Listening to the receding thunderstorm. I love thunderstorms, it's a shame that living in the inner city means that it's hard to see the lightning properly.

Wishing that there was a game similar to Microsoft's Pandora's Box or that it would work on Windows 7.

The Microsoft page with the needed patch file no longer exists, but Google found a copy on CNET. I've attached a zip file of it. (I don't have/play Pandora's box, and can't state from experience whether this will work.) ______ Dennis |

It took a while but I did find the cd-rom of the game. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get it all to work. Reading various posts suggests it's hit or miss if the game will work properly. I'm now looking for a store to buy a pack of US letter size paper from. So far I have found stores that will only sell you a full box (5 packs of 500 sheets) or want more for shipping than a pack of paper costs. |

Resting with a small glass of Rioja (okay, not so small) after returning from a weekend in London. Highlights were the Saatchi Gallery and the Tate Modern, which we got to via the (non-wobbly) Millennium Bridge. A last minute impulse visit which was just what the Doctor ordered.

Visited Covent Garden yesterday, followed by a meal and a show (The Commitments). This morning we went to Camden Market for the first time ever - quite an experience. I'm having a not so small glass of Pinot Grigio. |

Just got back from a trip to the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge (about 50 miles south of Seattle). Went with my son and grandson. Nice warm sunny day. Still on crutches, so I stayed behind most of the time so as not to slow down the rest of my family.

Catching ... my ... breath.
Just managed to rid the house of our first bat. We've been here almost 25 years, and I'm not sure how he got in. His initial flightpath seemed to come from the basement, which used to be "vented" to the outdoors, but I suppose I might have left a gap when I tried to seal it up. I tried to "herd" him out the front door, but he wasn't going for it and, eventually, I began to worry about what else I might be letting inside. So, I changed tactics. It called for some rapid broom work, and I think I may have twisted my back, but I managed to swat him, scoop him up in a dustpan, and deposit him in the front yard. I like bats and I hope I didn't hurt him too badly, but I had other priorities just then. (Around here, bats are serious carriers of rabies.) |

Installing Windows 10 on an old Compaq laptop (CQ61-420US) running Win 7 Home.
My SO's friend Naomi decided she needed a new laptop, because hers "died the death", as reported by my SO. It was passed to me for examination, and it wasn't dead, merely resting. Naomi had managed to totally drain the battery, and that model won't power on, even when plugged into an outlet, without at least some battery. Plugged in and left overnight, it booted normally the next morning. But Naomi decided she still wanted a new laptop, so I assisted her in the purchase. It's a refurb ASUS unit with Win 8.1, and Naomi was pleased at a price a third of what she expected to pay. (I did some prep work on it, but there is more to do. She hates the Metro interface. This is a job for Classic Shell...) The Compaq came to live with me, and will be a travel machine for trips we take together. First step was to uninstall a bunch of unneeded stuff. Second step was an A/V/malware scan. Third step was defragging the HD. Fourth step was installing things that are part of my standard kit, to make life easier when I have to lay hands on it. Fifth step was to add RAM. It came with 3GB, and can take up to 4GB, so a 2GB RAM stick replaced a 1GB stick. Last step, happening now, is an upgrade to Win10. I downloaded the media and created an installer on a flash drive, and am installing from that rather than doing an online upgrade. My SO already upgraded her Win7 Home laptop, and it was relatively painless. The big issue was figuring out where things were in Win10 because locations changed from Win7. Her main issue is that installing Win10 removes the Microsoft Games collection that comes with Win7. "Hey! Where's Freecell?" Gone... (MS's FAQ states this will occur, but she didn't read it.) MS wants you to download them from the Microsoft Web Store instead, and they are ad-supported and require purchase to remove the ads. Fortunately, someone patched the Win7/8.1 games to remove the run time OS version check, and packaged the complete set with an installer to let you install which you want. Freecell is back, and the SO is happy. Naomi's new machine gets them next. There are an assortment of things I plan to say "No, thank you" to in the install process, mostly concerned with what it phones home about. (I am nowhere near as paranoid as a lot of the commentary I've seen regarding this, but do prefer to pick and choose. That's wont happen for a bit yet - it's still copying files and configuring. Fun, for suitable vales of the term. ![]() ______ Dennis |

My daughter is packing up to return to school tomorrow. Initially, I was planning to help. But, it appears that the best way for me to help is to stay out of the way.

I'm expecting at least one package today and maybe a second. Since it's Monday that means put up the laminated sign for the delivery person(s) telling them that although the store downstairs is closed there is someone home to receive the package.
It also means until delivery I have to stay at home and somewhere where I can hear the doorbell. I'll also be going downstairs a lot to tell customers that yes, the store's really closed and no, I won't help them even if I've opened the door for them (unless it's a real emergency). |
