For 'field' the overhead of invoking the formatter function was significant compared to what the function did (one attribute reference). This isn't true for raw_field, which deals adding separators to lists. I could still inline it but it wouldn't save much and could actually cost because I would need to add another 'if' in the main interpreter loop.

Currently the parser and the interpreter are the same code. I am considering building a separate parser and caching the parse tree. For composites and color rules this could increase performance by an order of magnitude. It would also permit me to do more inlining because the choice would be made at parse time, not execution time. The challenge is to do it without breaking anything. I also wonder if it is worth it -- is performance with the improved interpreter (still) a problem?

Calibre display messed up by display sleep on Catalina

I am running the beta on Catalina 10.15.6, Mac mini with 4k Retina display. I have the appearance setting set to 'Auto' to change the display from light to dark mode with daylight. I have the Mac set to prevent sleep when computer is off, with power nap enabled. The machine is only turned off or rebooted if something weird happens. It has currently been up 21 days.

Beginning with Calibre Beta 4.99.13 and continuing with 4.99.14, I noticed that the first time I hit a key in the morning to wake the display, that Calibre's colors are changed so that every other row is black text on black background. I have attached a screenshot. If I highlight a black row, it shows, but then goes black again when I highlight a different row.

It isn't simply the display sleeping and waking that causes this, but something that happens overnight. The display often sleeps for a few hours during the day, but I haven't noticed the Calibre color changing then. Other operations of these beta versions seem normal.

I am not aware of anything specifically I set up to do weird stuff in the wee hours.

Does changing the macos color scheme from light to dark and back with calibre running cause this?

Yes, it does. It looks like Calibre's response to switching from dark mode to light mode is not complete. When I switch from dark to light, half the rows in the main screen keep a dark background. In other windows, like the preferences window, the text remains white while the background changes from black to gray, so the text is barely readable.

Switching from light to dark mode seems to work fine--all elements appear to change to dark. But once I have gone to dark mode, I can't get back to a readable light mode without restarting Calibre.

Obviously what is happening overnight, even though the display is asleep, is that the mode is being changed from light to dark. Then in the morning, when I first look at Calibre it has switched back to light mode creating the problem.

Works for me on my Catalina machine. In calibre preferences under look & feel make sure you are using "calibre sty;e" as the user interface style, not system default. The system default theme doesnt work well with dark mode.

EDIT: Never mind, I forgot to update Qt on my test machine, I can reproduce it.

I verified that I am using "Calibre Style" as the user interface style.

Looks like you found and fixed the issue. Looking forward to the next update. Thanks!

Released 4.99.15 with the following fixes:

1) macOS: Fix changing from dark to light mode while calibre is running
not working properly
2) macOS: Fix mouse interaction with completion popups not working
3) Viewer highlights panel: Fix searching not working
4) Viewer highlights panel: Fix double clicking on chapter names causing
an error

We appear to be converging to stability at last. Hopefully this is the
final beta.

After it comes out of beta, how much longer until it's made the full release?

Bug 1: Clicking 4-times on text in Firefox on the text will deselect the text you are clicking and select the next line.

Bug 2: If you select an image, the image will be blue.

Suggestion 1: Add the ability to search the Bookmarks panel.

Suggestion 2: Add the ability to change which search engine to use for Search for selection on the net function.

Suggestion 3: Show the Style name as tooltip when hovering the Style in the Add notes window.

Suggestion 4: Display highlights per chapter in the server viewer highlights panel similar to the ToC panel.

Suggestion 5: Move the style and highlight entry closer to the left edge in the panel to make room for highlight. See attached image.

See Kovid's earlier post. He says he hopes to release Calibre 5 before the end of the month.

Kovid should not be held to this as "anything can happen in the next half hour". And I will take to task anyone who gives Kovid a hard time over the release date.

Anyone recognise the quote above? It is from an old children's TV show.

@jony08: That's how firefox works. And you can already change the search engine in the viewer preferences under selection behavior.

The shortcut Ctrl+Enter used to apply the Add notes window is used by most browsers to select the URL field. Could the shortcut be changed to something else in the Content server?

IMHO it would be useful to be able to edit the styles in the Add notes window and also to be able to delete the styles that are available from the beginning.
