I think all your need is a google account to get the music and it can be downloaded through your browser or at least that's how it use to be.

You will need a credit card or payment method to purchase though even if it's free.

If you have a Google account (Gmail, Drive, Docs) then you already have a Play account (they're all one account). As the others said a payment method needs to be associated with the account even for free music, books, apps, etc. Music can be downloaded in MP3 format or/and streamed through your browser or the Play Music app on phones and tablets.

Yep, a Google account on a PC will work just fine.

Many of these no longer show up as free - for me in the US, at least.

However a bunch of them are $0.99, which is still a pretty good deal IMO. I picked up several at this price - if I liked, and didn't already have, at least one or two songs on the list, I figured it was still a good deal to pick up.

Still, wish I'd caught this when they were free...

I had a feeling they might not last long and I quickly realized I needed to stop picking and choosing and just get all the free ones as quickly as possible to be safe.
