Got it. I oversaw that there are two points from where you can exit KOReader. One has to modify a second file of KOReader, see 1.2) Modification of KOReade3; and install the updated KoboRoot.tgz from the archive start_koreader_exitmessage03.zip.

Hi, I just got a Kobo Aura One and attempted to install KSM8 on it. I followed the instructions for the KA1 here (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...&postcount=221), but I wasn't clear on how to handle the file KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip. I ended up extracting the zip file, updating the files in KoboRoot.tgz with the ones from KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip, and copying the updated tgz into the .kobo directory. It prompted me to handle update, which I did. But nothing seems different and wifi doesn't work.

For now I'd like to uninstall KSM8 so I can get functional and try again later. I found these instructions (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=277966), but I don't see an uninstall option in KSM8.

Can someone please give me some guidance?

Thanks very much advance!

P.S. Also, please let me know if there's a better place I should be asking this question. Thanks!

I am sorry you are having problems with KSM. What you did, should work. But my intention was different. There a two steps involved: The first is to install KSM as it is explained in the first post. The second step is as follows (I quote from here)
  • extract KoboRoot.tgz from the uploaded archive
  • copy the extracted KoboRoot.tgz into .kobo of your device
  • safely eject and disconnect your device
  • select (in KSM home) "handle update" > "install update" (do not select "install partial update")
  • wait until the device has rebooted

I do not have my device with me, from memory it is:
(KSM home) tools > ksm diverse.msh > del KSM.sh

Thank you very much for the quick response! I appreciate the help, as well as your efforts in building this for everyone!

There's one part I'm confused by; I know your directions on the post for the KA1 say to follow the instructions on the first post for installing KSM8, and then follow the instructions on the KA1 post (which you quoted here). My question is about the step "extract KoboRoot.tgz from the uploaded archive" from the KA1 upgrade post. On that page, there isn't an archive that contains a KoboRoot.tgz, there is only the KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip file. Which archive did you mean?

Maybe a better question is this; if I take the actual 4.2.8283 firmware file from downloads.kobobooks.com, extract the KoboRoot.tgz, merge in the files from your KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip, and then repack it into KoboRoot.tgz and copy it to .kobo, should that work?

Again, thanks very much for the assistance!

EDIT: Forgot to mention - I was able to restore to the original firmware by just downloading it from download.kobobooks.com, extracting the zip file and copying the KoboRoot.tgz file to /.kobo on the ereader. Thanks.

By archive I meant the file KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip, from which you can extract KoboRoot.tgz. If you do not see KoboRoot.tgz, your extraction program might do all extraction steps automatically without you seeing the individual steps (KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip KoboRoot.tgz > KoboRoot.tar > some folders with files). But then I wonder how you extracted KoboRoot.tgz from the original firmware update file; and also from the KSM 08 package.

No! You would have to merge of KoboRoot.tgz of KBStartMenu_08.zip, KoboRoot.tgz of KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip, and KoboRoot.tgz of Kobo firmware update package ( for instance kobo-update-4.2.8283.zip), and repack it into KoboRoot.tgz. But why should you do this? Just to clarify the (fully extracted) content of KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip should overwrite the corresponding files of KBStartMenu_08.zip; and the resulting files of this merging process should overwrite the corresponding files of the firmware update file.

I would like to mention that this did however not remove the files of KSM that are located at the system partition.

You are spot on correct! Evidently, MacOS will automatically extract a nested archive if it is the only file in the containing archive. I usually do these from the command line, but this time I let the Mac "help" me.

The other thing that threw me a bit was the size difference between the KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip file and the KSMStartMenu_08.zip. I understand completely now that it's just a subset archive.

I'll try it again soon. I have to relinquish it to my wife for a few days as it's my b-day gift (that I ordered for myself - she was a good sport and let me play with it a bit)

Once again, thank you very much for your assistance and for the quick diagnosis.

Hey tshering, I just installed KSM08 on my Aura One after a factory reset with 4.2.8283, and I"m running into some problems.

1) USB enable does not work.

2) If nickel is ever booted, then I can no longer boot into KOReader, until device is rebooted. Trying to start it through the nickel koreader loop just boots nickel again. Otherwise booting straight into nickel and then using "exit_nickel.png" on nickel and then "start_koreader" on KSM just does nothing. I have installed "KSM_patch_4.2.8283".

Thanks in advance

There is a similar problem reported on another threat. Could look at my response there and see whether it helps?

I updated the KSM 08 patch for Aura One some days ago (the file name is KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip). There were since then 2 reports that it does not work (no usb in KSM, Koreader does not run when nickel has already run in the same session).
Did the patch work for anybody?

I have indeed installed 03b. However, this may not be the reason why USB does not work: right after I installed KSM08, but before installing the aura one patch, I tried enabling USB and it also did not work.

re: your response to the other person with USB errors, I believe the only suggestion was to use a recent nightly of KOReader? because I am using that.

let me know if I can help you with any more information.

One of the reasons for introducing the Aura One patch was that on the Aura One enabling USB did not work in KSM. That is why I thought that possibly something with installing this patch went wrong for you and Braid.
The problem that KOReader does not run after nickel started only with 4.2.8283. In response to that I modified start_koreader.sh and merged this with the then version of the Aura One patch. Since I have two reports that things to not work, and no report that it worked for somebody, there is a chance that I did some mistake.

I removed KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip, since it was possibly incomplete. I will check later and upload a new version.

So I installed 4.2.8283 on my GloHD. My process was to uninstall KSM, update the firmware, then reinstall KSM, taking the opportunity to update koreader to the latest nightly (build 818 at the time) while I was at it.

I installed KSM and then the KSM 4.2.8283 patch version that was available last night. I also made the emergency power off modifications mainly because I wasn't sure if they were actually required or not so I wanted to play it safe in case they were.

I can start both nickel and koreader from KSM, but I can no longer switch directly to koreader from nickel by tapping on the koreader png image. Not sure if that's a known issue right now, just wanted to chime in with my experience. For now, I can just exit nickel completely when I want to switch to koreader, but it would be more convenient if it could work the way it used to where I could switch back and forth between the two without having to exit back to KSM to do so.

Another thing is that if I try to switch to koreader from within nickel, koreader will crash, and then I'm not able to start koreader again at all from within KSM until I reboot the device.
