New iPad release sees tens of thousands of old iPads listed on eBay
I was wondering what people do with their old devices when they buy a new one. For me it's either keep them around or pass them to someone else. Selling them seems like too much trouble, but it looks like 16000 people think differently.

My wife is getting my iPad 2. In fact I need to go ahead & reset & restore for her. I'm giving my dad her iPad 1. They both still work perfectly.

How many millions of brand-new iPads were sold last year? I reckon there are far, far more than 16,000 who would sell/trade-in their current iPad but I do believe majority of older iPads would be passed around to family members or delegated to other use.

I'm guessing that the 16,000 were people who wanted to spend the money from the old model on the new. Otherwise they would have waited until they had the new ones before selling the old.

You can trade in an old iPad for a new one at Apple - they will give you a gift card worth $200 for a 16GB wifi model. Amazon will do better; they will give you a card worth up to $300 (although $280 seems to be standard for devices with light wear).

In any event, those are pretty good trade in values for devices that sold for $500 one year ago.

The current iteration of iPad is the only one that has tempted me, purely because of the retina display and its ability to render PDFs better than current eInk devices. Whether the £400 price tag is worth it for a 16gig model, I have to consider further...

Man, this is tough. My heart tells me to upgrade, but my head tells me that my ipad 1 is perfectly serviceable and apparently will be for at least another year- which is great from the point of view of justifying the initial investment , but sucks from the point of view of rationalizing a decision to upgrade- and explaining it to the wife .
The only out I see here is that the wife wants an iPad . Maybe I could buy one and tell her, " Honey, I love you so much that I sacrificed to buy this new iPad so you can get this one. "

What do you guys think? Think it will work?

I think that will only work if you never let her look at your new screen (not to mention the speed improvemnent which happened in the move from 1 to 2)

The new screen really is amazing - the descriptions of "glowing paper" are very apt, IMO.

One of the drawbacks of setting high expectations is the inevitable letdown. Apple achieved the remarkable technical feat of achieving the Retina display ( the most requested feature) without a significant degradation of battery capacity or an increase in price. The reaction of pundits?
" This is just an incremental upgrade. Where's the anti grav jet pack capability?"

Oh well, maybe in Version 4.....

Apparently, one drawback of the retina display is apps that have not been upgraded look bad. This will be remedied eventually but early adopters may be disappointed.

Why don't people who hate on apple for "overpriced crap" give them some credit for upping their specs while maintaining competitive pricing with the big names like Samsung and Motorola? After all, when you're the leader, you don't have to undercut the competition on price. Recall when the first iPad came out, people speculated it would cost $800-$1000. Turned out it started at $500, but it was overpriced crap anyway.

Talking Nice reality distortion field you have.

Excuse me but most Android Tablets have 1280x800 resolution. And ASUS is already working on a 1920x1200 full HD tablet.

Besides: since when is buying a ready made product “innovation”? After all Apple just buys the screens off Samsung. In my book that makes Samsung the innovator and Apple a mere customer.

But I guess for you that is different. Sorry for making ripples in your reality distortion field. It soon goes away.

You think Samsung designed & engineered them? They just manufacturer them.

It will be interesting to see what asus comes out with & then some comparison tests.

No. Most apps still look great. I haven't noticed a difference.

It'll always be overpriced crap to the apple haters. Yet they just spent the same of not more or had to get a 2 yr contract.
