Although continuation series can be hit-or-miss, I've enjoyed the titles in Anne Hillerman's continuation of her father's Leaphorn/Chee/Manuelito series.

The fifth and most recent (2019) title in the continuation, The Tale Teller, has dropped to $2.99 as part of the US Kindle Daily Deal, matched at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Tale-Teller-L...dp/B078QY1QVV/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-tale-teller-1

Quote:
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Legendary Navajo policeman Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn takes center stage in this riveting atmospheric mystery from New York Times bestselling author Anne Hillerman that combines crime, superstition, and tradition and brings the desert Southwest vividly alive.

Joe Leaphorn may have retired from the Tribal Police, but he finds himself knee-deep in a perplexing case involving a priceless artifact—a reminder of a dark time in Navajo history. Joe’s been hired to find a missing biil, a traditional dress that had been donated to the Navajo Nation. His investigation takes a sinister turn when the leading suspect dies under mysterious circumstances and Leaphorn himself receives anonymous warnings to beware—witchcraft is afoot.

While the veteran detective is busy working to untangle his strange case, his former colleague Jim Chee and Officer Bernie Manuelito are collecting evidence they hope will lead to a cunning criminal behind a rash of burglaries. Their case takes a complicated turn when Bernie finds a body near a popular running trail. The situation grows more complicated when the death is ruled a homicide, and the Tribal cops are thrust into a turf battle because the murder involves the FBI.

As Leaphorn, Chee, and Bernie draw closer to solving these crimes, their parallel investigations begin to merge . . . and offer an unexpected opportunity that opens a new chapter in Bernie’s life.

No, not yet. I picked up book...4(?) when it was on sale a while back, but decided to wait on that until the first book went on sale before reading.

The Big Crazy is the 11th and most recent (2019) in Julie Smith's Skip Langdon series, which started out traditionally pubbed, and now is pubbed by BookBNimble, which I consider a reliable publisher - but if you don't, you can skip the rest of this post. (And I've liked all the previous titles in this series, regardless of publisher...)

Crazy is free right now at Kindle US and UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y5XH9GZ/
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Crazy-G...dp/B07Y5XH9GZ/

Spoiler:
Quote:
PHONES ARE OUT AND THE CITY’S UNDER WATER—
A FIELD DAY FOR CRIMINALS! AND LOTS OF THEM ARE COPS…
August 29, 2005 - Doomsday: New Orleans is eighty per cent under water—no electricity, no phones, no 911 service, no rules. Facing the complete breakdown of systems and normality, New Orleans homicide Detective Skip Langdon is on her own to interpret and execute the only direction she’s given: Get out there and keep the peace.

With communications down and all emergency services on search and rescue, all Skip can hope to accomplish is helping the person right in front of her. More than once that person turns out to be Billy, a gutsy 15-year-old from Treme who’s in greater danger of being swamped by his chaotic home life than the Cat 5 hurricane Skip shelters him from.

When she escorts him home and discovers the scene of a possible homicide, homicide detecting must take a back seat to maintaining order—if not peace. Outrageous rumors are swirling, stirring up unrest, but what really bothers her is the one about a police department order to use the chaos as a cover for “cleaning up” by rounding up criminals and assassinating them. Now that just can’t be true. Can it?

But after she hears it for the third time, Skip teams up with the only cop in the city she’s positive she can trust, her former partner, movie-star handsome, kickass, praline-sweet Adam Abasolo. They may not be able to fix everything, but, as the bodies pile up, they are damn sure going to hit back at the guys who’re giving their department a black eye.

On any regular weekday, New Orleans lives up to its billing as The Big Crazy. In post-Katrina New Orleans, where the dirty cops and lunatics are running the asylum, author Julie Smith also takes us inside the actual asylum, Charity Hospital emergency psych unit, an unexpected oasis of comfort in stark contrast to endless amounts of ever-present filthy water and hordes of half-drowned people.

Smith strikes just the right note, capturing the massive tragedy of the events and the inevitable comedy as the survivors struggle to make sense of the closest thing to hell squared that any of them has ever seen.

Mystery fans who love hard-boiled women sleuths, lots of action and adventure, and offbeat police procedurals will love Detective Skip Langdon.

The most recent novel in the Millennium series is just 99p in the UK today.

The Girl Who Lived Twice - David Lagercrantz

amazon.co.uk | Kobo | Google Play

If you haven't read the fifth novel, don't read the blurb in the spoiler tags!

Spoiler:

"What are you going to do now?"
"I will be the hunter and not the hunted."

Lisbeth Salander's mentor and protector Holger Palmgren is dead, and she has been gone from Stockholm since his funeral. All summer, Mikael Blomkvist has been plagued by the fear that Salander's enemies will come after her.

He should, perhaps, be more concerned for himself.

In the pocket of an unidentified homeless man, who died with the name of a Swedish government minister on his lips, the police find a list of telephone numbers. Among them, the contact for Millennium magazine and the investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist. Following the scorched trail of her twin sister Camilla to Moscow, Salander nevertheless continues to watch over her old friend. Soon Blomkvist will need her help. But first, she has an old score to settle; and fresh outrage to avenge.

