A Head for Murder (per SYKM, apa One Head Too Many) is the second in the Tom Musgrave series by Peter Tonkin. It has recently dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US.

link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HHH74ZS

Spoiler:
Quote:
London 1594.

Tom Musgrave rescues a beautiful girl from under the feet of a mob playing football on London Bridge.

But her breathless thanks are drowned by horrified screams.

The football has vanished.

In its place, a severed head is rolling down into Southwark, into the jurisdiction of Tom's old friend, the Bishop's Bailiff Talbot Law.

And Talbot must now investigate the crime.

The skull has fallen from the Great Stone Gateway, where the heads of recently executed traitors are displayed. But the decapitated victim was no traitor and her head, like her sex, is markedly different from the others up there.

Tom and Talbot begin their investigation with a search down-river. All too swiftly they discover a woman's headless body....But this body does not match the head.

A killer is at work.

And no one knows where they will strike next.

A Head for Murder’ is a thrilling Elizabethan murder mystery, full of intrigue and suspense.

In addition to some more noir-ish stuff, Dave Zeltserman also has written a few excellent (IMO) Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin pastiches. These are mostly short stories and novellas, but Julius Katz and Archie is a full length book. It is a US Kindle Countdown deal right now, at $0.99 for about 5 1/2 more days before going up to $5.99.

link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0050VI5OM

Spoiler:
Quote:
The Julius Katz detective stories have been a favorite among mystery fans since first appearing on the pages of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine in 2009, winning a Shamus, Derringer, and two Ellery Queen Readers Choice awards. JULIUS KATZ introduced readers to Boston's most brilliant, eccentric, and possibly laziest detective, as well as his sidekick, Archie, a tiny marvel of computer technology with the heart and soul of a hard-boiled PI.

Now in Julius Katz and Archie's first full-length mystery, the stakes have never been higher when a famous Boston mystery writer, Kenneth Kingston, tells Julius he wants to find out who's planning to kill him. The problem is almost everyone in Kingston's life has good reason to want to kill him, and this case soon plunges Julius and Archie deep into the world of murder and publishing.

Look also for THE JULIUS KATZ COLLECTION.

Two titles in the excellent (IMO) Kate Henry baseball mystery series by Alison Gordon have recently dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US.

Night Game is the third title in the series.
link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Q35SNVO
Spoiler:
Quote:
Spring training takes a grim turn when sports journalist Kate Henry and a fellow reporter find a local freelancer, Lucy Cartwright, dead on the beach. And when one of the Toronto Titans, Domingo Avila, is arrested and charged with the murder, Kate is pulled into yet another police investigation.

Believing that Avila was framed, Kate sets out to prove his innocence. And with her police-detective boyfriend, Andy Munro, at home in Toronto, enlists the help of a local newspaper editor and a criminal defence attorney to expose the real killer.

Set in 1990’s Florida, Night Game is the third title in the Kate Henry mystery series.

Striking Out is the fourth title in the series. Per SYKM, this was a finalist for the 1996 Arthur Ellis Award for Best Novel.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Striking-Out-K.../dp/B00Q35SO54
Spoiler:
Quote:
With the boys of baseball out on strike, Kate Henry finds herself with time on her hands. Passing on the chance to sit in on contract negotiations in New York, Kate instead turns her attention to issues closer to home—helping her boyfriend, Andy Munro, recover from a shooting, and finding Maggie, a local homeless person now gone missing under mysterious circumstances.

When Maggie’s long-lost family suddenly turns up trying to find her, Kate questions their motives . . . and their possible involvement with the murder of a man who turns out to be Maggie’s husband.

Set in 1990’s Toronto, Striking Out is the fourth title in the Kate Henry mystery series.

The first title in this series, The Dead Pull Hitter (wonderful pun in the title ), has been at $0.99 for a very long time. I'm listing it here for convenience for those who might want to try it first.
link: http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Pull-Hitt.../dp/B00Q35SNX2
Spoiler:
Quote:
For the first time in their history, the Toronto Titans are on a winning streak and headed for the World Series—a dream come true for sports reporter and baseball fan Kate Henry. But when a pair of murders hits the team at its very heart, Kate finds herself in the middle of the investigation.

Covering both the end-of-season excitement and the murders, Kate is drawn closer and closer to the killer—and to handsome Andy Munro, the police detective assigned to the case. And when some explosive evidence lands unexpectedly in her lap, Kate is given the key to solving the case.

