I finished Ghost Story this morning. This turned out to be my least favorite book. Maybe if I hadn't listened to it after having major surgery, I'd be more thrilled with it. It had some great elements and some good action, but it was overall depressing. Maybe it was the return of Corpsetaker. I mean, if you can't eliminate the bad guys, what hope is there for Chicago? They just keep coming back.

A presentation/talk about the personal evolution one makes as a storyteller and author, both before and after breaking into the business with a best seller. How one copes with expectations from a mass audience and their fanship for one specific property, while still producing new material that is outside of the topics, genre or style from previous works. Balancing audience expectation with the desire to create works that are fresh and exciting for you as the storyteller. How one emotionally "breaks up" with one series and its characters in order to court a new idea.

There are quite a few folks who consider Ghost Story to be their least favorite novel of The Dresden Files. It kinda' shares that distinction with Storm Front, Fool Moon and Grave Peril. Personally, being of the optimistic persuasion, I don't have a least favorite.

This is why I sometimes hate to post reviews. What I like, someone else doesn't. What someone else likes, maybe I won't be as thrilled. It's an issue especially if someone else hasn't even read it yet - takes some of the joy from reading. I have a lot of GOOD things to say about Ghost Story, so take heart.

I'm over half-way through it thus far, but it has proved to be an interference with my current reading of J.K. Rowling's new Cormoran Strike mystery, The Silkworm.

I actually quite enjoyed it. It was a totally different book after Changes, but it is fitting. It is setting up the next books perfectly fine and closure on some past storylines.
It also gives a lot more information about how ghosts work in the Dresdenverse. The return of Corpsetaker did not bother or surprised me. We already knew dat Kemmler was killed a couple of times and if one of his students learned that trick, it had to be Corpsetaker.

I must admit I enjoyed more the second time I read it. I don't have a least favorite book, but there are some I like less.
