Different reasons / mechanisms. Offers like this one are wrapped up in a nice package but they are just a promo code offer. Most free books I've seen using the promo code work for everyone unless it's tied to a membership offer.

The ones where they've gotten tricksies are member offers. Audible hated that people like me figured out how to find their freebies through searches. They figured out how to use member pricing (usually 30% off for most titles) and set freebies that way because it won't show up on a search. If a freebie comes from the publisher typically they set to zero the old-fashioned way. If it's from Audible then most of the time it's members-only now.

Except there's still that pesky variable called - YMMV. Some members get the books and others don't, and some non-members get the books and others don't.

In the list I maintain for current free books from Audible, I placed the last seven free books in a section titled "Provisional - YMMV". When I update the list to remove the books that are no longer free, I won't be able to tell if those books are still free or not. When signed out, they show up as paid books unlike the rest of the list which show up as free books.

Oh well, this just adds a new wrinkle to maintaining the list and with the promise of more benefits for members, it'll be an interesting ride.

I feel your pain, man. It's enough to make a monkey come unraveled. From what I've seen so far the challenge seems to be with those pesky "Listener Light" members or somesuch grey area. Every person I've seen have a problem with the member-only freebies are the ones who can sometimes get to member-only sales and sometimes can't. Still, knowing even that doesn't make your job any easier.

So, more clues for you. When I clicked the link from skinmaan's post that goes directly to the free book, it does not show as free. However, when I click on the link to the travelzoo free trial, then scroll down to the bottom of that page, there is a link to the same book and I was able to get it from there, for free.

I wasn't able to get the free trial as it asked me for a PROMO CODE, that I don't have.

I have a free trial code from travel zoo I wasn't able to use (I've had a membership in the last year). And I was NOT able to get wanderlust for free from the link or from the Travelzoo email. Very strange indeed.

If someone needs my free trial code let me know - I'd love to pass it along!
