Paypal gave me a $5 credit this week so I bought an ebook that was recommended by a member here. Cost after discount was $0.00. For 2016 I purchased three books and spent 48 cents total. While this is gentle on my wallet it isn't helping my TBR list.

I think I found the mother of all freebies this week.

An indie author had a book up for temporary-free, the blurb made mention of bonus material including two bonus books, so I took the plunge. It being a Kindle-only book, I used Calibre to convert it to EPUB... which took an abnormally long time. Now, since there was no page count on Amazon, I figured this "book" was really a short story, maybe a novella. Oh, no...

The book finished converting, and I opened it in ADE to take a look. Estimated page count: over 3800 - but the navigation only lists the five chapters of the original work. I cracked it open in the Calibre editor to find:

- The advertised two additional books by the same author.
- Nine books by a second author.
- Three additional copies of the nine-book bundle, apparently identical.
- Translations of the first author's three books into three additional languages.

...making four copies each of a dozen different works.

Now, I'm all about giving value for money, but this seems just a little extreme to me. After chopping out the duplicated books and the translations, the five-megabyte book is down to a much thinner 420K. Part of this is due to the removal of an ad page that featured a cover image and the invitation to click a nonexistent link for more information...

I'm almost scared to start reading it now.

Those bookmarklets used to be useful, back before Amazon revamped the MYK page and added multi-delete functionality.

And in the process of completely redesigning the whole page, they broke the bookmarkets, which were never updated AFAIK since they weren't necessary anymore.


But back in the day, if you wanted to delete more than one book at a time, MDKI was a lifesaver.

Honestly, even with the 10 books at a time, I'm STILL deleting freebees. Just freebees without audiobooks, but it isn't all that much faster and very time consuming. I have over 700 now and think will end with over 1,000.

That's what I mean, it's quite salutary. Once you've invested a significant amount of time deleting freebies, you think long and hard about acquiring more. My rule of thumb is to ask myself if I'd pay $2 for a freebie. If not, it's too costly to get it for nothing.

In the meantime, you have my sympathy.

I've slipped from +6 to +1 in the last two days. A visit to a second-hand shop (2 paperbacks bought), a Kindle Daily Deal, a library loan and a freebie.

I'm really hoping they don't add anything I really want to the Humble Bundle later today.

I've been tempted to buy something. All the books on my reading list right now are out from the library and I have nothing to continue with my subchallenges right now. But I've got four books on hold at the library. Waiting. Patiently. Must not do it. that Omani novel I've got on my list is only $12.53. Or the pulp fiction one is only $6.83 or maybe my fantasy selection for $5.72?

It would keep my challenges going.
