Dedicated readers need to be judged solely on their capabilities as an e-reader as that's all they do. Smartphones, PDAs, Tablets etc. need to be judged on all their capabilities. We should discuss what the reading experience is like on them. But people shouldn't bash them for shorter battery life, screens not as easy on the eyes etc.--at least not to the same standards you would something like the Jetbook (an LCD dedicated reader). And that's because really no one with their head on straight is going to buy a tablet primarily to use as a reader, and will be aware that they're making tradeoffs on the reading front to get the net access, HD video, games, Apps etc. So know one EXPECTS it to be as good for reading straight text as a dedicated reader, because they're NOT buying it to be a device they mainly use for reading in most cases. It's really the case that the avid readers who aren't interested in multi-function devices shouldn't even post in tablet threads. Why waste time bashing a device because it doesn't fit your needs. Move on and discuss those that do fit your needs. Again, why tablets will need a sub-forum once they start rolling out (not for this one specifically, but for all tablet devices). |

what you should say is it doesn't include features you'd like to see in the out-of-the-box OS. features which may be included in future updates or with future applications. apple leaving out a webcam was smart for them. first, they'll add it to a later generation device and sell you one of those. second, this is designed to be a media player not a media creator. the touch doesn't have a camera either, doesn't stop them from selling. who is going to want to hold up a large unit just to take a photo? use your cell phone or an actual camera for that. It's $130 extra for a model with 3G capability. It's not locked so you can get any networks plan. But they have a deal worked out with AT&T. $14.99 for 250GB, $29.99 for unlimited access. |

And no contract..which is pretty amazing. Not that I'm that eager to give AT&T any more money every month.

I get what you're saying, too. Tablet to tablet, I'm not sold on this one. Maybe as a multi-touch device to multi-touch. It is running an OS named and built for phones, after all.

From Ars Technica
* There is no camera on the iPad. * There's no way to lock the screen into landscape or portrait mode. Some apps lock the screen (like on the iPhone) but there's no universal way to lock the screen as you might on a Kindle or Nook. * The landscape and portrait switching works in all 4 orientations, so you could read upside down if you liked. * There's a sleep/wake button on the top, just like an iPhone. Also, there is a headphone jack and a speaker on the top (and one speaker on the bottom). * There is a volume rocker switch on the side, just like the iPhone. You can also silent the device. * No brightness controls outside of the system preferences, just like on the iPhone. * You can use any bluetooth keyboard you want, instead of Apple's keyboard dock. You could use the case/stand with your existing bluetooth keyboard. * You cannot use a bluetooth mouse, however. * The screen resolution is 1024x768 (4:3). * It can play 720p movies from iTunes. * The case itself is some crazy soft rubbery microfiber material that no Apple rep could or would identify. * The case/stand is $39. * The case is very flat and solid like a Kindle case, but you can use it to prop the iPad up into a triangle so you can watch movies or use it like a laptop. * The keyboard dock is $69 and the normal dock is $39. * The browser is like Safari on the iPhone but it has toolbar favorites like on the Mac. * It's much easier to click and navigate on the iPad than on an iPhone, just by virtue of it being larger. * Size/weight is very comparable to a Kindle DX, which is twice as heavy as a Kindle 2. |

It basically has a Unlocked 3G GSM / UMTS / HSDPA Modem built in. There is a subscription, however it's not tied to a contract so you can start and stop it at any time on the device it self. At&T is going o offer two plans $14.99 for 250 Mb & $29.99 for Unlimited data and I believe both come with free unlimited At&T Wifi. |

oops. appears i was wrong. it DOES include a microphone. so i guess skype will run on this, if apple allows it. i wonder how they got AT&T to agree to that one.

There isn't really any way for them to prevent Google Voice from running, since its a browser app. Skype is still wi-fi only on the iPhone.

Glory Hallelujah!
JOY JOY JOY!! My dreams come true! How many times have I wished for a big iPod to read on?
I hate eInk! It is soooo hard on my eyes, which as you know are nearly blind. Grey on grey is really hard to read. I did lots better with my old EBW1140 and its backlight. The iPod screen is very very clear to me. I've wished every day that it was available in ebook size!! How much is it going to cost? Because I'm going to have a Sony for sale! THANK YOU, APPLE!!!! ![]() |

I don't see a lot of need for 3G in a Tablet myself. For the iPhone or other smart phones it's more of a concern since that's something that people carry everywhere in their pocket or purse. So you can pull it out when you need the internet and aren't near a hot spot. A 10" tablet doesn't seem like something most people will take everywhere they go--and would more grab it when going to a place with hot spot like they do their laptop or netbook now. So on that front I'm glad there's wifi only options, so only the people who need 3G in it have to pay the premium for it to be built in to the device. |

$130 on top of each if you want 3G built in (plus have to pay for some 3G plan, but you can choose any company. AT&T will have plans for $14.99 for 250GB a month, $29.99 unlimited. |

You know what I see this as? A killer student device. If the schools keep to the WiFi version, the 16GB model would hold a year's worth of textbooks, give access to the school's printers and the resource libraries. A student (whether elementary, high school or college) would be able to read the textbooks, take notes, compose reports and do homework all without having to lug around all those expensive, constantly-outdated, easy-to-get-damaged paper textbooks that cost so much! I could see the school districts getting student discounts and the students taking the iPad from grade school onward. Would save the backs of little kids, that's for sure.