The next episode in David Lagercrantz's acclaimed continuation of Stieg Larsson's Dragon Tattoo series is a thrilling ride that scales the heights of Everest and plunges the depths of Russia's criminal underworld. In a climax of shattering violence, Lisbeth Salander will face her nemesis.

For the girl with the dragon tattoo, the personal is always political - and ultimately deadly.

Translated from the Swedish by George Goulding

Killer's Payoff (87th Precinct Mysteries Book 6) by Ed McBain is $0.99 at Amazon US.

I've been picking up these old 87th Precinct books as they go on sale and I don't have this one, so it likely hasn't been so cheap for a bit.

Quote:
It’s like an old-time gangster movie: a speeding car, a blazing gun…and suddenly a guy walking down the street without a care in the world is lying in the gutter without a head on his shoulders. But who pulled the high-powered trigger that turned Sy Kramer from a blackmailer into a chalk outline? Was it the politician’s wife with a pornographic past? The soda-pop tycoon desperate to keep a business-busting bungle bottled up? Or was it whoever was paying Kramer a small fortune to hide what must’ve been one very big bad? It falls to detectives Steve Carella and Cotton Hawes of the 87th Precinct to pound the pavement of the city and beat the bushes of the backwoods for the suspect with the best motive, the most blistering weapon, and the biggest set of brass ones. En route, they’ll meet pretty ladies and petty lowlifes, great white hunters and gray flannel ad execs, and, when the going gets rough, maybe even their match. It’s all in several long days’—and even longer nights’—work for the guys who make their living behind the badge, and under the gun.

Farewell, My Lovely by Raymond Chandler is $2.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Crime fiction master Raymond Chandler's second novel featuring Philip Marlowe, the "quintessential urban private eye" (Los Angeles Times).

Philip Marlowe's about to give up on a completely routine case when he finds himself in the wrong place at the right time to get caught up in a murder that leads to a ring of jewel thieves, another murder, a fortune-teller, a couple more murders, and more corruption than your average graveyard.

An early Christmas themed mystery markdown...

Jane and the Twelve Days of Christmas is the 12th in Stephanie Barron's series featuring Jane Austen as the protagonist. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. It was only VERY briefly on sale in December 2016, so even this Christmas themed markdown may not last very long, so grab it now if you want it.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Twelve-Christ...dp/B00K4BA8ZM/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/jan...austen-mystery

ADD: And also on sale at Kindle UK for £1.84: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00K4BA8ZM

Spoiler:
Quote:
Jane Austen turns sleuth in this delightful murder mystery set over the twelve days of a Regency-Era Christmas party.

Christmas Eve, 1814: Jane Austen has been invited to spend the holiday with family and friends at The Vyne, the gorgeous ancestral home of the wealthy and politically prominent Chute family. As the year fades and friends begin to gather beneath the mistletoe for the twelve days of Christmas festivities, Jane and her circle are in a celebratory mood: Mansfield Park is selling nicely; Napoleon has been banished to Elba; British forces have seized Washington, DC; and on Christmas Eve, John Quincy Adams signs the Treaty of Ghent, which will end a war nobody in England really wanted.

Jane, however, discovers holiday cheer is fleeting. One of the Yuletide revelers dies in a tragic accident, which Jane immediately views with suspicion. If the accident was in fact murder, the killer is one of Jane’s fellow snow-bound guests. With clues scattered amidst cleverly crafted charades, dark secrets coming to light during parlor games, and old friendships returning to haunt the Christmas parties, whom can Jane trust to help her discover the truth and stop the killer from striking again?

A whole bunch of titles in the Inspector Appleby series by Michael Innes have dropped to £1.99 at Kindle UK. It appears to be most of the first half-or-so of the series.

I'm having trouble getting my usual search URL to work, so here is a messy link for a generic Michael Innes search, sorted by ascending price. There is one title at £0.99 and then the £1.99 price drops follow...

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?i=digital...=sr_adv_kindle

ADD: It looks as if pretty much the same selection (I don't have time to match one-for-one) is on sale in the US for $2.99 each, and the one odd-ball at $0.99. £1.99 is a bit less than $2.99, if you can travel, and don't incur foreign transaction fees...

Again, here's a link from the advanced search: https://www.amazon.com/s?i=digital-t...1&ref=sr_adv_b

An omnibus of the first four titles in Deryn Lake's John Rawlings historical mystery series has dropped to $0.99/£0.99 at Kindle US/UK respectively. I've read and enjoyed several of the titles in this series. That's a pretty good price for four books, or even for two or three if you already have a couple. All of the titles have been on sale individually before, so check carefully before you buy.

John Rawlings Investigates (Part One) contains:
  • Death in the Dark Walk
  • Dead at the Beggar’s Opera
  • Death at the Devil’s Tavern
  • Death in the Romney Marsh

Sovereign, the 3rd in the Matthew Shardlake series by C.J. Sansom, is currently $1.99.

Quote:
In Sovereign, Shardlake faces the most terrifying threat in the age of Tudor England: imprisonment in the Tower of London.

Shardlake and his loyal assistant, Jack Barak, find themselves embroiled in royal intrigue when a plot against King Henry VIII is uncovered in York and a dangerous conspirator they've been charged with transporting to London is connected to the death of a local glazer.