Set in 1990’s Toronto, The Dead Pull Hitter is the first novel in the Kate Henry mystery series. It is followed by Safe at Home, Night Game, Striking Out, and Prairie Hardball.

I've been waiting fairly impatiently for Aunty Lee's Chilled Revenge, the third book in Ovidia Yu's delightful (IMO) Aunty Lee series, to come out this month. It's out now, and is attractively priced in Kobo's India store at 134 R, which is about US $2.00. It may also be couponable, if you have a coupon still that will work in the India store.

link: https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...hilled-revenge

Spoiler:
Quote:
Rosie “Aunty” Lee—feisty widow, amateur sleuth and proprietor of Singapore’s best-loved home cooking restaurant—is back in another delectable, witty mystery set in Singapore.

Slightly hobbled by a twisted ankle, crime-solving restaurateur Aunty Lee begrudgingly agrees to take a rest from running her famous café, Aunty Lee’s Delights, and turns over operations to her friend and new business partner Cherril.

The café serves as a meeting place for an animal rescue society that Cherril once supported. They were forced to dissolve three years earlier after a British expat killed the puppy she’d adopted, sparking a firestorm of scandal. The expat, Allison Fitzgerald, left Singapore in disgrace, but has returned with an ax to grind (and a lawsuit). At the café one afternoon, Cherril receives word that Allison has been found dead in her hotel—and foul play is suspected. When a veterinarian, who was also involved in the scandal, is found dead, suspicion soon falls on the animal activists. What started with an internet witch hunt has ended in murder—and in a tightly knit, law-and-order society like Singapore, everyone is on edge.

Before anyone else gets hurt—and to save her business—Aunty Lee must get to the bottom of what really happened three years earlier, and figure out who is to be trusted in this tangled web of scandal and lies.

The first two books in the series are also available at good prices:

Aunty Lee's Delights is the first in the series and is 88 R (approx. US $1.30).

Spoiler:
Quote:
This delectable and witty mystery introduces Rosie "Aunty" Lee, feisty widow, amateur sleuth, and proprietor of Singapore's best-loved home-cooking restaurant

After losing her husband, Rosie Lee could have become one of Singapore's "tai tai," an idle rich lady. Instead she is building a culinary empire from her restaurant, Aunty Lee's Delights, where spicy Singaporean meals are graciously served to locals and tourists alike. But when a body is found in one of Singapore's tourist havens and one of her guests fails to show at a dinner party, Aunty Lee knows that the two events are likely connected.
The murder and disappearance throws together Aunty Lee's henpecked stepson, Mark, his social-climbing wife, Selina, a gay couple whose love is still illegal in Singapore, and an elderly Australian tourist couple whose visit may mask a deeper purpose. Investigating the murder are Police Commissioner Raja and Senior Staff Sergeant Salim, who quickly discover that Aunty Lee's sharp nose for intrigue can sniff out clues that elude law enforcers.

Wise, witty, and charming, Aunty Lee's Delights is a spicy mystery about love, friendship, and food in Singapore, where money flows freely and people of many religions and ethnicities coexist peacefully, but where tensions lurk just below the surface, sometimes with deadly consequences.

Aunty Lee's Deadly Specials is the second in the series and is 99 R (approx. US $1.50).

Quote:
Rosie “Aunty” Lee, the feisty widow, amateur sleuth, and proprietor of Singapore’s best-loved home cooking restaurant, is back in another delectable, witty mystery involving scandal and murder among the city’s elite.

Few know more about what goes on in Singapore than Aunty Lee. When a scandal over illegal organ donation involving prominent citizens makes news, she already has a list of suspects. There’s no time to snoop, though—Aunty Lee’s Delights is catering a brunch for local socialites Henry and Mabel Sung at their opulent house.

Rumor has it that the Sung’s fortune is in trouble, and Aunty Lee wonders if the gossip is true. But soon after arriving at the Sung’s house, her curiosity turns to suspicion. Why is a storage house she discovers locked? What is the couple arguing about behind closed doors? Where is the guest of honor who never showed up?

Then, Mabel Sung and her son Leonard are found dead. The authorities blame it on Aunty Lee’s special stewed chicken with buah keluak, a local black nut that can be poisonous if cooked improperly. Aunty Lee has never carelessly prepared a dish. She’s certain the deaths are murder—and that they’re somehow linked to the organ donor scandal.

To save her business and her reputation, she’s got to prove it—and unmask a dangerous killer whose next victim may just be Aunty Lee.

