Chinese spicy bean paste (I know it as 'toubanjhan') is a great flavoring ingredient, but it can really be hot! Much hotter than the Korean kochijhan and a completely different flavor.
I make a Szechuan-style Mapo Tofu, a tofu dish with just a hint of ground pork (100g) for enough to feed 3-4. A tablespoon of toubanjhan turns it into delicious rocket fuel!

Hubby cooks with it, he used it last night in our dry fried chicken. Yummy. I'll have to try it on pork chops.

The Korean Kochijhan tastes better on porkchops than the Chinese Tobanjhan for some reason. Perhaps it's because it's sweeter? You folks like spicy so don't be afraid to rub on a good coating. Half a teaspoon per side per thick chop spread out is what I'd use. But I really prefer it on a loin roast! That's where it shines.

It's the same stuff you'd use if making Korean Bebimbap, so yeah... brown, really thick, smooth, sweet and spicy!

Ordering a space heater for the main room of our cottage since the weather has been unseasonably cool this summer. It seems we've already passed through Septegust and are well into Augtober.

I highly recommend the oil filled radiator like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-Radi...illed+radiator

They take a bit to warm up - but once the oil is heated & circulating - hours of toasty heat for pennies of electricity. DeLonghi makes nice ones too.

I use one in the living room all fall & winter - really helps with the heating bills.

We used this DeLongi as our main heater in Japan. Saved a fortune! The one heater, centrally placed, kept the kitchen and living room comfortable during the 0c-15c winters. It was even enough to warm up the bedroom too if we opened the sliding doors between it and the living room.

I had seven students at my table (4 PhD students and 3 Masters students), two of whom had just been at a potluck at their advisor's house. They brought their leftover potluck contributions with them and offered them around the table (that was a first, since this was a sit-down dinner!). Their dishes were very good, and one student had even brought along his jar of "spicy bean paste" which he assured me wouldn't burn my mouth. Ha. Luckily, I'm no fool so I just put it on a little of my chicken dish. Hot. Very hot. I ate it, thanked him nicely, and made an excuse to get up to refill the water pitcher!
Ha! I asked for some "not too hot" curry at an Indian restaurant and what was set before me lit me up! I was like Godzilla; breathing flames with every bite. Well, Godzilla with a runny nose at any rate. But I ate it all, because I'm one hell of a tough man, and I recognize a test of manhood when I see it.

Oh, and Stitchawl—I couldn't find any Gochujang at our local Food Lion, but I'll ask my wife to look when she goes to Farm Fresh today for some staples.

Oh, be happy, definitely! Read a book, drink something nice, snuggle your dog ... and watch the teenager do the hard work!

Today, Aug 21, 2014, 58 minutes ago, marks being smoke-free, sixteen years, 58 minutes. Saving $52,596.36 that would have been just burned up. Time used for a better purpose: 1 year, 34 weeks, 6 days, 18 hours, 5 minutes. That last figure represents what would have been almost a year and two thirds spent huddled outside restaurants, theaters, libraries, offices, friend's houses, etc., etc., in the cold and rain furiously puffing away, getting my nicotine fix before getting back to what I had been doing before the craving hit.

Fifty two thousand dollars that would have been spent buying cigarettes... That is an outrageous figure, when you get right down to it. I guess it's not really saved... I must have spent it twice over, but at least I didn't just put a match to it and burn it up! YIPPEE!!

Having failed most tests of manhood, I carry a small packet of honey with me when I'm going to new restaurants where the food may be too spicy. When I'm in Korea, I carry the whole Honey Bear... Here in Thailand I can specify just how many Thai peppers I want added to a dish so I don't get into too much trouble. I find 4-5 Thai peppers to be about right. My wife has trouble with 2 of them. Some of my Thai friends don't count them; they add them by the large handful... But in Korea they use a crushed and dried red pepper, adding by spoonfuls, so no accurate measurement and usually insanely hot! Thank all Gods that honey stops the burn instantly! Much more effective than yogurt or milk. A drop or two on the tongue, rubbed around the mouth, and the pain is gone immediately so you can take the next mouthful and cry again!

I think that's very nice of you. When I was a teenager, no one ever offered to pay me to smoke weed in their pasture. Usually they'd just run us off!

My friends had planned on taking it easy returning from their holiday destination, like they did on the way to it. Taking several days to travel from their caravan site in the south of France. However, they are usually a lot quicker on the way back so I had already planned to give the house a good clean on Sunday and Monday.

This morning I got a text message telling me the will probably return on Tuesday or Wednesday (instead of Thursday or Friday).
