Is Apple betting the farm on the new iPad (iPad3 or iPadHD or ?)?

It is definitely overpriced when you consider apple have over 50% margin, but when people are willing to queue for days to throw their money at apple, you can't blame them for riding the wave and milking their customers dry; apple is a marketing genius. Mind you, most tablets are overpriced, but not by as much as only apple has the economy of scales.

And this margin is greater with the larger capacity models - really, $100 for an extra 16GB?

Of course they keep the prices artificially high. They have to pay for all the lawsuits they are filing to ensure they can monopolize the market and maintain the artificially high price in the first place. I have purchased Apple in the past, but I refuse to do further business with a company that discourages competition through continuous frivolous litigation. Some of these stories would almost be laughable if they weren't so ridiculous,

You can't blame others for following the leader, if shortsighted. The point remains that tablets are overpriced, and the ipad more than the others due to economy of scales. There are several reports indicating the margin exceeds 50% - in my book, that's milking your customers dry.

And that $10 depends on the speed rating of the card... you can pay more than $100 for fastest cards so unless anyone knows speed of memory in iPad then $10 comment not really relevant...

I don't consider myself a lemming. I own a sony prs500, a prs505, a prsT1 and a Kindle 3,
plus a couple of fujitsu tablets and a hp compaq tc4200 convertible. I've always considered myself anti apple person preferring windows or linux ubuntu. The new ipad is a definite game changer for me though. I got the 32gig verizon 4g and don't begrudge them the price at all. In fact i lost the whole weekend using this thing.
The same excuses that i have been using all along about the older ipad compared to the e ink aren't quite correct in this case. No more eyestrain than i would have with the kindle at this point which really suprised me.

And what do you mean by margin of 50%... if you mean 50% of the trade price then that's no more than in many other businesses and if you mean 50% of the retail price then equally that's still not excessive for many businesses... unless of course you've never actually run any retail operations and don't realise that that is gross...

That is a class 6, a class 10 is about 15. Besides, you can smoothly play 720p video off that class 6, good enough for me.

Point being, we are all hurt by Apple's decision not to include an expansion slot. Slow or fast, that still would have been great to have. I am not criticizing Apple for charging $100 more for 16 GB, it is taking away these options that is the problem.

Well, perhaps like the stylus, now hopefully the others will start undoing those "customer unfriendly" design decisions.
