The GloHD and the H2O both have paperclip reset holes.

That's a good point. Why do we have reset holes anyways? Holding down the power button has acted as a reset for all of my phones for as long as I can remember. What makes eReaders any different?

For my Kobo Glo, sometimes when the software is frozen on the e-reader, the power button is not able to reset. So the paper clip hole becomes useful. Once I reset via paper clip when I didn't need to, and I lost all my customized fonts, margins etc.. The hole reset is more hardcore.

You might be right. It happened just once. For now, my Kobo is well behaved, thanks to the Kobo Forum troubleshooters!

So, things may still need dedicated reset "button", i.e. small hole. |

I've had to use dedicated reset buttons on virtually every consumer electronic device I've ever owned. I think in general all modern consumer goods are more less unreliable.

Kindles don't have a reset hole - you just hold the power button in for about 20s to reboot. I've not heard of anyone having problems with that, so it certainly doesn't seem that a reset hole is mandatory.

It's going to sound like a strange question, but how do you know the power button didn't work? If it does, it turns the device off and the screen doesn't change. And if it didn't work, you would probably see the same thing. And when it didn't work how long did you hold the power button down? 10 seconds is probably enough, but I usually suggest 20 seconds.

I kept a paperclip taped to the the back of my first PalmPilot, circa 1998, for the frequent freeze-up. My current Aura 6" has never frozen in over a year of use. I hope the Aura One is as stable!

I even went for about a minute of holding power button. Didn't helped, for some reason CoolReader crashed in such way that only reset was able to reset device. And yes, I tried with two consecutive power button presses, as I saw that screen stays the same when device is crashed (KSM changes screen when reader is shut down, i.e. starts script for power off that causes different screen when reader is powered off). On koreader same book crashed it, but with power button I was able to "escape" situation. Koreader and CoolReader use same epub rendering engine AFAIK, but there are obviously some differences. I'm sure if I didn't had reset "button" I would need to wait battery to run out, as I'm not into opening my device to disconnect battery. As this book can be opened on my PC without problem (I use Sumatra PDF for epubs), I never suspected problems with it before I experienced them. So, not having dedicated reset could be very merry experience on any device. And yes, I didn't tested that book on nickel, I don't use it at all. It may work on it without problem. |

That's the only occasion I've really missed a physical reset switch on an ereader. |

Most of these devices are running linux, with ordinary filesystems underneath. Once in a while, the filesystem gets an error, or the system goes long enough that it thinks it needs to check things out, and then nothing happens on the device until the filesystem checks are done. Of course, people worry at this unexpected behaviour, but it mostly works itself out given time. Resetting the device does not "fix" these kinds of problems, it just defers the fixing until the next reboot, when it starts all over again. So, I agree with DNSB; if you're device isn't responding after some resets, just leave it be while powered up and plugged into the charger. There's some chance it will fix itself without interference.

This may be true for same cases, but in my actual case it isn't true.
I tested this easily, tried to open same book twice and I'm 100% sure that problem is caused by book, that only reset (or waiting for battery to run out) solved it. Also, you misread what DNSB wrote. Read again. Kindle needed battery emptied, this reset device. After that battery needed to be charged again as it was completely empty. It wasn't just question of waiting long enough. |
