Wow - it seems as though the French squad is in total "meltdown" - one of their star players, Nicolas Anelka, sent home in disgrace for arguing with the coach, and the rest of the squad "on strike" as a result...

Well for me the random reasons where in cases where there were no pro teams in the state (much less town/city) I was born and raised in. So it's really having a pure love of sports first, then finding the teams to root for. From your post, it just sounds like you've never been in to sports, which is fine. And explains why you don't "get" the passion us sports lovers have for our sports and the teams we follow.

It's so weird.. One of my french friends is paralyzed by this.. He of course expected them to win the world cup.

Anelka, Evra, Gourcuff... I feel those players to be excellent! The English team is suffering of the same ills. Both teams have world class players but seem to be missing a spark. It's the task of a coaching team to set it ablaze. Chemistry and a will to win are what's missing...
