Kobo Firmware 2.6.1

Some noticeable changes I have seen with 2.6.1 on my Aura include:

• Kepub books stored on the SD Card show up in the front tiles.
• When opening PDF file is opened it is shown in full size (not thumbnail mode anymore).
• There are page numbers at the button of PDFs - takes up too much space.
• If you select the % read it brings up a menu reading stats (minutes left in a chapter, minutes left to the next chapter, process of chapters, overall minutes left).

The Mini got the new firmware right, but it's still not available for the Aura.
As someone confirmed earlier, the home screen change is for the Glo only. And regarding the dictionaries, it's not only the customed ones that need to be installed again after each update. It took me some time, but now I remember that I have to download all the dictionaries except the ones related to the interface language.

Really? not me...

you mean suddenly all but french (?) related dictionaries become unchecked and you have to re-add them and then resync? if so that is very weird and definitely shouldn't happen.

What is this a change from? we've had that on the glo for several of the past firmwares....unless you are referring to epub???

Really?? It happened to me with every firmware update And each time, the affiliate file was back to FNAC, displaying its logo when the ereader is sleeping.
For the dictionaries, just a couple of them are here: the French and the English-French (or the other way around, but definitely just one of them) for sure; maybe the English one.

Since the Aura doesn't want to update yet, I'll check if it behaves as the Mini in that regards.

Definitely something wrong. I have all the dictionaries installed (though a couple are currently custom dicts) and up until this firmware, nothing has happened with the dictionaries. The only exception was when they added a couple dictionaries in one of the firmwares and so I had to go through the process to add them, since they were only options until I downloaded them.

I don't use all the language dictionaries (there are a couple I never use...but maybe will one day ), but I use different ones regularly enough to know it's not only the interface related languages that stay...for instance I use japn-japn and german-german and french-french and never had to re-download them.

Are they suddenly unchecked in your "manage dictionaries" list or do you just get prompted to download when you try to use them?

And I think the FNAC thing you can't help...I don't have that, but I remember reading that you would have to keep editing that...

Actually that makes sense. Each time I download the Japanese dictionary, but there was some issues with it (was it fw 2.5.1?). So if they needed to replace it, maybe all my dictionaries went away.
Now I'm not so sure they were removed with each and every update, although that seems pretty close

Edit: I'm prompted to download them again. I usually have 9 of them.

I think the last time I was prompted was almost out of the box new when I had just signed out and in again and had to redo everything. So, I still say, weird.

Sure they do, 'cause Kobo is steering readers to use the Georgia font.
If an epub just opened with the "Document default" font the outcome would be totally different.

In the case that an epub contains embedded fonts the Kobo reader still does override it and forces the use of the Georgia font (in case of a serif font).
Which gives uncomfortable results
Style:
Regular: override embedded font, forced use of Georgia (when serif fallback)
Italic: uses the embedded font
Bold: uses the embedded font
Bold Italic: uses the embedded font
True small cap font: uses the embedded font

In this case have to switch manually to the "Document default font" to use the embedded regular font.

The firmware should open with the document default font.
In case if there is no embedded font present or a specific font family is not present on the user agent then it should fall back to use the generic font family.

The user agent should use the "Garamond Premier Pro" font and not automatically fallback to the predefined generic default font for serif fonts.

In this situation the Amasis font is present on the ua and the ua should use this font and not the Georgia font (which is the serif generic default font)

My Aura just updated to 2.6.1. Thank you, Kobo, for listening to us about the top margin. Much, much better, in my opinion. Since I was one of the people screaming about this, I wanted to publicly thank Kobo for listening to its users and responding quickly to the storm of protests. And I hope by posting this I don't start a new wave of protests.

So the top margin is FULLY restored to text as it was until 2.5.1 ?
Or is it smaller than with 2.5.2 but still bigger than 2.5.1 ?
I dare not upgrade till I know for sure.

Top margin is improved/smaller than 2.5.2 but larger than with 2.5.1. Somewhere in this thread, or one related, someone posted exact measurements. Personally, I'm staying with 2.5.1.

The top margin is about 5mm now. 2.5.1 was about 3mm so 2mm larger. With the font, font size and line spacing I prefer, about 2 extra lines of text per screen compared to 2.5.2. In point size, the margin changed from 8 points to 14 points.

BTW, the size of the top margin has varied with quite a few firmware releases. The worst was one when there was no top margin and you had to hold your Kobo just right to read the top line of text without the bezel covering part of it.
