Eh, I was about to say the same. But now that The Temporary Agent has at least one review .... and that reviewer also was not impressed with last month's Time Heals No Wounds (which I just struggled through last night, just to find out who dunnit -- uggh) .... I decided to give it a shot. Free is free. I can always delete it. And the reviewer says it's better than the one I just slogged through.

I got that one too last month ( Time Heals No Wounds ) I started it but It seemed to me like the the translation was off. Or it was just an odd book. Your right BadgoodDeb , I should watch the reviews this time and see if something stands out, I usually give them a try.

With emphasis on slight.

This month's Kindle First selections are out, they are:

Everything We Keep by Kerry Lonsdale [Genre: Contemporary Fiction]
Quote:
Sous chef Aimee Tierney has the perfect recipe for the perfect life: marry her childhood sweetheart, raise a family, and buy out her parents’ restaurant. But when her fiancé, James Donato, vanishes in a boating accident, her well-baked future is swept out to sea. Instead of walking down the aisle on their wedding day, Aimee is at James’s funeral—a funeral that leaves her more unsettled than at peace.

As Aimee struggles to reconstruct her life, she delves deeper into James’s disappearance. What she uncovers is an ocean of secrets that make her question everything about the life they built together. And just below the surface is a truth that may set Aimee free…or shatter her forever.

A luminous debut with unexpected twists, Everything We Keep explores the devastation of loss, the euphoria of finding love again, and the pulse-racing repercussions of discovering the truth about the ones we hold dear and the lengths they will go to protect us.

From the Editor:

Spoiler:
Planning a funeral is nothing like planning a wedding. Aimee, the protagonist in this marvelous debut, has loved her fiancé, James, since childhood. She’s elated to be finally planning their wedding. But her plans are interrupted by earth-shattering news: James has disappeared and is declared dead after presumed foul play. Aimee finds herself at James’s funeral, her dreams of forever turned into an eternal nightmare.

Everything We Keep is absolutely mesmerizing. It’s a thrilling roller-coaster ride into the dark heart of a relationship and a family—I was astonished by the startling secrets, and how author Kerry Lonsdale wove everything together in the end. But most of all, it’s a ride that binds us to Aimee. It’s her journey from relying too much on others to finally depending on herself and learning what to let go of and what to hold on to that grabbed me from the beginning and relentlessly held me captive.

I’d rather escape into reading about family drama than live one. Buried secrets, the lies we tell, and what we do to protect what’s ours…there’s nothing that changes us quite like family.

Rage by Zygmunt Miloszewski (Author), Antonia Lloyd-Jones (Translator) [Genre: Crime Fiction]
Quote:
Bestselling Polish crime by award-winning author Zygmunt Miloszewski.

All eyes are on famous prosecutor Teodor Szacki when he investigates a skeleton discovered at a construction site in the idyllic Polish city of Olsztyn. Old bones come as no shock to anyone in this part of Poland, but it turns out these remains are fresh, the flesh chemically removed.

Szacki questions the dead man’s wife, only to be left with a suspicion she’s hiding something. Then another victim surfaces—a violent husband, alive but maimed—giving rise to a theory: someone’s targeting domestic abusers. And as new clues bring the murderer closer to those Szacki holds dear, he begins to understand the terrible rage that drives people to murder.

From acclaimed Polish crime writer Zygmunt Miloszewski comes a gritty, atmospheric page-turner that poses the question, what drives a sane man to kill?

From the Editor:

Spoiler:
It’s bubbling to the surface, threatening to boil over. Deep breaths, shifting feet. Control yourself; count to ten. Don’t let it send you over the edge, no matter what. Rage. Bestselling Polish author Zygmunt Miłoszewski demonstrates the power of this emotion to drive people to unspeakable acts in this gripping, unputdownable crime novel.

Teodor Szacki is a famous prosecutor, well known for bringing criminals to justice without putting a wrinkle in his suit and reporting the results on the evening news in a calm, clear tone to soothe the nation’s fears. He is working on a case involving crimes against known domestic abusers, and for reasons he doesn’t immediately understand, this case has Szacki feeling less impartial than usual. His instincts prove right: he soon receives a low-quality video of his daughter in danger. The only clear detail is the terror in her eyes.