Sufue thank you for the recommendation on the Ovidia Yu books.

I just went to buy the three of them and was most surprised to see that since you posted Kobo India seems to have had a re-think about the price, now:
Book 1: AUD8.56 (RS448.19)
Book 2: AUD9.63 (RS504.29)
Book 3: AUD 13.61 (RS712.49)

Mmmmm .....

Edit
It's still cheaper not to buy them in AU or NZ, but I'll wait to the price drops again on Kobo.

On no! I am so sorry....I must have just been lucky!

The first two in this series have been really fun, and the third looks to be fun too, although I haven't yet had a chance to read it. It's sitting at the top of my TBR list right now.

Only Time Will Tell is the first in the Clifton Chronicles by Jeffery Archer. It's 50 Rs in Kobo India right now, which is about US $0.75.

link: https://store.kobobooks.com/en-ca/eb...me-will-tell-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
The Clifton Chronicles is Jeffrey Archer's most ambitious work in four decades as an international bestselling author. The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in 1920, with the chilling words, 'I was told that my father was killed in the war'. But it will be another twenty years before Harry discovers how his father really died, which will only lead him to question: who was his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who worked in Bristol docks, or the first born son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line? Only Time will Tell covers the years from 1920 to 1940, and includes a cast of memorable characters that The Times has compared to The Forsyte Saga. Volume one takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford, or join the navy and go to war with Hitler's Germany. In Jeffrey Archer's masterful hands, the reader is taken on a journey that they won't want to end, and when you turn the last page of this unforgettable yarn, you will be faced with a dilemma that neither you, nor Harry Clifton could have anticipated.

The Dead Season is the third in the Sandro Cellini series by Christobel Kent. It has recently dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008WNTOO0

Spoiler:
Quote:
“Combines rich atmospherics and fully realized characters in her outstanding mysteries featuring Italian PI Sandro Cellini.” — Publishers Weekly

Every August, Florence shimmers in the summer heat. But this year the heatwave is fiercer than usual, and the city’s inhabitants have fled to the cool of the hills and beaches of the surrounding countryside. So it is no surprise that amidst the shrubbery of a normally busy roundabout, a corpse lies unnoticed, bloating in the humid air.

Sandro Cellini will not be joining the crowds of holidaymakers this year. The former policeman turned private detective has a case: a man who seems to have vanished into thin air—leaving his pregnant young wife alone in the city.

As all Florence sweats it out, Cellini attempts as best he can to grapple with his case and the complications it throws up. And when the weather finally breaks, it brings with it a shocking revelation.

The Stranger (apa The Gallows Bird) is the fourth in the Patrik Hedström and Erica Falck series by Camilla Läckberg. It goes up and down in price a fair amount, and has recently dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

A string of suspicious deaths points to a potential serial killer who has turned his eye toward Fjällbacka and her dark forests, where two children vanished decades before

A local woman is killed in a tragic car crash, but it isn’t a clear-cut drunk driving case. The victim’s blood contains high alcohol levels, yet she rarely drank a drop. Meanwhile, a new television series begins shooting in Fjällbacka, and as cameras shadow the stars’ every move, tempers start to flare. When a drunken party ends with an unpopular contestant’s murder, all eyes turn to the cast and crew. Could there be a murderer among them? The ratings spike as the country tunes in to a real life murder mystery.

Detective Patrik Hedstrom finds himself increasingly unable to focus on the strange circumstances of the first case, but what if that holds the key to a series of other unsolved cases across Sweden? Under the unforgiving media spotlight, Patrik tackles his most challenging investigation yet.

Frank Duffy needs his best detective on the case, but his best detective, Ash Levine, quit a year ago.A tenacious, obsessive detective, Ash resigned after Latisha Patton, the witness in a homicide case he was working, was murdered. Without his job, Ash is left unanchored-and consumed with guilt that he somehow caused Latisha's murder. When he's asked to rejoin the force, Ash reluctantly agrees. Getting his badge back could give him the chance to find Latisha's killer.Ash dives in headfirst into the shadowlands of Southern California to investigate the ex-cop's murder. But even when he has a suspect in custody, something about this case doesn't sit right with Ash, and he continues working the increasinglydangerous investigation while quietly chasing leads in Latisha's murder.Unable to let either case go until he has answers, Ash finds that his obsessive nature, which propels him into a world of private compromises and public corruption, is a flaw that might prove fatal.
