They backtracked a bit on the 100% bag check rule. At the regular cash registers we have to ask everyone to show their bags/backpacks/shopping trolleys, but at the self check-out we only have to check the people who get selected by the system/us for a purchase check.
At the regular cash register we caught one person yesterday, who threw something at the cashier before team leaders and management were able to make their way to her register. Security from the shopping center and police were called in and he was arrested and the store gave him a one year store ban (why not a lifetime ban?). I didn't have any customers who refused, some were not too happy about it, but most people didn't mind. Why no tracking? Those systems are really expensive. I know that when you buy some products (they also have signs on the shelves) you are more likely to be picked out for a check at self check-out. Also people who use the hand scanner are more likely to be picked out, if you only have one or two purchases, when you delete something from your list at the register, when you manually enter a barcode number (when the barcode itself does not scan) or when it takes you a long time to finish with your purchase. On Monday we got a list of most stolen items, which mostly consists of meat, alcohol, cheese, toiletries and, of course, the shopping bags. Last week I had someone who was buying ginger buy when weighing it put it in as carrots. Carrots are less than €1 a kilo, but ginger is over €4 a kilo. So I now take extra care to check any weighed fruit and vegetables. Despite all of this I am enjoying the work and the schedule. Tomorrow I have a talk with my team leader, not so much a review of my functioning, but more to be told some things I haven't been told yet and see if I have any questions or concerns. |

Ha! Very topical. I'm just listening to this directly on BBC streaming.

Locally, we've had quite a few stores with issues due to the catch and release policies for minor crimes such as shoplifting. Even when the shoplifter gets violent, they are often back on the street before the store staff has finished filling out the police reports. Recently, there has been a lot of whining that such and such a store has closed when it became unsustainable to continue in that location.

Today I witnessed something that seems to sum up the world today.
Caught a bus to go to my podiatrist. Sitting opposite was young woman with a newborn in a baby buggy… we exchanged smiles. After a while she stood to get off, and started to manoeuvrer the buggy towards the front door. The driver had the door open almost before he stopped, six or seven people got on the bus and pushed the young woman and baby buggy aside - the bus was no where near full. They were aged between maybe 12 and 72, male and female. The bus started to move, the young woman moved towards the door again, and I yelled out "Oi, someone wants to get off you *&^%$ idjit." When one gets off a bus in Sydney its customary to say, or call out from the middle door, "Thanks driver!" Goes without saying that driver got no thanks from the young woman or me, but he did get one from the obese guy who was one of those who pushed the young woman and baby aside. |

That stuff drives me ape-shit.
For boarding I will normally queue up glued to the side of the vehicle and leaving the exit free. Others will stand directly in front of the exit. After a pause of a second to make sure that no one else is exiting I will try to board. That's usually when I get run over by somebody who overslept their stop "Oi!" is one of my favorite expressions. |

Courtesy has gone since COVID IMO.It costs nothing and makes everyday life so much more pleasant. It's got to the stage where I no longer enjoy going out.