Szacki’s race to save his daughter left me reeling and deeply unsettled—not by how unthinkable the crimes described are, but by how easily I could imagine myself in such a desperate situation, led not by thought at all but surrendering to unstoppable rage.

Doubt (Caroline Auden) by C. E. Tobisman [Genre: Legal Thriller]
Quote:
Meet Caroline Auden. The closer she gets to justice, the further she gets from the law.

When Caroline Auden lands a job at a top Los Angeles law firm, she’s excited for the challenge—and grateful for the chance to put her dark past as a computer hacker behind her. Right away, her new boss asks her to find out whether a popular GMO causes healthy people to fall ill. Caroline is only supposed to dig in the trenches and report up the ladder, but her tech background and intuition take her further than planned. When she suspects a link between the death of a prominent scientist and the shadowy biotech giant, she cries foul and soon finds herself in the crosshairs. The clock is ticking and thousands of lives are on the line…including her own.

Now this rookie lawyer with a troubled past and a penchant for hacking must prove a billion-dollar company is responsible for thousands of deaths…before they come after her.

From the Editor:

Spoiler:
I’ve always been a fan of legal thrillers, and my favorites are the David versus Goliath stories, like Erin Brockovich and John Grisham’s The Pelican Brief, both made memorable by Julia Roberts. I’m compelled by the hope that no matter how big the adversary, the little guy—everyday people—can get the legal justice they deserve when they’ve been wronged. And that’s how Doubt drew me in from the beginning.

In this legal thriller, a biotech giant has created SuperSoy, a genetically modified protein used in many popular food products. Backed by a dream team of lawyers, this company denies their product is dangerous. Even after people begin to die. With a huge class-action lawsuit at stake, the victims’ attorneys must find scientific proof that the Goliath SuperSoy is to blame. Like David, who used the unassuming slingshot to fight against Goliath, the victims turn to Caroline Auden, a guilt-ridden hacker starting fresh as a rookie lawyer.

Caroline’s commitment to help SuperSoy’s victims find justice won me over. Tenacious and resourceful, Caroline uncovers what her superiors couldn’t: a missing scientific journal article whose authors are suspiciously unavailable. When chasing the evidence puts her fledgling law career and life in danger, Caroline perseveres—and had me rooting for her all the way to the courtroom.

The Daughter of Union County by Francine Thomas Howard [Genre: Historical Fiction]
Quote:
Fourteen years after the end of slavery, Lord Henry Hardin and his wife, Lady Bertha, enjoy an entitled life in Union County, Arkansas. Until he faces a devastating reality: Bertha is unable to bear children. If Henry doesn’t produce an heir, the American branch of his family name will die out. So Henry, desperate to preserve his aristocratic family lineage, does the unthinkable.

When Salome, a former slave and Henry’s mistress, gives birth to a white-skinned, blue-eyed daughter, Henry orders a reluctant Lady Bertha to claim the child as their own…allowing young Margaret to pass into the white world of privilege.

As Margaret grows older, unaware of her true parentage, devastating circumstances threaten to shroud her in pain and shame…but then, ultimately, in revelation. Despite rumors about Margaret’s true identity, Salome is determined to transform her daughter’s bitter past into her secure future while Henry goes to extraordinary lengths to protect his legacy. Spanning decades and generations, marked by tragedy and redemption, this unforgettable saga illuminates a family’s fight for their name, for survival, and for true freedom.

From the Editor:

Spoiler:
A secret anchors the heart of this rich, riveting family saga, a beautiful tale of characters’ lives stitched together by the intimate, heartbreaking details of slavery. Henry, the white patriarch of a family that used to own slaves, has a daughter, Margaret. But what Margaret doesn’t know is that Salome, Henry’s mistress who was born into slavery, is her mother.

Margaret looks white, with her very fair skin. She’s grown up in a world of privilege, thinking Henry’s wife, Bertha, is her mother. When the explosive truth comes out, it throws Margaret and her family’s world off its axis.

