Can I serve up jb folder which is not necessarily located in kindle root directory?
Sorry, I missed this one today - -

On the Kindle: One file that is named: jb
On the server your using, the folder named: jb

if your serving the folder, then the url for the Kindle's browser is:
a/jb

OR

if your serving the **contents** of the folder (I.E: you put all of the *.html files in your web-root), then the url for the Kindle's browser is:
a

I used `php -S 0.0.0.0:80` and changed the hosts file of my router (openwrt).

Ah, I am sorry, could you tell me the make/model of the router?
Possible also mention the OS on your PC, just if I need that information.

That means "any interface, any address" - -
Sort of a "big stick" approach, but if it works . . . .

knc1, would you know how I can redirect "a" to your IP?

My kindle connects to the my router, which is connected to the modem. It is my own private wifi. I am currently viewing my router's web-based setup page, but haven't found a redirecting option so far. I'm also on live chat with a rep from the router's company.

Then, open the jb.zip file -
Go to the jb subdirectory (a.k.a: folder) -
find the jb file -
connect your kindle by usb cable to your pc -
transfer (copy) the jb file to the top of visible storage (right along side the 'documents' directory) -
safely remove (or eject) -
disconnect the usb cable -
on your KINDLE - select the 'experimental' browser -
in the address bar enter the single letter 'a' (no quotes) -
press enter -
follow directions that are now on-screen
I do the hard reset before you jailbreak or during the process it will do yourself ?Before I go to the page "a" I need to connect the wifi? And how will I know that the jailbreak was successful

I just successfully jailbreaked my Kindle Voyage B0530907 and Kindle PW3 B0D42204... And decided to setup my server 46.149.222.220 as a DNS and web server for a domain to make this process a bit easier for less advanced users.

A bit simpler instruction:

1. Download jailbreak files (the jb.zip)

2. Connect kindle to your computer, open zip and copy file jb to main directory of your kindle

3. Eject Kindle, disconnect from computer

4. Find device that you will use to share your network over Wi-Fi. It can be your router, it can be a rooted Android phone, it can be your PC or Mac.

5. Configure device to use my server as DNS: 46.149.222.220 (router or iPhone or unrooted Android) or just edit hosts file (PC, Mac, rooted Android, jaibreaked iPhone, your favourite rooted Wi-Fi fridge) and add line:

46.149.222.220 a

6. Share Wi-Fi from your device.

7. Optional check. Connect something to your shared Wi-Fi (not kindle) and check whether you can open http://a webpage. If you see it, you can proceed. If not, something went wrong, try again.

==== from this moment you should act fast to not let kindle download update ==

8. Connect Kindle to your shared Wi-Fi

9. Open Experimental Web Browser, open http://a

10. Follow instructions on screen.

==============

If something went wrong, turn on Aeroplane Mode in your Kindle before figuring out what is off, to interrupt possible firmware download process

Hope this helps

Copy jb to /mnt/us. (root directory mounted when attaching kindle to a computer)
Serve up jb folder on port 80 on a web server.
DNS redirect "a" to the web server via man in the middle, changing the server name on your network, adding an entry to your DNS server on your router, etc. (if you specify a wireless network and click advanced, you can put in a static DNS server)

i.e. after all of this, browsing to a should open up index.html.

Open the browser on the kindle, browse to the url "a". (with no quotes)
Ah, so - the source of some of the problems -

If you put the folder named jb in the web-root of your server, then the url on the Kindle should be:
a/jb

If you put the contents of the folder named jb in the web-root of your server, then the url on the Kindle should be:
a

If your set-up requires that you install a dns server locally -
then just use that to direct 'a' to my public jb server, that way you don't have to set up your own server.

Thank you knc1! There's some misunderstanding initially but Branch has clarified this for me.

The only obstacle is to set up the DNS forward to "a" on my mac. I tried internet sharing on my mac to share thunderbolt ethernet connection to wifi (which kindle connects to), but failed to find any option to redirect DNS to "a" in this path (changing /etc/hosts does work for web browser on mac, but not for any device connects to wifi from mac). I do not have any other ways since I can not change university public ethernet or wifi. Maybe I can only try this on my house router later...

I'm having an issue after the jailbreak. I don't know where to ask so I'm going to ask here:

I installed KUAL and it works, and applications work. However, when I try to install the screensaver or the font hack, they disappear from the root directory and "Update Your Kindle" is grayed out. It deletes itself or something.

For anyone searching this, it never worked, I just used MR installer in KUAL.

Yes, the router is Cisco Linksys E1200. Computer is on Mac OSX 10.11.3 El Capitan.

@Stwor, please also could you explain how to do step 5?

I edited my mac's host file using sudo nano /etc/hosts

Sorry, I don't know either of those.

Look for something called: DNS masquerade

Others in this thread with OSx have posted how they did the jb.
Perhaps those posts can help.

Very stupid question - a factory reset is going to delete all the books from my Kindle, right? Is there any way to avoid that?

It should be easy from this point. Connect your Mac to internet using cable, open System Preferences > Sharing and:

1. Select Share your connection from Thunderbolt Ethernet
2. To computers using: Wi-Fi
3. Click Wi-Fi options and configure settings like name and password
4. Click OK
5. Check the box next to Internet Sharing

That's essentially step 5 on Mac.

It js already 1:40 am for me, so we can continue tomorrow

Copy them to your computer, copy back after done.

I had books backed up by Amazon, so I jailbroke without resetting and it worked, but don't do that unless you'd be okay with losing everything.
