The Libra is also capacitive.

Yes, I'm aware, but that doesn't mean there hasn't been an improvement in the technology since then (the PW3 came out in June of 2015). The devices I own are all at least 4 years old and back then having a capacitive layer definitely had a negative impact on sharpness.

I can't see how capacitive, no matter how well done, isn't slightly dimmer than IR as an extra layer with semi-transparent conductive material is needed. IR doesn't add layers. I don't want to have to use the lighting to compensate. Certainly the Original Kobo Aura H2O is a brighter white than my Kindle PW3 or my friend's PW4 or any ereader I've seen.
I think capacitive is a backward step on eink simply done as a cost reduction and a way to have a less recessed screen. It's actually a very old technology and the only reason smartphones used resistive before the iPhone was to allow high resolution stylus annotation, handwriting and poky GUIs derived from desktop (PDA WinCE). There isn't much difference in resolution between IR and capacitive, they are both very low resolution, though fine for fingers. The Wacom type tablet is rather different and it can be behind a screen, but only works with a special stylus energized by the tablet, hence it can have buttons and pressure.

Capacitive, properly done, even in 1980s didn't affect sharpness. Any difference between PW3 and PW4 can't really be to do with real advances in capacitive technology. It's really really old and can even use glass with zero effect on sharpness even 30 years ago.

Heheh.

I already started to imagine blue and green-hued Kobo owners and had an awful thought I had somehow been secretly teleported to another planet...

That’s the point of the color hue, the blue light is thought to stimulate your brain keeping you awake while the red light doesn’t do this.

I know, but it rather defeats the purpose of reading if the act of reading is making one go dizzy ahah

I may be wrong, but when I read 30 minutes on Kobo Libra and 30 minutes on another device that has a sharper font on the screen, I was not so tired.
Hmm, you might have a good point there.
I'm actually quite glad to finally find someone who gets tired eyes when reading on the Libra in the dark as well.

I've returned it and I'm not sure if the screen will ever be as 'calm' as that of my Kindles. Right now I'm quite happy with my Oasis 3, despite still thinking the Libra is a nicer device to look at.

After some intensive reading sessions I still like reading on my Libra, but I must admit, that the light distribution and the comfort light (the font seems to slightly disappear with comfort light on when reading in the dark) all together make reading in the dark less enjoyable than reading on my Oasis.

Maybe this is similar to what SusanReads and Michael Jancic experienced. Or I'm just too sensible ...

Why is my wife nodding?

I honestly gave up on the comfort light.

It should be subtle, instead is more like the kobo is saying "hey, have you noticed you are using my amazing orange light? Never mind that boring book and take a nap! "

And when I'm reading, i don't want the device I'm reading on to give me sleepiness.

The regular light being a bit darker towards the buttons side doesn't bother as it "dissipates" from attention once you are reading.

Also i don't know if they may correct this in the future but all the fonts seem a bit gray.

When i used the Glo, the text was really black and made a nice contrast (even though very rough as hd was not a thing back then).

Sorry for the rant.

By the way, the libra is giving me 35h of reading time over 2 weeks on a charge. Not great, but i think it's the light killing the battery a bit too fast

The Libra I returned went down 5% per 4 hours, so I thought that was great for an e-reader battery. But 80 hours is a lot more than your 35...

Which is exactly what you can do with the device. Personally, I have tended to set the comfort-light to a little off-white and leave it that way. I do try the automatic settings with each new device to see how they have changed, but, stop it after a few weeks.

Kobo's claim is "weeks of battery life" of battery life. At one time, they claimed 1 month for some devices, and 2 months others. That was based on 30 minutes of reading per day. Which works out to either 15 hours or 30 hours. Amazon claims 6 weeks for the Paperwhite and Oasis with the same usage. That suggests that 35 hours is pretty good.