Set fourteen years after slavery ended, this novel does not shy away from the horrors of that time. What it does, though, is look at this dark moment in history through many characters’ distinct, yet very human, eyes: young and older, black and white, those who owned land and those who toiled on it. It’s a powerful story, and a personal one for author Francine Thomas Howard. In fact, the germ of this story comes from the oral history passed down through the author’s family for generations.

What moved me most? That this is a family story. Yes, it’s a story of secrets, but at this novel’s core is a transcendent story of parental love and loyalty—no matter how layered and complex that may be—and the lengths to which a family will go to protect its own.

Midair by Kodi Scheer [Genre: Literary Fiction]
Quote:
“I had a secret: I wanted to leave the earth in a spectacular fashion. Specifically, by leaping from the Eiffel Tower.” So begins this provocative coming-of-age novel about a teenage girl bent on self-destruction and revenge, set in the City of Light.

It’s the summer of 1999, the end of a millennium. In the mind of Nessa Baxter, a girl from rural Illinois, Paris is the remedy for all of her woes. The death of her beloved brother and the betrayal by her classmate Kat has left Nessa bereft and doubtful about her future. She plans to exact revenge on Kat during their renegade French Club trip. Along with classmates Whitney and Kiran, the four girls embark on a series of misadventures in Paris. As part of her plan, Nessa starts a game of Truth or Dare that spirals out of control.

A suspenseful psychological drama, Midair is the story of a young girl’s descent into darkness and the secrets we keep, even from ourselves.

From the Editor:

Spoiler:
Midair is a provocative and bold coming-of-age novel that asks the question: How do we learn to forgive and forget? Perhaps some of us would rather forget the past. But this novel offers us the chance to revisit the emotional roller coaster of the teenage years, in a suspenseful, enthralling journey back to a haunting moment in time.

In Midair, Nessa Baxter reflects on a trip she took seventeen years ago, when she and three other girls launched their own rogue French Club mission. They begin a harmless game of Truth or Dare that quickly spirals out of control, becoming darker and more dangerous at every turn. Shocking truths about the not-quite-friends are revealed, leading to a dramatic conclusion at the top of the Eiffel Tower that still sends chills down my spine.

We all make mistakes in our youth—but what if we remain haunted by the consequences years later? How do we put them behind us and move on? Author Kodi Scheer answers these questions in this unforgettable novel that speaks volumes about what it’s like to be young and myopic.

Emotional Rescue: Essays on Love, Loss, and Life--With a Soundtrack by Ben Greenman [Genre: Nonfiction Essays]
Quote:
What songs have made up your life’s soundtrack? Which have captured your every mood and deepest sentiments? Pop music, like no other form of entertainment or art, is capable of articulating our feelings, desires, joy, and pain. In a few soul-grabbing minutes, artists from every genre—from Little Richard to Lou Reed, Willie Nelson to Wu-Tang Clan, Sly and the Family Stone to the Rolling Stones—can help us understand our place in our own lives.

This collection of short, sharp essays by New York Times bestselling author Ben Greenman (Mo’ Meta Blues), organized around a thematic playlist of songs, serves as a reminder of the lyrical power of songwriting and the sonic ability of pop to capture the human experience. Greenman’s wit, insight, and honesty are as sweet and satisfying as the hits (and the deep cuts) at the center of each essay.

From the Editor:

Spoiler:
Reading the witty, warm, and wise personal essays in Emotional Rescue reminds me that there may be no better soundtrack for success, or medicine for loneliness, than pop music. Songs for breakups, songs for loss, songs for good days and bad: often the stuff we play through our headphones is a way of pairing our pain and pleasure with the words and music of an artist, comforting ourselves with universal experience.

Following an intensely autobiographical path, the singular music and fiction writer Ben Greenman reveals how much the songs in his life have guided, or even rescued him from, his decision-making. It’s in the lyrics of pop songs that he goes searching for advice to spread to his family and friends, or just to make himself feel better about the passage of time. These essays, in other words, are a track-by-track tour of everything he knows about human relationships. Each essay’s playlist of songs adds a dimensionality to the experiences he describes—an awkward date, the isolation of airports, catching a friend in a lie—like a hologram of feeling.

Actually, maybe the only thing better for loneliness than pop music is pop music combined with intelligent, whimsical prose. Every time I return to Emotional Rescue, I come away uplifted.
