Damn. There are two books that I'd like in the Downpour sale (1984 and Forgotten). Both are marked "unavailable in United Kingdom"

Possibly, and if I wanted them badly enough I might try it, but I always feel slightly uneasy using such tricks.

I'm tempted by the book about the Oregon Trail but it's read by the author, which never goes well in my experience.

I've found that a lot depends on the individual author. Did you try listening to the sample?

With the Audible Manager, you can load audiobooks to most MP3 players, anyway, but it is another piece of software to authorize and manage. And you depend on Audible to maintain backups (for audio, I suspect some don't download all of their books, just due to size). With DRM-Free, you can play where you want, convert formats, make backups, etc.
Very informative. Thanks.

In addition to saying, "there may be some advantage for you to buy from Audible instead of Downpour," I should have said, "but there may also be some advantage for you to buy from Downpour instead of Audible." ha

If it makes you feel any better, we (in the United States) often cannot get books that are sold in the U.K. ha

What was off-putting for me is the length--16.7 hours. I love history, but I didn't think that I could stand to listen to 17 hours of adventures in a covered wagon. And even if I could stand it, I lose attention easily (got it from my father) and would probably not take in most of it. Would be a better use of time to listen to something else. Now if an abridged edition comes out . . . .

I bet the adventure seemed a lot longer to the folks in the wagons.

I hadn't thought about that but, yeah, it must've. ha

Especially since there were few attacks by native Americans ("Indians") on this particular trail at this particular period in time (http://www.oregontrailcenter.org/His...ls/Indians.htm) to keep things exciting.

$3.95 -- The Perfect Son -- Barbara Claypole White / Justine Eyre (10.8 hrs) --> R= 4.2

Quote:
Fiction > Literary

From a distance Felix Fitzwilliam, the son of an old English family, is a good husband and father. But, obsessed with order and routine, he's a prisoner to perfection. Disengaged from the emotional life of his North Carolina family, Felix has let his wife, Ella, deal with their special-needs son by herself.

A talented jewelry designer turned full-time mother, Ella is the family rock...until her heart attack shatters their carefully structured existence. Now Harry, a gifted teen grappling with the chaos of Tourette's syndrome, confronts a world outside his parents' control, one that tests his desire for independence.

As Harry searches for his future and Ella adapts to the limits of her failing health, Felix struggles with his past and present roles. To prevent the family from being ripped apart, they must each bend with the inevitability of change and reinforce the ties that bind.

$9.95 -- Civilization of the Middle Ages -- Norman F Cantor / F Davidson (28.7 hrs) --> R= 4.1

Quote:
History > World

In 1963, Norman F. Cantor published his breakthrough narrative history of the Middle Ages. Here is a significant revision, update, and expansion of that work.

The Civilization of the Middle Ages incorporates current research, recent trends in interpretation, and novel perspectives, especially on the foundations of the Middle Ages and the Later Middle Ages of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. A sharper focus on social history, Jewish history, women’s roles in society, and popular religion and heresy distinguish the book. While the first and last sections of the book are almost entirely new and many additions have been incorporated in the intervening sections, Cantor has retained the powerful narrative flow that made earlier editions so accessible.
