Listening to firecrackers going off. Sound like the DMZ outside, and it's been going on all day. Probably a good fireworks display tonight, but it's only endlessly long strings of firecrackers during the day.
Happy Lunar New Year one and all! Stitchawl |

At the National Gallery in London having lunch.
After that we're going to Westminster, St. Paul's, the Tower and finally the Air Link. |

Unclenching - after slip sliding home from work - they waited too long to plow the roads - so now the ice is too hard - and we have to wait for it to melt

My wife, who's minding the store back in Chesapeake, hasn't been out of the house since Monday. As she works as a driver assistant on a school bus, she hasn't been at work all week. The schools are closed, but it's no holiday for her, as the ice on the streets has her house-bound. |

Thinking about life in the jungle... and what images that evokes. Here's some reality.
Chiang Mai is the last stop on the rail line heading north towards Burma. Anywhere where there are no buildings, there is 'jungle foliage.' Snakes, bugs, birds, etc. There are many small bamboo huts...between large modern condominium buildings. Street markets and vendors walking the streets selling from baskets slung between poles over their shoulders, but also a few modern shopping malls. Of course, beyond the mall parking lots the jungle starts again. Only a handful of 'tall' buildings here, the tallest being 18 floors. I live on the 15th of 16 floors, and I shot this from the window with my cell phone camera last night just as the sun was going down behind the mountains... ![]() Stitchawl |

Great picture Stitch!
I'm at home doing nothing much after three days of travelling. London was great, but the visit was very short. On Thursday after arriving we first got tickets for Cats that night. Then to the hotel to drop off our bag. My sister wanted to look for a new scarf and some make up in London so we spend most of the afternoon going in and out of shops. When she veered towards the Primark I stopped her and demanded we go to the hotel to rest for a bit before going to the theatre (I've been to the Primark on Oxford Street once and it's not an experience I wanted to repeat). Cats was great. We didn't have the best seats, but that is chance if you buy day tickets. But luckily most of the action was on the part of the stage I could see (my sister had a slightly better view). I saw Cats 15 years ago and since then they've made some changes. On Thursday we had a full program. My sister wanted to see some of the London landmarks. First we went to the National Gallery, where we also had lunch. Then we were off to Westminster, my sister was a bit underwhelmed by the Big Ben. Back on the Tube and to St. Paul's. We had planned on going inside but they wanted £17, we wouldn't have minded paying but £17 was too steep so we walked around it back to the Underground. By the time we got to the Tower we were tired and had a drink at a nearby pub. We walked around the Tower and viewed Tower Bridge. We took the DLR to the Emirates Air Line to the O2 (great trip!) where we had dinner at Las Iguanas and took the Air Line back and went to the hotel. I felt like I spend half of the day on public transport! Today and tomorrow I plan to take it easy (and give my blister a chance to heal ![]() |

Wondering what is up with all the fire alarms. Yesterday as I was getting ready for bed, the fire alarms began blaring in the Hospitality House, causing all the residents to walk down to the first floor (my room is on the seventh). I later discovered that it was the third time that day that fire alarms had sounded there. Today the fire alarms sounded in the hospital. Worse still, they immediately stopped serving lunch in the cafeteria and I hadn't eaten yet. The alarm continued for the better part of forever. I was told that the Fire Department had the only key for silencing the alarms. Well, the alarms were finally shut off and I got some lunch, but I still have no idea why any of them sounded. A new patient looking for a place to smoke, perhaps?
