That is pretty nasty. I never ran into this trouble, even after switching a couple of times to and fro 5.x. I'm not sure what would cause this. Did you install some extra apps perhaps?

Hi datanoise, just use the latest version by BruceLee. It never failed me, and I have upgraded regularly. Just lately I haven't because it works good and stable. There are some good instructions to install it, just follow it and you'll be ok.

My best guess: it's less expensive. I suppose that Kobo (and Amazon) are better customers for the E-Ink company, and therefore are able to negociate at better price and even get new screens in exclusivity for some times (like this new 7,8" screen at 300ppp from Carta generation).

I sent an email to the French site inquiring about the price of the Inkpad 2, and put in caps the word 'NEW' to signify that I was thinking of buying it. The word 'NEW' was in the title of my email, and I also used that word twice in the body of my text.

They responded with a link back to their site (which I had visited earlier) and which only lists the original Inkpad and NOT the Inkpad 2.

Such idiots!

I then sent a calm email back, explaining that their site did not list the Inkpad 2 - the one I was interested in - but rather the original Inkpad.

Let us ponder this for a moment, as we collectively ask this question: "What is the best way not to sell a new product, specifically, this product?"

Color me perplexed and (actually) amused.

ADDED: I should also mention that I was referred to the French site, after having written to the international site. They told me that the French site is the one that can ship to a USA address. By the way, if anyone is interested, the price is 40 euros to ship to the USA. But you might not get the correct Inkpad....you know.....the NEW one.

The French site are also the idiots who took my money and then gave me the silent treatment.

I ended up having to bring down the wrath of Pocketbook HQ on them.

"The Continuing Saga of Unbelievable Ineptitude" = Re Pocketbook.

I just received this email, copied below. You know, I think we have a scam going with this division of Pocketbook. I AM CERTAIN THEY TRIED TO STEER ME TOWARD THE NOW DISCONTINUED (or soon to be discontinued) INKPAD. (Please see my other post a few posts before this one for further clarification.)

Here is their latest email to me:

Dear Sir,

Unfortunately we don't sale this device in France.

Please consult our german site www;pocketbook.de

Best wishes,

PB France

Sorry to hear of your plight with the PB French division.

Even though PB HQ has been quite reliable in the past with providing accurate info, even they drop the ball occasionally. When I contacted them about replacing my first 840 (cracked screen) they gave me a decent replacement price and process details. I then needed a minor clarification about using Pay Pal and suddenly they no longer responded. After two more attempts to contact them went nowhere, I contacted the seller in Latvia (eBay) from whom I purchased the original unit. Told him the whole story and he offered to match their replacement price and shipped at a lower cost to boot! Transaction and (quick) shipment could not have gone any more smoothly.

Offer up this anecdote as an example of some real (unexplainable) disconnects with PB's CS and Sales.

The Inkpad 2 costs 187,47€ here in Germany... (cheapest offer I could find). They're not shipping to US though. You'd have to go through a forwarding service or ask someone you trust.

There's a seller in Italy ebay ( eeemarket ) that ships worldwide, 222€ + shipping

Thank you. The International division told me that they could not ship to me and that the French division could, and that I should contact them.

Unfortunately....someone's story is not correct. Or perhaps both stories....

Seems like the inkpad 2 is pretty similar to the inkpad 1. (well, it's 50 grams less and supposedly has a similar yet better Pearl screen).

Would be nice to see a real word comparison between the two of 'em.

Is there a way to speed up the boot or wake up process of the ink pad 1? It takes ages from pressing the on button and start reading

Excuse my brevity, sent from mobile on puny keyboard and rocking public transport

My Inkpad 840 takes about 5 seconds from coldboot to reading the last opened page. How long does yours take?

The main difference between the old and the new InkPad seems to be that they removed the light slider from the front. You have to change the light intensity in Inkpad 2 via onscreen menu.

This slider is something I use every day and would be missing very much, so I just bought me a second InkPad 1 before it's no longer available.

To shamaho: What brand and type/class of SD card do you use? Faster SD cards can speed up booting time, too. Class 10 has never let me down with booting in a few seconds. Disabling Wifi should speed things up, too.

Edit: Just measured boot time. My device takes 11 seconds from cold boot to reading.

Me too, I use that front slider very often, so I can activate the backlight when I switched off all other lights.

I don't use an sd card and I open my books with Coolreader, perhaps that makes my boot a bit faster? On the other hand, I didn't measure with my stopwatch, just counted out loud. Could be 7 secs, not 11.

Edit: just measured with my watch, it was 10 seconds. Sorry for reporting a fast time, it appears I count slowly.

I have an Inkpad 840 and love it but.......I find it has significant ghosting of text. It does it on various books and the ghosting will be there for a few pages then disappears...only to return 50 pages later. Anyone else noticed this?
