Pimping Christmas cards. I bought ready made ones which are blank inside so I can decorate them.
Note to self: It's no coincidence that the craft store starts to stock Christmas related items in August. Next year I need to get crafty for Christmas before December. |

I purchased a used Nook Simple Touch on eBay so I could root it. It arrived about a week ago and it smelled horrible--like cigar smoke or a man cave! I cleaned the bezel and outer shell with Endust wipes and the terrible smell remained. I did a google search finally and found out that it could be removed with isopropyl rubbing alcohol. So I pulled out my squirt bottle, squirted some rubbing alcohol on a napkin and began cleaning the bezel and shell with it. Sure enough--it got rid of some of the smell! At least, it doesn't reek of cigar as much.
I think I'll use the rubbing alcohol a few more times. Last edited by trichobezoar; 12-08-2014 at 09:36 PM. Reason: Edited for clarity. |

I'll clean it daily with rubbing alcohol for a few days--see what happens. EDIT: On a positive note, I just rooted my Kindle Touch! : ) Last edited by trichobezoar; 12-08-2014 at 11:28 PM. |

I hope we're allowed to double-post...
Early this morning I wiped my Nook ST with rubbing alcohol again and let it sit for a while. It still smells like cigar, but it's more of a musty smell now... not a man cave smell. I need to buy some pot pourri. Maybe if I put it in a big bowl of pot pourri it'll do the trick? |

Or how about those beads that draw moisture out of the air -- the packets that come in medicine bottles. Get a bunch of those packets. Leave them closed (so they don't get inside the Nook) and bury the Nook in a pile of them.
Well, I know *I've* got a stash of them that aren't good for anything else! |

I buy large bottles of these beads at chemical supply stores. A kilo costs about $5 this way. I put them into empty 'teapot size' teabags, and stash them inside my camera equipment 'dry boxes.' The ones I buy are a deep blue color when refreshed, turning pale purple when they absorb moisture. I zapp 'em in the oven, and they turn back to deep blue for another round! Stitchawl |

And thanks, Stitchy, for the info ..... they don't continue to work beyond a short while, *unless* I microwave zap them? In that case, I should just toss the pile of them I'm saving? That'll free up some bathroom drawer space!

When purchased in camera stores or electronics shops, they tend to be in fancy containers and rather expensive for what they actually are. If bought in chemical supply stores (the Yellow Pages are your friend) they are cheap as dirt, but you have to supply your own smaller 'working' containers. As I said, I use empty tea bags for small sachets, but for larger amounts pour 3-4 tablespoons full into coffee filters, fold the edges and tape them down. Works fine. Stitchawl |
