Dreadnought: Britain, Germany, and the Coming of the Great War. By Robert K. Massie.

It seems like interest in World War I has increased lately. It's hard for me to read about it--armies exchanging, in battle, the same territory over and over; trench warfare; battles in which tens of thousands were killed being a routine thing . . . . But reading about the dreadnoughts in World War I (a type of warship of that time) might be more pleasant.

This is an enormous book--1040 pages!

And it's got great ratings--4.6 (216) at Amazon.

The price? Only $1.99, an 86% markdown from the digital list price of $13.99 (that's a bargain in itself).

The Quest for Kim documents the attempts, some successful, and some not, by author Peter Hopkirk, who has written a lot about India/central Asia and the Great Game period, to trace actual places and people in Kipling's Kim. I've read several books by Hopkirk and enjoyed them all, including this one, which has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

However, with the novel as its focus, Quest is a little different than Hopkirk's more traditional books, which are histories. I myself had read Kim a long time ago, then read Quest, and then got inspired to re-read Kim, and enjoyed it in a different way with some of the background I now had.

I hadn't read that one yet (Trespassers) and now I think I only need one more of his histories. They are normally pretty expensive, although I note there is another one, On Secret Service East of Constantinople: The Plot to Bring Down the British Empire (also published in DTB, I think, with the title, Like Hidden Fire: The Plot to Bring Down the British Empire) available for £2.99 at Amazon UK, which is still not too bad a price:

I don't know anything about GitHub, but I have heard of it before. The book description says that it "is the largest host of source code in the world." Sounds important.

And GitHub must have been invented by a Southerner, I know that. Anyone else would have called it "GetHub."

Assorted DIY hobby learning titles in Wiley's Dummies series, including a number of rather nice language learning and musical education books (mostly at the $4.99-$6.99 range).

For language-learning hobbyists, @ $6.99 each in the All In One For Dummies series which are omnibus editions of a number of previous learning/grammar/vocabulary books are available for German, Italian, Spanish, and French (covering French-Canadian, at least of the Quebec variety, which is moderately unusual for anglophone learning materials

). For comparison purposes, they're regularly priced at $27.99 CAD at Kobo.

And at $4.99 there's Japanese for Dummies. These all come with downloadable supplementary audiofiles. The ones for the Italian AIO book you can get directly from the website linked in the beginning of the text. The ones for the other titles you have to hoop jump a little for, by visiting their Wiley Booksupport site and enter either the ISBN or the book title and wait for the search results to pop up your title and click on it to select and download the zip files (don't try to fill in all 3 fields with accurate information, or you will get no search results). NB: some of them are very large files at hundreds of mb, and they advise you to download via a stable connection from your desktop computer.

There's also some DIY books for learning banjo, guitar, classical music appreciation, violin, regular and blues harmonica (sold separately), piano, mandolin, and also some computer programming and job help stuff.

SharewareonSale.com (they're legit, I've downloaded freebies from them several times; the guy, Ashraf, who runs the site is great) is offering the software. This ebook is obviously more basic that some of the ones that I have posted as one of Packt's giveaways of the day.

The book retails for $49.99. It's free now, as a "limited time offer."

Learn more about the book, download it, well, do a lot of different things at this SOS webpage.

Downloading the book and installing it, after you've done what little that it takes to set up an account, is easy peasy. I won't mention any names, but I wish that websites, like Giveaway of the Day (software freebies only), would take a cue from SOS, and make it not so hard to download and install their software!
