Allergy season has arrived with a vengeance. And it's vengeance is all aimed at ME.

I cleaned our bedroom Thursday. I mean I CLEANED it. Dusted everything (we have a really nice bedroom set, not that you can usually see it for the clothes on top of the dresser and chest), changed sheets, dustmopped under bed, chest, and nightstand.
Today while I was grocery shopping, Chris decided he needed his weekend hat. He thinks he left it on top of the chest of drawers. Well, it wasn't there when I cleaned it off, and it is nowhere to be found. After tearing the room apart, we still didn't find the hat - and the room now looks worse than it did before I touched it!

I hate it when that happens!

If I'm not working on a Monday, I usually clean the house and it looks pretty good -- reasonably clean and tidy. (Okay, the lego gets kicked under the bed, but better there then in the hoover.) But by 7pm, it is a mess again with toys scattered everywhere, dirty dishes in the sink, newspapers left lying on the floor...

I feel what you're saying. Dusting and care of floors are some of my shared tasks, since we both work, and I do them weekends since that's all the time we have for that. During weekends is also the moment we get visits and tend to the outdoor chores that bring lawn clippings mud or sand to the indoors.

Sunday evenings, I get the pleasure of doing some floors... again.

this is precisely why i hate housework so much. you work so hard to get everything nice and clean and put away, all the dishes washed, all the laundry done, and then ! you make dinner, and you have dirty dishes AGAIN. and you change your clothes, and already more to wash. you get some mail, and there is a paper you have to take action on, so you put it on your desk, and it's the beginning of a new stack !!! and you open the window, and within minutes more dust is coming in !!!! and with the cats, it's even worse, you brush and brush them and get enough fur to make a whole nother cat, and then the SECOND you stop, they are already shedding more !!!!! it never ends !!!! i wouldn't mind cleaning things, if only i could do it ONCE and be done with it !!!

The whole family pitches in for thorough house clean every other Saturday. Shannon is in charge of the kitchen. She scours the stove, wipes down the cabinet, cleans inside the microwave, and so on. By the time we are finished with the whole house, it's lunch time. Everybody wants something different so pans are pulled out food is retrieved from the fridge and pantry, dishes come down, and so on. Shannon starts yelling and yelling! I just tell her, "Welcome to my world!"

Maintenance and cleaning is a claim of territory. If not done, nature takes over.

There was an interesting documentary done on the subject called "After people" Where they analyse the time it would take for nature to erase all trace of us.

That's why we like them. Since we can't do the same, we watch them do it.

During a discussion at work about sharing housework with a spouse, a collegue listening to us said:

"I share with my wife too, she cooks, I eat. I soil the clothes, she washes. She cleans the floors, I soil them. If I didn't do my part she'd have nothing to do!"

Creep!

Quentin Crisp didn't bother with housework; and discovered that "after the first year the dust really doesn't get any worse".

Reminds me of my grandfather, who on the subject of housework said, "Why keep a dog and bark yourself?" Pointing at my grandmother.

(They got divorced over 30 years ago, and he died in 1986 so he didn't say that recently!)

I also remember my dad teaching me how to peel potatoes. He explained that his technique was the best because "it takes so long that if you do it like that mum won't ask you to do it again." When my sister was born, my brother and I (then aged 10 and 12) tried to explain to him how to cook a roast dinner. In the end we did it with him taking the hot pans out of the oven when we told him to!
