Happy Memorial Day to those in the U.S.

Now, the reason for my post . . . .

The Internet Archive has a great number of non-fiction books that I want. I love IA books because they are free. However, most of them leave a lot to be desired, maybe especially in the appearance of the text.

But, a number--though not relatively large in comparison to IA (especially considering all of the different editions that IA sometimes has of a single book)--of those books are have been cleaned up, etc., and they are located on other sites. Gutenberg.org is the site that first comes to mind, but I know that there are many other websites with significant "holdings," I suppose that you would call them.

What are some of the sites that you know of with the greater number of free holdings (I know that the Hathi Trust, and other places, have a lot of free ones available, but they also have a lot of ones with restrictions of various kinds; please include those, too)? There may be a place on the Web to go quickly to to find that information, but offhand I don't where it is.

Insurrections of the Mind: 100 Years of Politics and Culture in America by Franklin Foer is $1.99 at Amazon:

Quote:
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of The New Republic, an extraordinary anthology of essays culled from the archives of the acclaimed and influential magazine.

Founded by Herbert Croly and Walter Lippmann in 1914 to give voice to the growing progressive movement, The New Republic has charted and shaped the state of American liberalism, publishing many of the twentieth century’s most important thinkers.

Insurrections of the Mind is an intellectual biography of this great American political tradition. In seventy essays, organized chronologically by decade, a stunning collection of writers explore the pivotal issues of modern America. Weighing in on the New Deal; America’s role in war; the rise and fall of communism; religion, race, and civil rights; the economy, terrorism, technology; and the women’s movement and gay rights, the essays in this outstanding volume speak to The New Republic’s breathtaking ambition and reach. Introducing each article, editor Franklin Foer provides colorful biographical sketches and amusing anecdotes from the magazine’s history. Bold and brilliant, Insurrections of the Mind is a celebration of a cultural, political, and intellectual institution that has stood the test of time.

Contributors include: Virginia Woolf, Vladimir Nabokov, George Orwell, Graham Greene, Philip Roth, Pauline Kael, Michael Lewis, Zadie Smith, William Faulkner, Ralph Ellison, James Wolcott, D. H. Lawrence, John Maynard Keynes, Langston Hughes, John Updike, and Margaret Talbot.

We're not really friends, remember. Whew!

Besides, my manners are already impeccable. In fact, Miss Manners consulted me numerous times in writing her book; And I noticed that she failed to credit me. What gall! Speaking of bad manners!

The bargains should be in this forum, and the subjects that you mentioned on this thread; I don't know where the non-bargain fiction books would be, if there is a place at all on MobileRead for them (I very rarely buy a book or audiobook that is not a bargain).

Welcome to posting on MobileRead. I'm sending some "getting started" karma.

Bargain @ $2.99 USD/$3.99 CAD from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, probably just through today only, since HMH tends to rotate their offers monthly (couponable/VIP-eligible in Canada but not the US; prices should be the same at all the usual retailers):

Six Memos for the Next Millenium by the late Italian author Italo Calvino (Wikipedia), an influential experimental literary novelist and essayist who was a member of the Oulipo creative movement alongside the late Umberto Eco. This is a translation of his posthumous collection of lectures on the subject of various qualities of literature and has its own Wikipedia entry.

At the time of his death, Italo Calvino was at work on six lectures setting forth the qualities in writing he most valued, and which he believed would define literature in the century to come. Here, in Six Memos for the Next Millennium, are the five lectures he completed, forming not only a stirring defense of literature, but also an indispensable guide to the writings of Calvino himself. He devotes one “memo” each to the concepts of lightness, quickness, exactitude, visibility, and multiplicity, drawing examples from his vast knowledge of myth, folklore, and works both ancient and modern. Readers will be astonished by the prescience of these lectures, which have only gained in relevance as Calvino’s “next millennium” has dawned.

Also, @ $1.99 each, a few more non-fiction titles by notable literary fiction authors, if you think you might be interested:
  • A Wedding in Haiti by Dominican-American author Julia Alvarez (Wikipedia), apparently one of the most influential modern Latin American literature authors (I've read and enjoyed a couple of her novels, and we've even gotten one as a freebie in the past). This is a travelogue memoir about family relationships, out from Algonquin Books (couponable).
  • Boone: A Biography & Lions of the West: Heroes and Villains of the Westward Expansion by award-winning poet & novelist Robert Morgan (Wikipedia); biographical histories about various figures of westward settlement in the US, also out from Algonquin Books. Lions of the West was a 2012 SIBA Book Award for non-fiction recipient, according to Wikipedia.
  • A Widow's Story: A Memoir by National Book Award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates (Wikipedia), about the unexpected sudden death of her first husband, and the ensuing experience of its aftermath, out from HarperCollins (non-couponable).
