type of language choice box which is what I would expect to see.

I am not sure what to suggest at the moment.

You could try downloading the .jar version of the installer. As long as Java is installed you should be able to run that directly as well.

I am struggling with very interesting issue.
I was able to generate catalog of books (epub), about 3900, in my public folder in dropbox, using Calibre2opds (the last beta). I have no problem accesscing the catalog over the internet - all of the things e.g. annotations, arts, search in web databases are OK, BUT not all books have download links. I mention that when there is no annotations, search in web databases, there are no download links, where the above are present download is possible. I used Aldiko, Moon Reader+ - nothing. If it's important my encoding is CYRILIC.???
Please help me.

Not sure what the problem might be. It is worth checking that for the books that show problems you actually have the book in one of the Included Formats you have listed in calibre2opds on the Advanced Customisation Options tab. If you are using Aldiko also check that you have Aldiko compatibility set.

Assuming that the above does not show up a specific problem then it could well be something to do with the CYRILIC character encoding. I am reasonably certain that will never have been explicitly tested. Could you then consider raising a bug on the calibre2opds Project Page? It would be useful if you could attach the following to the bug report:
- At least one of the book.xml files from the book folder in the generated catalog so that we can check if there is any download link inside the file at all.
- The log from the last generation run. If nothing else this will show what generation time options you used.
- If it is not too sensitive, the calibre metadata.db file so we can try and recreate the problem using your database. Ideally mention the names of some books exhibiting the issue.

Hi! Great tool! A few quick suggestions I'd like to see personally:

I generated a catalog for my 2700+ books and was disappointed that There was no Alphabetical Title index.

I would like to have an option for ignoring tags. The vast majority of tags in my collection are automatically downloaded via metadata updates.

I would like to have the ability to catalog based on categories... in particular... user-generated categories. I organize my Calibre library via a user-identified category with over 100 sub-categories (games, history, government, medical, etc.). This would also allow cataloging by isbn or published date, etc.

In particular... the thumbnail display in html is rather wanting... I'd like to see something similar to the cover view in Eric's Movie Database... rather than having to identify the book by some other means before seeing the cover.

All in all, absolutely wonderful tool!! I offer these suggestions with the utmost humility, knowing I have no qualifications to criticize. If I have raised an issue from a past post... please be kind, there are a lot of pages and I skimmed the thread with the best intentions.

The All Books section is a list by title.

This would be easy enough to do. No-one else has asked for it up to now. Currently you can filter the tags to be used, but not supress that section of the catalog completely.

How are you storing these categories in Calibre? Because of the way that calibre2opds works it would be non-trivial to organize the generated catalogs by arbitary fields. Support for calibre user-defined fields is something that we would like to add at some time, but is a huge change which has not been fully designed yet (let alone implemented).

I am not sure how you would see this operating. I assume that you have tried the "Browse by Cover" view of the HTML catalogs as well as the thumbnail view? One has to bear in mind that anything that is implemented has to be possible in static HTML as at the time the user browses the catalog and downloads books the calibre metadata database is no longer being used.

Have you read the online documentation? It is possible that it might answer some of your questions. If not any suggestions on ways to improve it are always welcome (and as it is a wiki you can make changes directly).

Awesome. I used the wiki and it said suppression of the all books section would cut down on generation time... I will use the all books generation next time.

I'm glad I raised a novel (and easy to implement) idea.

Quote:

I have one user-defined column titled 'category'. Each of the sub-categories is a member of an alphabetically sorted drop-down menu from this column.

Well... I was almost dead-sure I used the Browse by Cover view... but I was wrong... it was late... apologies. Yeah I just wanted a static catalog. I have nearly 100k books and figured it would be nice to have a catalog to take with me on my phone in case I ever considered buying something... I could check to see if I already had it.

Anyway, thanks for the reply, hope to see one or both of those issues addressed in due time. I love the tool regardless. I stopped making use of metadata tags long ago because it was too much work... I thought the user-defined category was pretty elegant... but now it's coming back to haunt me, lol.

All the best!
