I bought Boox tips, they are supposed to be softer than the one found in the Boox stylus. They probably are suitable for Alita's stylus too:

I don't even know how to begin trying a stylus - do I need to apply a screen protector or I don't. I guess, it is needed for the original Note without frontlight - it does not have any glass on the screen.
But anyway, I have no need for a stylus. Don't ask me why I bought those spare tips

Every time I tried it - it just became invisible, no more storage added. At least looking from the connected to Alita PC side.
So I use a 512 MB card as external, everything is perfect then. I did not have such a need to have lots of internal storage space. My dictionaries and books are accessible on the external card. Therefore, no need to switch to 128 GB either.
I want Kiwix with Wikipedia on my Likebook devices and the files that I want require over 60GB of internal storage, which I can make available to this program via an internal SD card.
I would like to have a portable data storage "portable" and that is not the case with SD card_in_a_tray that is also covered by the cover - there is USB OTG for that.
The internal SD connection in the tray is ideal for internal storage expansion.

There are so many reasons to use the SD as internal :
  • Fairemail for instance store emails on internal only not external
  • Termux needs internal to preserve symlinks/rights and so on
  • Syncthings needs internal not external
  • For big files over 4 GB sync via nextcloud or syncthings they cannot be store on Fat32 external.

I also want Kiwix with wikipedia installed on my likebook

Yes, it is better to apply a screen protector. The one provided by boyue is great but very difficult to apply because the screen is huge.
Tips : I used steam in my kitchen to avoid any dust particle.

Kiwix: The app is a lightweight piece of software reading bigger files stored on your device or SD card.

It says you can store files on SD card. If you can't - it is a bug in Kiwix.
I would like to have wikipedia offline in my e-reader, but I would like to have it in lingvo or stardict or any other format GoldenDict can understand.
I do not use dictionaries or reference material in an e-reader separately, only looking up words and expressions when reading books.
Not sure if Kiwix can be integrated with Cool Reader 3, or with some other reader app.
But Cool Reader 3 is open source, so you can modify it any way you like.
For testing purposes, I built it from sources and installed it and it is working fine.

I have tested the Exfat format on my 128 GB evo plus micro SD card, it was not recognised at all.

In the tray the card formatted with ExFAT does not mount unfortunately

What does a mobile formatted card do in the tray?
This is not intended for removal.

That's usually the case. Adoptable storage (that's how google calls SD cards that can be "adopted" as internal storage) uses ext4 or f2fs when internally formatted, as the fs needs to support xattr and posix permissions.

When formatted externally vfat is used unless your vendor choosed otherwise, which is not usually the case. That means that you're pegged to 4GB per file limit.

So it ends as a matter of preference. Technically (external) sdcards have some limitations from the pov of what apps can do with them. It is usually cool to use them as MediaStorage (for music, pictures, documents, etc) but they don't provide as many features as when "adopted". They also don't provide encryption, so a person that has physical access to your device and extract the card can steal your info.

OTOH an "adopted" sdcard is useless if you can't login to the main account of your device, so better to have a good backup if you store there some valuable info.

That is why I prefer to let the micro sd in the slot and have all features with the "adopted" way. Nevertheless my backups should be strong in case of a broken screen or broken power switch (syncthing is here to sync all my folders). This is a good balance between features and security (if stolen).

When I tried the internal formatting, I was not able to access that "adopted" storage. I connected Alita to my PC, and wanted to transfer some books into that (or internal) storage - but the size of the internal storage was still the same, not increased by the card at all. So yes, I was able to copy books into the internal storage, but the effect was as if I had no card at all. They were copied into the original internal storage of the original size. With external storage, at least I can see and use a 512 GB card. The 4 GB is not an issue, there are no books or dictionaries compatible with GoldenDict of such sizes.

But it seems there are some buggy apps and they cannot access an external card. It might be related to incompatibilities with newer android versions, those apps need to be updated. I do remember such issues even with Cool Reader at some point, after introducing a newer android.

Most of this is gobbledegook to me. In reply to my query last year Boyue said that an SD card should be used as external storage in the Alita and that its use as internal storage was not recommended. However, there appears to be disagreement with this on the forum.
