Countdown to Sync

Well, if you like audiobooks as much as I do then April has been moving full bore (and I do mean bore). If you saw our sock-shapred host's post here, then you'll already know Sync is coming May 7. I'm excited. I'm impatient. In an attempt to channel that energy into something positive I'll post some freebies I've stumbled across that haven't been mentioned yet each week for the next couple of weeks to tide you over.

I had planned on starting out with RadioArchives, but someone beat me to it earlier in the week (see above). Instead, let's talk about TryAudiobooks. This is a promotional site set up by Random House to try and hook in curious new listeners. They've been using this site instead of their primary web site for the last couple of years for most of their freebies, and they have only just recently updated the site. You had to be thorough to catch this one, but hey - it's me. If you go here, you can get "The Secret History of The Pink Carnation" by Lauren Willig. It looks to be a kind of historical fiction, romance, and thriller rolled into one. If you're too lazy to go to the page, here should be a direct link to the audio.

That's it for now. I'll try and keep this up for a couple of weeks to tide you over until the real fun begins. By then our strangely-silent host will likely return from chasing bananas to share all the Sync-related love. Until then...

Enjoy!

I just bought a slew of Jacqueline Druga audio books for $1.99. These are of the post-apocalyptic flavor. How did I get them so cheaply? First I borrowed the ebook via Kindle Unlimited (which I have for half price through June), then the Audible edition was available for $1.99. Most of the ones I got are narrated by Andrew Wehrlen, who from the samples sounds great.

I've done the same thing with a couple of Steve Konkoly action books. I don't mind paying $1.99 for an audio book, if it's not available elsewhere (library, Scribd).

Now if the libraries would just get the newest Joe Ledger audio book, I would be ecstatic!

I don't see a download link. It just opens a new tab and starts playing the book. How do you get it to download? Do you have to do it through their app? (Which appears to be Apple only)

Book Description
The life of Ethan Aaron Douglas is chronicled as the ten-year-old joins his grandfather for a life on the Chesapeake Bay. With his grandfather as captain of a steamboat traveling between Norfolk, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, the boy learns quickly about life on the water. From hurricanes to blue crabs life on the Bay changes quickly. Learning Shakespeare and witnessing a hanging are just part of the life along the river. Ethan Douglas' life brushes past major events in the United States from slavery to the underground railroad and the days leading up to the civil war. How did those who lived along the Potomac deal with active warfare during the War Between the States? Life was always a war on the water with pirates shooting at each other as well as Maryland and Virginia oyster police. Ethan's younger brothers and sisters soon join him as they grow older and become entrepreneurs as the nation's capital city grows and changes.

From buyboats to newspapers the lives of the Douglas family become part of the history of the young nation. Oysters were the "white gold" of the east while railroads and shipping competed for freight. This book is the first in the series that will tell the story of life in tidewater Chesapeake Bay region from 1850 to 1950.

The Whispersync Audio
Buy the Whispersync audio companion, at the same URL as above if you want to, for just $1.99. It's 2 hours and 45 minutes long.

Wow, I've got the coupon already! They are fast, this time around.

I went ahead and got the Joe Ledger book, for under $7. Ray Porter does an awesome job narrating this series.

Audible is apparently price-matching iTunes audiobooks on sale for $5.95. I don't know if this is something new--I've only just begun looking a iTunes offerings since being given a gift card recently. The iTunes sale books are shown on the first page of the audiobooks tab if you download iTunes--I don't think you can access the sale list directly on the Web.

I looked for a few titles at Audible to see the reviews, and every one I checked was also $5.95 at Audible.

Thanks Catlady I always seem to forget about checking itunes for audiobooks.

I had to buy Before I Go To Sleep. This has been on my TBR list to read for a while. Maybe now I can cross it off.

I listened to a sample on Audible's website - it was in First Person, Present Tense. Is the entire book that way?

As far as I recall, yes. Since the premise is that the protagonist wakes up each morning with no memory of her life, the use of present tense is effective and even necessary. If you don't have a past, how can you use past tense?
