Yes, there are better ways to get protein in your diet. So I guess you're buying bottled water?

Aren't there treatment plants between the river and your faucet? Or doesn't that remove everything?

I am sure there are but I can't blame Blossom for not risking drinking the water.

Yes there is but would you trust the water after that? I wouldn't. The smell of chlorine is horrible. I'll stick to bottle. I stop drinking tap years ago.

I have to consider myself lucky. NYC has very good tap water, and I'll happily drink it. I've been in cities where I wouldn't, because of high mineral content. It's not harmful, but tastes awful.

I was in San Antonio years ago, on my way to Alamogordo, NM, but I don't know if that's anywhere near you, and I don't believe I drank the tap water.

My horrible memories are of Atlantic City, NJ tap water.

NYC water is good enough that scotch whisky fanciers I know would be willing to use it in drams that needed a few drops to open them up and release the full flavor and aroma. (Cask strength bottlings tend to require that.) They would normally use bottled water, and there was a discussion of which bottled water was best on a whisky mailing list I moderate. Poland Spring was considered acceptable. Dasani got thumbs downs.

This area has never had good drinking water. I thought the water in Tennessee was bad with its lead content but the water here is a different kind of bad.

The water treatment plant in the town next to me actually flooded in January they had to get the help from the National Guard to clean it up. It's an environmental nightmare every time the rivers floods. They try to cover it up as no big deal but I wouldn't drink any water that comes from the Meramac River.

I don't follow gymnastics so I'm likely off base but viewing the link I wondered if she was influenced by the audition scene in the movie Flashdance. Checking Wikipedia, I see the movie was made in 1983 so now I'm wondering if they were influenced by Nadia.

I'm lucky -- Aurora, IL has water that has consistently been voted the best tasting in the state. Or at least, so they tell us in our flyers.

Having never watched Flash Dance (shame on me!) I didn't realize how much Paula Abdul's "Cold Hearted Snake" video was based on it!!

Fortunately, NYC drinking water doesn't come from the local rivers. It comes from aquifers farther north. There was a neat commemorative exhibit in Grand Central Terminal a while back about the "sandhogs" who dig and maintain the tunnels through which water and other things come to NYC (or at least, to the Borough of Manhattan, on an island between the East and Hudson rivers.) (A lot of the early navvys were Irish immigrants, and I think they may still be a majority of the current group.)

There's a reservoir in Central Park that supplies a lot of the tap water in Manhattan, and reservoir levels are a source of concern in drought conditions.

(A local online apartment locator service had a hilarious poster where a selector for location was in the area of the Gowanus Canal, and the illustration showed a canal with things with tentacles and too many eyes in it. You really wouldn't want to drink the water in the canal.)

I feel lucky, the tap water in our area comes from the same source/spring as the water used by a big bottled water company. So it's a bit silly to buy bottled water for us.

When studying in the UK I did buy bottled water, the water was drinkable but it had a bit of a chlorinated taste to it which I didn't like. Luckily bottled water was cheap, although it was a bit of a bother to lug it from the supermarket 2km further down the road (the last year I stayed on a different campus and the supermarket was right behind it).

We buy "Nice" water brand. They are a store brand for Walgreens. A 24 Pak is $2.99 and it's the best tasting water we have found. No after taste, no metal taste. Just pure water. We use to pay $6 a case before we discovered we could get better tasting water for less.
