He said DRM-Epub and Non-DRM mobi. The Astak's will do both at once. No need to switch firmware.

Thanks for the suggestions.

(Not worried about reader being able to read DRM'd mobi books as obviously there's ways around that )

Yes, the ECO Reader does. It's a version of the Hanlin 6" with an Australian distributor who provides excellent customer support. Christine Bell (no relation) is a member of this forum as CBell.

Whoops, that's what you get if you respond to posts while you're sleepy (I never saw the "free" bit at the DRM-free mobi...)

The Mini does that too. But I do find the default font-size too large on the mobi files.

I was just wondering...

At Fictionwise, you can buy a book for a friend...

So, now I have this friend from the US, who buys me a US restricted book. He pays for it, but it will only appear in my bookshelf. Would I be able to download it?

Can you? Last time I checked (few days ago) "buying for a friend" meant paying for some gift certificate, that the friend could then use to buy the book. There was also an entry in the FAQ saying that it's currently not possible to have other people buying items in your wish list for you, but they were working on it.

From fictionwise:

Quote:
Fill out the form below to send someone a Fictionwise Gift Certificate. Once you submit the form, you are automatically taken to the checkout page and you pay for the Gift Certificate just as you would when you make an eBook purchase at Fictionwise.

After it is purchased, the person you bought the Gift Certificate for is sent an email and told how to redeem it. Essentially, they register at Fictionwise, then apply the Gift Certificate code, and the gift is put into their account.
I read that as a "you get a certificate which contains a book"...

From the redeem page:

Quote:
* Any books or micropay dollars the certificate contains will be added to your account automatically.
* You may download gift pack books from your Bookshelf immediately after redemption. For help on how to download to various devices see our Reading Devices FAQ
* You may use gift certificate micropay dollars to buy any book using the Micropay FAQ
* If you have additional gift certificates, or need to try again, just go to the shopping cart and type the Gift Code into the "Coupon or Promotional Code" area near the bottom of the cart and press SUBMIT. Micropay dollars will be added to your account or gift pack books will be displayed in your cart with zero cost. You can check out as usual to move them to your bookshelf. Need more help on using promotional codes? See our Coupon and Promotion Code FAQ.
* Need more help? See our Support page for other frequently asked questions or to send us a question via email.

Are you sure about it ? Of course if you own the Astak, my point is moot. But I think i asked the same question to Robertb and he seemed to confirm there as well the double FW. Or maybe it was for the DRm versions. That would be very very interesting, as I have a lot of non DRM (by now) mobi, and I would not have to convert them to ePUB.

There is the old firmware still available that allows you to read DRMed Mobi, so in a way you can select if you want DRM for mobi or ePub via ADE, you can not just have them both.

So, DRM Mobi = No DRM ePub, DRM ePub = No DRM Mobi.

I'm absolutely positive that with an Astak you can read both DRM'd ePub and DRM FREE Mobi with the same firmware. What you can't do is read DRM'd EPUB and DRM'd Mobi on the same device. I had a Pocket Pro in hand and tried it myself.

I had interpreted the gift certificate would have to be used to buy the book.

Has anyone tried?

Not me... I don't know anybody personal who also uses Fictionwise.

I have around $2 left in Micropay. If one of you can find a book you want for that or less that has the geo restrictions I'm willing to try and send it as a gift.

Like maybe the new $1 Orbit book or something.
