Namur, Belgium
An odd Namurois custom is the annual Combat de l'Échasse d'Or (Fight for the Golden Stilt), held on the third Sunday in September. Two teams, the Mélans and the Avresses, dress in medieval clothes while standing on stilts and do battle in one of the town's principal squares. ![]() The belfry of Namur. |

Dover, NJ
Home of The Kubert School. Located in a building that was originally Dover's high school, the Kubert School was and still is the only accredited school devoted entirely to cartooning. I lived in nearby Morristown when it was opened by professional cartoonist Joe Kubert. It's not unusual to see students with sketch pads spreading out on the grounds and in nearby neighborhoods when the weather is good. There's an art supply store in the basement with an entrance through a side door that's open to the public. Last edited by cromag; 03-22-2016 at 11:32 PM. |

Reading, United Kingdom
Jane Austen attended Reading Ladies Boarding School, based in the Abbey Gateway, in 1784–86. Mary Russell Mitford lived in Reading for a number of years and then spent the rest of her life just outside the town at Three Mile Cross and Swallowfield. The fictional Belford Regis of her eponymous novel, first published in 1835, is largely based on Reading. Described with topographical accuracy, it is still possible to follow the steps of the novel's characters in present-day Reading. Reading also appears in the works of Thomas Hardy where it is called 'Aldbrickham'. It features most heavily in his final novel, Jude the Obscure, as the temporary home of Jude Fawley and Sue Bridehead. ![]() The Abbey Gateway, where Jane Austen went to school |

Great Barrington, MA
Great Barrington is a scenic town in the Berkshires. Aside from the permanent residents, Great Barrington is the site of many "summer homes" and also skiing in the winter. It's also home to antique shops, trendy little shops, etc., etc. Traffic through town is almost always heavy -- at least it has been every time I've tried to drive through. From Wikipedia: Quote:

Aksaray, Turkey
Aksaray region was an important stopover along the Silk Road that crossed through Anatolia for centuries and the city of Aksaray has a long history. Ihlara Valley and the other tourist attractions of Cappadocia are close, but as yet, Aksaray has not been very successful in attracting visitors to the city itself. A new attraction in Aksaray city is Hünkarland, a large theme park with artificial waterfalls and which has immediately become a popular venue for Aksaray wedding parties. ![]() Monumental entrance of the Sultan Han, Aksaray, Turkey. |

Ybor City, Florida
Ybor City is a historic neighborhood in Tampa, Florida located just northeast of downtown. It was founded in the 1880s by cigar manufacturers and was populated by thousands of immigrants, mainly from Cuba, Spain and Italy. For the next 50 years, workers in Ybor City's cigar factories rolled millions of cigars annually. The neighborhood has been designated as a National Historic Landmark District, and several structures in the area are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, 7th Avenue, the main commercial thoroughfare in Ybor City, was recognized as one of the “10 Great Streets in America” by the American Planning Association. ![]() |
