Working on my Dublin 2012 holiday album whilst waiting for dinner. As usual we're going to make dinner on the raclette set, mostly stuffing ourselves with french bread whilst waiting for the meat and vegetables to cook

Turkey is in the oven (2 hours of agonizing sniffing with rumbling tummies) -- now off to read David Sedaris' Elfland Diaries whilst sampling one of my new micro-brews. It don't get much better than this ....

I'm not entirely certain if it was wet cat in my face or the bag of kittie munchies crinkling under my pillow that woke me just now. Why is there a bag of kitty munchies under my pillow? Strider?

Playing with my new Kindle Fire HDX. Nothing really wrong with my old Kindle Fire, except that the battery life is getting shorter, and it has the tendency to switch off when the battery gets to 15%. And anyway, the new one was on offer for £100 off list, and doubles my storage capacity, so what the hell.

My main bugbear with the HDX is that I can't get Moon+ Reader Pro to work. Had to side load it, as I did with my original Fire, and it has installed okay, but when I try to open a book, I just get a blank screen, and it won't go any further. Having to revert to the Kindle Reader app for now, but seeing how I have now bought Moon+ twice in an attempt to get it working, it's a bit irritating. Graphics are great though, and it is lighter than the older model.

What I use on my generic Android tablet is an open source product from a Russian developer called FBReaderJ. FBReader began in a C language version for Windows and Linux, and the Android version is a port to Java. Versions are available for OS/X and Blackberry 10, with older versions available for various legacy devices.

It gets the nod because it handles ePub, Mobi, FB2, and (via plugins) PDF and DjVu files. It does not handle files encumbered with DRM, but I don't get DRM laden files and don't care. Books are placed on the tablet's external SD card from Calibre, and FBReaderJ sees them and can view them. It gets the nod because I don't have to care what format a book is in. (I get ePub by preference, but that's not always an option. On the Windows/Linux side, FBReader also handles volumes in the format used by the Plucker offline HTML viewer for Palm OS. I used a PDA with Plucker for years as an eBook viewer, and accumulated about 4,000 converted Plucker volumes. It's nice to be able to read them on something other than the Palm device.)

I looked at Moon Reader+, but find FBReaderJ a better fit for what I do. Free and open source is a fringe benefit. It's actively developed and the developer is responsive to bug reports.

See http://fbreader.org/FBReaderJ. I'll be a bit surprised if it doesn't run on the Fire DX.

Thanks for this. I will have a look. What I like about Moon+ is how configurable it is, and also the side-screen swipe options to adjust brightness and font size without having to go to a config screen. But if there is a reasonable alternative, I'm not wedded to it.

What I have also found out last night with my new HDX is that it doesn't have an HDMI port like the old one, so I couldn't use it to watch an Amazon Prime movie on the TV as we had planned, and also it lost wifi connection just a few yards away from the hub, which the old one doesn't. All in all I'm getting less and less enamoured with my new HDX .

You need this adapter for the HDX http://www.amazon.com/Amazon-HDMI-Ad...r+fire+tablets - I don't know why they left it off the HDX models. Unless to sell adapters ...

Thanks for that. No doubt to fill the coffers...

EDIT: According to one review "Does not work with Kindle Fire HDX7...I have since found out HDX 7 will not do HDMI with a cable, only wireless. Very disappointed." Ouch.

Last week I got the letter that it was time to pick out new glasses. I have a sort of subscription where I pay €3 a month to the spec store and every two years I can get new glasses. It's a great deal because those €72 includes extra thin glasses, which I need and normally it would cost me over €200 to buy new glasses. You get to pick from their own brand of frames, if you want a designer frame you have to pay a bit extra. I don't think my eyesight has changed much so I'll keep my current glasses, too.
