I'm a lite member. I was able to preorder the audiobook, and receive it for _free_. However, I didn't see anywhere where we would receive a $5 credit, either.

The Marketer (academic and professional background) in me is curious about things like this. Why would Audible essentially _give_ someone $5 to take a _free_ audiobook? Sorry to break the news to some of you, but they're not doing it out of the goodness of their heart(s). My best educated guess is that they want people to try the preorder thing (duh), so get acquainted with the idea, have some experience with it, like doing it, and start doing it regularly. Result: $5 well spent by Audible. And, part of this gets a little technical, so suffice it to say that $5 to us actually costs Audible quite a bit _less than_ $5_.

Based on this sentence in @Issybird's post with the quote of the details of the offer, I doubt that the free pre-order is going to activate the $5 credit. Still worth trying, since free is free , but I suspect this means it won't work:

Pre-order must not be cancelled prior to September 15 and must have a value of at least $5.

I'm sorry; I don't have a link. The home page defaults to the stupid promo for the member benefit for Audible Originals.

The offer is now shown on the home page; you need to scroll down around halfway. There's no additional information, and I'm not seeing the fine print that was in the e-mail about the pre-order needing to cost at least $5. So I suppose a case could be made for a free pre-order generating the coupon, if one wants to try that route.

I’ve combed all the pre-orders, looking for something decent in the $5-8 range, and came up fairly empty. Might take a flyer on one of the Fletch novel pre-orders for $8.31. I know there are a couple $1-3 items in my wishlist, so trying to decide if they and something like Fletch Too are worth $8.

It sounds like the $5 coupon only has about a 30 day lifespan too. So one has to want to buy a second book (without using a "credit") within 30 days. No thanks.

It's really about 60 days. You have until October 18 to claim the discount and it's good for another 30 days after that.

I'm not saying this so people will game the system, but, based on the last time Audible made this offer, you can cancel the preorder with impunity. The fine print says only that you can't cancel before September 15.

Last time, I had preordered a book I didn't think my library would get, with a fairly long lead time. I got the coupon and used it for another book. Meanwhile, my library did indeed acquire (in advance of publication) the book I preordered, so I canceled it at Audible.

Given the current agency prices for WhisperSync, I'll have to plan this carefully. At $12.99 for most WhisperSync books recently, there's not much incentive to buying the eBook and using the coupon towards the audio book.

If you like the classics the coupon is worthwhile as most of the WhisperSync classic prices are now $7.49. At least that's my strategy.
