Ok Saving this one too as I was confused how to get boooks from Calabre to the tablet. I do have the cloud for Amazon. I see a drop box icon but never used it. This is on my lap top not any of the tablets.

TV has run a muck. I need to deal with it. OH Lord help the person that has to walk me through this one. I am just not a geek kind of person. BBL Sigh

Thank you Dennis. I also saved this for my Tablet file.

Do I understand you I can D/L Calibre on my laptop then connect tablets to it do add books to them from my Calibre Library?

PHEW was a simple fix. When all else fails re-boot.

It is only 92 degrees out side right now so I need to get some yard work done before it hits the 100 mark.

Thank you all for your help on this. I am going to dedicate time to work on some of this because I find I am reading just any book and forgetting the ones I really want to read because I can not find them.

There is an "Un-register" (or is it "de-register"? I doubt that) option in the kindle settings, probably on the first page or so. That's different from setting back to factory defaults, tho factory defaults might *include* losing the registration. Registration is connecting the kindle to a certain amazon account & email. So, to re-register is what you already talked about --- getting an amazon account for your mom.

If I am feeling really energetic I also stop at home depot for more pavers for the yard. I am working on patio pathway and another row wide under the clothesline. I can only carry 10 in the car at a time.

Sadly craft store for me is Joanns or 80 miles one way to I think it is Michaels. BUT Michaels is close to my small store I get glass. Unfortunately I need big bucks in hand when I go to buy glass cause I just can not resist buying this sheet or that.

I do the driving when we get into the cities. Hubby just not up to it now.
We live in the inner city, so most stuff I can get easily. I do hate clothes shopping with a vengeance. I get my most of my t-shirts, sweat/yoga pants and undies online, unfortunately for regular pants/jeans and bras I have to go to shops to try them on. This I try to limit to three of four trips a year. My local proper craft store is about a 20 bike ride away, the cheap craft store is a 5 minute walk and the proper art supply store is less than a minute on foot.

My sister loves clothes shopping, she can go from one shop to another. Luckily she has learned that I hate it. On Wednesday she witnessed how I shop for clothes. I needed a new summer cardigan, we walked past the store that sells nice men's cardigans (I have long arms). In this particular store there were two floors with men's clothes. I quickly walked around the first floor, which didn't have any cardigans, on the second floor there were several. A bunch of them were white, which isn't practical for me and others were made of a scratchy type of fabric. That left one cardigan, which looked nice, was made of a nice light fabric and was on sale for €20. I tried it on and it fitted nicely. We exited the store in less than 15 minutes and most of that time we spend waiting in line to pay.

What I hate most is that when shopping my sister is even if she has though about what she needs and what shops she wants/needs to visit she doesn't think about what the most effective route is between the shops. I don't mind going shopping with her a couple of times a year, but not much more. It's also the reason I usually plan our itinerary when we go on vacation.

Clothes shopping is a nightmare for me. I have dropped 85 pounds, because I needed to, in the last year and a half. Size 20 to 8. I have altered my clothes as I lost along the way until it became impossible with out totally re-making. Jeans especially. Then I hit the thrift stores. I refuse to buy new clothes until my body settles into the size it is going to be. I think I am very close as weight loss has slowed to a pound or two a month. I am no longer trying to diet I just need to keep on the foods I eat for health reasons. I am doing great and usually energy to spare. Just the last couple of weeks have been bad with hubby being sick. :'(

My best friend here gave me 5 pair of jeans that no longer fit her so I am set and really hoping I stop the loss. I have lots of T shirts and other essentials. I will get by for clothes for a long time. I am so tired of altering clothes. Never liked to sew clothes. I like to sew things like curtains pillow covers. Easy stuff. I would also need to try things on as other then the jeans I am clueless to my sizes. I look great in clothes but with out them I look like a Sharpei dog. Hahaha Oh well I am old no matter with white hair.

I also went looking for a 3/4 sleeve sweater. I need it while hubby is getting chemo. It is air conditioned in there and I get chilled sitting there waiting while they juice him. I did find one at walmart and like you tried it on it fit it was in black and I was out of there. White is not good for me either. I would have liked purple but the choice was black or white and nothing in between. Also like you time spent waiting in line way more then choosing item.

I dread the day I really need to do the whole wardrobe. For now I love thrift stores. $2.00 jeans are great. I have 4 pair of 12's sitting here to go to a new home.

I will look into that. It is a Nook I will be passing onto Mom. But I have d/l kindle on it and would do so again. Honestly I am not even sure my Mom reads books now. I am also going to send her an old laptop to play games on. Maybe the tablet would be good enough for that too. Just give her some thing to do.

Suggestion for those jeans. Donate them to the thrift store.
Congrats on the weight loss.

Yep I will take them back. That is the new home they are waiting for. I was in town yesterday but had the dog and cat with me to the vet and it was 100 degrees. I did not need another stop. Next week is soon enough.

I did that when I gained 30 much needed pounds. I am up to a size 12. I am tall.
Thank you for not leaving the animals in the car.

You're welcome.

The Kindle my friend sent to me does hold an SD card. I think she said it is 128GB.
Is that the Kindle Fire unit you were mentioning?

The original Kindle was a loss leader to prime the pump, and create a market for the eBooks Amazon wanted to sell. Once the market was established, Kindle apps began appearing for other devices. Amazon simply wants to sell you the books, so it's fine by them if you don't use an actual Kindle to display them.

