Howard is out of copyright in death+70 countries, but possibly not in the US.

I'm pretty sure I got my got my complete Conan from the library here.

I can understand Mobileread not wanting to get involved in someone else's copyright issues, and I'd probably do the same as you have done given the same set of circumstances.

But not being able to tell your American subscribers that a particular work of fiction is in the Public Domain in their country and it is in the MR download library, just because it is not in the Public Domain elsewhere, seems a disservice to the American users.

Maybe a rule that users can say a given work is in the public domain in a specific country but only if they include a list of three or so PD Download libraries they could check to see if it was available would satisfy the copyright police.

I do know that shutting down discussion on what is or is not in PD in specific countries and where a work can be found completely, seems very unsatisfying.

Nobody's saying that. You're very welcome to tell anyone about a work that's in the US (or any other) public domain. But if you choose to download a work that is not in the public domain in your country be discreet: don't use these forums to tell world + dog that you're pirating books. We don't want to know.

No, I and HarryT were both saying if you told the computer you were in a public domain country to get it FREE don't mention that.
If you paid for it then you got it legally.

Or in other words, if you did something illegal to obtain the book, keep quiet about it.

If it's on Amazon, Kobo et all then surely we would have to assume that the publisher has the rights, not that it's pirated.

If it is pirated then surely that is up to the rights holder/Amazon to sort out.
