E-readers aren't mainstream and have been introduced with various terms--and in America it's mainly be introduced as a brand name. People see e-readers of whatever brand here and often ask "Is that a Kindle (or iPad lately!)" much like they ask for a "Kleenex" when needing a tissue!

Again, I have no problem with people playing their game on here and trying to use the term. But it will never catch on in the mainstream--especially in English speaking areas. Remember the "freedom" fries thing in the US. There's a ton of anti-French resentment in the US, the UK etc. so on top of being a foreign word, the fact that it's French will hurt it's adoption with many.

If that's right then those on here who don't like the word for whatever reason have nothing to worry about - apart from a few whackos in the Lounge they will never have to encounter it. It's a prediction that may turn out to be right or not. Maybe we should just let the universe unfold as it will - I'm cool with that.

But that's a different thing from saying that the word liseuse shouldn't gain currency because it is, in some way, a bad word.

In fact, given that the Rocket Reader is listed as also being launched in 1998, i'd call that a tie. who knows ? maybe the cybook was actually launched a few months before the rocket reader.

Yes, what you were doing was reviving a tired old straw man used over and over on this thread-- that the people opposed to the use of the word are opposed to all foreign words being introduced into English. Agree. I don't see why people care. Even if it catches on I wouldn't use it as I just don't like the word and have a disdain for all things French.

But I don't use the term "e-reader" in daily conversation either. I own a Kindle, if I'm talking about reading I say "I read ________ on my Kindle." I'm a person that likes to speak in specifics rather than generalities I guess!

It is pretty mainstream-- it is featured in an episode of The Office (US version) and in a current AT-n-T commercial. (I think it was AT-n-T-- somebody advertising wireless broadband) amongst other mainstream media references.

It's gaining publicity in that sense, but most people don't know the term.

If you showed the commercials with people doing it to people and asked them if they knew the term for what the people where doing was, most would have no idea. Especially in older generations who haven't had exposure to the term from video games (Mirror's Edge) etc. etc. as coverage of the sport (outside of commercials etc.) has largely been in media aimed at younger folk.

Yes, you said that, but so do many other countries and companies. The French did not invent the book or the ebook reader. The fact that you want to us a silly word that no one else cares to use has little to do with any of that. You are welcome to call your reader anything you want, but when you use that term in my presence then I will exercise my right to tell you how silly it is.

The world has perfectly good names for e-readers and they will be used and continue to be used.

Also for your information the Sony predecessors (the clie and other) to their first official e-book reader (with e-ink) were likely out before your references in any case. Palm devices and pds etc. etc.

How about that world cup?
