The Cold Cold Ground (Detective Sean Duffy #1) by Adrian McKinty is $0.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Northern Ireland, Spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer, and a young woman’s suicide: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force. Add to this the fact that, as a Catholic policeman, it doesn’t matter which side he’s on, because nobody trusts him, and Sergeant Duffy really is in a no-win situation.

Fast-paced, evocative, and brutal, The Cold Cold Ground is a brilliant depiction of Belfast at the height of the Troubles—and of a cop treading a thin, thin line.
FYI, I read this last year and recommend it. The portrait of Northern Ireland during the Troubles was particularly interesting.

The fact that one is an FBI agent and one an assassin must come from elsewhere in the book.
I'd see that more as a case of missing punctuation, rather than grammar.

Wordy, maybe. But it otherwise reads okay to me.

Two more titles in the Inspector Adam Dalgliesh series by PD James have dropped to £0.98 at Kindle UK.

Shroud for a Nightingale, #4: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002RI9YAK

Death of an Expert Witness, #6: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002RI90CC

In addition, most or all of the James/Dalgliesh titles in these two previous posts from early January are still on sale. I'm wondering if this might be a monthly sale type thing, in which case these all might be back up to "normal" price really soon. OTOH, the two I've just posted seem to be pretty recent, and I don't think I would have missed them when posting the others in early January. So who knows - YMMV!

Also, as I mentioned in another post, there was an omnibus of the first six titles in the series floating around on sale a while ago, so check carefully before you buy.

A Swollen Red Sun by Matthew McBride is $2.99

https://smile.amazon.com/Swollen-Red...t%2C166&sr=1-1

Quote:
In Gasconade County, Missouri—once called the meth capital of the world—Deputy Sheriff Dale Banks discovers $52,000 hidden in the broken-down trailer that Jerry Dean Skaggs uses for cooking crystal. And he takes it. Banks knows what he did was wrong, but he did it for all the right reasons. At least, he thinks so. But for every wrong, there is a consequence.

Jerry Dean can’t afford to lose that $52,000—he owes it to his partners and to a crooked cop. He also can’t afford to disappoint the crazed and fearsome Reverend Butch Pogue, who is expecting Jerry Dean to deliver the chemicals the reverend needs for his next batch of meth. To avoid the holy man’s wrath, Jerry Dean sets in motion a series of events that will threaten Banks’s family, his life, and everything he thinks he knows about the world.

One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night by Christopher Brookmyre is $1.99. Seems more comedy but it's listed as mystery.

Quote:
Gavin Hutchison has a plan to create a unique “floating holiday experience” on a converted North Sea oil rig. It’ll be a haven for tourists who want a vacation without the hassle of actually going anywhere. And what better way to test out his venture than to host a fifteen-year high school reunion, the biggest social event of his life? Believe it or not, the plan goes all wrong.

Not only does no one remember Gavin, but his wife has discovered his philandering ways and plans to ditch him with a very public announcement in front of his assembled guests. That includes the uninvited ones, like a band of party-crashing mercenaries who are about to bring out the very worst in these very old friends.

The Burning Chambers by Kate Mosse is $2.99

https://smile.amazon.com/Burning-Cha...t%2C150&sr=1-2

Quote:
Power and Prejudice: France, 1562. War sparks between the Catholics and Huguenots, dividing neighbors, friends, and family—meanwhile, nineteen-year-old Minou Joubert receives an anonymous letter at her father’s bookshop. Sealed with a distinctive family crest, it contains just five words: She knows that you live.

Love and Betrayal: Before Minou can decipher the mysterious message, she meets a young Huguenot convert, Piet Reydon. Piet has a dangerous task of his own, and he will need Minou’s help if he is to stay alive. Soon, they find themselves on opposing sides, as forces beyond their control threaten to tear them apart.

Honor and Treachery: As the religious divide deepens, Minou and Piet find themselves trapped in Toulouse, facing new dangers as tensions ignite across the city—and a feud that will burn across generations begins to blaze. . .

I've not read any books by this author, but I noticed on the way to other things that The Last Straw, which is the first in the DCI Warren Jones series by Paul Gitsham, is free right now at US retailers. So, free is free, and I thought I'd post it.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IPKD2WK/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...jones-book-1-1
BN: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the...=9781472094698

Spoiler:
Quote:
When Professor Alan Tunbridge is discovered in his office with his throat slashed, the suspects start queuing up. The brilliant but unpleasant microbiologist had a genius for making enemies. For Warren Jones, newly appointed Detective Chief Inspector to the Middlesbury force, a high-profile murder is the ideal opportunity. He's determined to run a thorough and professional investigation but political pressure to resolve the case quickly and tensions in the office and at home make life anything but easy.

Everything seems to point to one vengeful man but the financial potential of the professor's pioneering research takes the inquiry in an intriguing and, for Jones and his team, dangerous direction.

The Tomb in Turkey is the 16th in the Fethering series by Simon Brett. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US. It has not dropped, at least as of now, at Kobo US.

Brett's books rarely go on sale in the US, so grab it if you want it. I've read and enjoyed many of Brett's books in almost all of his series, so I'm happy to see this one drop in price.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00SHUMN7S

Spoiler:
Quote:
Carole and Jude’s Turkish holiday takes a murderous turn in the new Fethering mystery

Carole Seddon has never enjoyed holidays much. Nevertheless, she has allowed herself to be persuaded by her friend Jude to accept a fortnight’s free accommodation at a luxurious Turkish villa owned by Jude’s property developer friend Barney Willingdon.

But from the outset the holiday is marred by a series of menacing incidents: threatening messages daubed on the villa walls; and their host being accosted by a knife-wielding man at a local restaurant. As Carole and Jude launch into what they do best - investigating - it becomes clear that Barney Willingdon has made plenty of enemies, with his ruthless business deals and complicated love life.

Matters come to a head when Carole’s sightseeing trip to nearby Pinara is curtailed by the discovery of a body in one of the ancient Lycian tombs. And what really did happen to Barney’s first wife, Zoe?