The Kindle Fire has the same underlying purpose, but the content is video and audio. (Amazon has subsidiaries producing exclusive content in both areas only available through Amazon.) Vidoe files tend to be large, so a large external card to hold stuff stored locally makes sense.

I have a 32GB card in my tablet, but that's a limit imposed by the platform. 32GB is the maximum size it supports. (That's not a problem, as the content I store locally is unlikely to ever hit that limit.)

Quote:
The Nook is 16 GB and I do plan to send it on to Mom. NO I am not positive how to clear it. I was thinking to look up taking it back to factory settings. Then setting it back up in her name and address. Get her an email address then ship it off and let my brother and sister help her go as far as she wants with it. It is all in my mind to do but I have not acted on it yet. I do not have anything on it I would mind loosing.
Restoring to factory default settings is what I'd do in that case. It would clear the personal data, and be a blank slate your mother could set up as she wished.

Quote:
Well I did d/l Calabre on my Nook but never got to play with it much. Now it is going away so I will see about loading it on the new RCA for my books. I also found the FB-reader for windows for that tablet. So anxious for winter to arrive so I have more time to play with my toys.
Er, Calibre doesn't run on the Nook. It runs on a desktop host, and communicates with the tablet, to do things like put books on it.

The Nook uses a version of Android as the underlying OS, but I don't believe anyone has built Calibre to run on Android. (That would be a challenge, for technical reasons I won't bore you with.)

You might actually be able to install and run Calibre on the RCA tablet, but I'd need to know more about the device to be certain. The bigger question is whether Calibre running on a PC could communicate with the RCA tablet and put books on it. That's a question to ask on the Calibre forum.

Quote:
I did have some PDF on my 7" Kindle but found I did not need them. An office program would be good and I seriously considered open office for the RCA. I need to chart hubbies days of foods and how he is doing. Then I would not have to print it all out for the dietitian. She can just read it off the tablet.
I have LibreOffice here. It's a fork of the original Open Office code. Open Office began as Star Office from a German vendor. Sun Microsystems bought it and made it open source. Sun ran into hard times and was acquired by Oracle. A variety of folks didn't trust Oracle's long term intentions for Open Office, forked the code, and called the result LibreOffice. I have an older (2007) version of MS Office here, but normally use LibreOffice if I need that functionality. It reads and writes MS Office files. (The only part of MS Office I actually use is Publisher for the odd DTP project.) LibreOffice and Open Office are also cross platform. I dual boot Windows and Ubuntu Linux, and have LibreOffice up under both.

There are a number of PDF viewers. The one I use under Windows is an open source product called SumatraPDF. Aside from PDFs, is also displays ePub, Mobi, DjVu, CHM, and CBR/CBZ files, so it's a possible alternate as an eBook viewer.

That is exactly what you can do, and what it's intended for.

You'll need to check in the Calibre forum about connecting to your RCA tablet. Calibre needs to know how to talk to a device, and uses drivers to provide the ability. The question is whether a driver exists.

Calibre Companion is for Android not your desktop. You can transfer books from Calibre to your tablet using Calibre Companion via Wi-Fi. No USB cables needed.

Which is splendid if your tablet is running Android.

Shades67's target device appears to be an x86 based machine running Win10, and Calibre Companion won't run on it.

Going to answer all in one here, I hope.

I never did get Calibre to work on the Nook and now I know why. I figured it was me just being dumb. I did get it down loaded though. BUT some how by D/L Calibre I was able to listen to an audio book I had d/l to the nook and book mark it where before I could not. So I was happy and left well enough alone. Before I was listening to the audio books with a music player and had to write down the numbers to go back to each time I has to stop the book and come back. It was not a satisfactory way to listen to the audio books.

I down loaded Calibre to my laptop and figured how to get one book to it and I was able to read the book in the Calibre viewer. I only checked a page or two and it worked so that is good. As I understand I can send the books to my device of choice and use that as my reader. Mostly use my laptop version as the catalog to find books on. Like the mother ship of my books. LOL

The win 10 tablet is an RCA Cambio. Win 10. As I understand it is it a tablet running windows not apps. This is an amazon listing for the info on it. I bought mine through ebay for $90.00. I planned to give it to my Mom but decided to keep it because I love the ports on it. Camera is icky but I have a camera. https://www.amazon.com/RCA-Windows-D...RAM+%2B+OFFICE

There is an office program on the RCA but it is only a trial so I will just do the Open office or Libre Office as you suggested. I just need a spread sheet to work with. I am no longer doing the city books or anything fancy like I used to do. HA I used to be smart.

My biggest question and I have been looking for the answer is. Will I need to load each book from Amazon one book at a time to my computer then to Calibre? Am I missing a way to batch load. I have not found the answer to that. I am headed to bed. My brain just turned to mud.

Thank you all so much.

I thought it was a Kindle Fire 8?
It's the one with the SD Slot. It runs a hybrid of Android.

Shades if you are referring to a Kindle Fire we have a forum for those questions.

As for a Windows 10 tablet you are limited to what apps it can run due to the windows store being limited in itself for quality. I'd stick with the Kindle Fire for reading. PDFs would work better on the Win 10 tablet though.
