I have had some success in converting a KDF file produced by the Kindle Previewer 3.0 beta into a KFX file that can be sideloaded onto a Kindle device or app. I have attached a sample converted from a public domain EPUB.

I have tried it on the Previewer (after changing the extension to .azw8), a Kindle Paperwhite II (5.7.2.1 firmware), Kindle for Android 4.21.0, and Kindle for iOS 4.17. As far as I can tell it functions properly on all of these. If anyone tries it and notices a problem please let me know.

I can report that your .kfx sideloads fine onto my current Basic Kindle (aka KT2) with fw 5.6.5.

Both hyphenation and ligatures display correctly.

How about kerning?

Yes, kerning too.

Up top old mobi file (not kerned), bottom kerned and ligatured Frankenstein on Voyage with 5.7.2.1 with Bookerly. (sorry just a picture done with my phone, not sure how to do real screenshots on Voyage)

Thanks. That helps. The photo is plenty good enough to see what you are showing. It's actually one of the better screen shots with a phone that I've seen. Now if we can only find out the secret to making KFX.

Just like jhowell did. Run through previewer, convert with a script from kdf to kfx, sideload. If you can live with the limitations. Cover doesn't show up on homescreen, and the cover in book shows up as an image with location on the bottom. In a real kfx book the cover fills the screen and keeping the aspect ratio correct (e.g. white bars on left and right for skinny covers). Advantage? Only one file that needs to be sideloaded. I could live with that.

Edit: oops my bad. All kfx books that I have show the cover incorrect with page number on bottom (all the books were originally released before kfx). The one exception is Little Sister (February Kindle First book) that shows the cover in full screen without page number in bottom. Either the automatic conversion of old books to kfx is faulty, or Amazon changed something when processing new releases.

That last file contains a number of high quality jpeg-xr images from the book. I don't understand how the book worked without them. Perhaps there are lower quality images elsewhere as a fallback or perhaps there were cached images somewhere on the kindle.

I only have one kindle so I am unable to test whether this process would have allowed to book to be side-loaded to a different kindle. I suspect that it would not have worked due to DRM.

All of this gives me hope that if the kfx format is ever understood well enough, it may be possible to create and side-load non-Amazon books in kfx format and have them rendered with enhanced typesetting.

The articals about .kfx file and the .sdr folder associated with the books make sense now.

Anybody have a work around

You are quoting a 6 month old post. A lot of things have changed since then. Well, it is still not possible to remove DRM from kfx books. But the download to pc, transfer via usb gives you a azw3 book that can be dedrmed just fine. That is the only workaround for now since Kindle4PC has been updated to kfx as well (far as I know). You won't have enhanced typesetting, but jhowell created a kfx file that can be sideloaded with enhanced typesetting. (See post #362 in this thread just a few post before yours).

Dedrm still works with Kindle4PC? If it still works then there would be two ways to remove drm - Kindle4PC and download.

I am not releasing any other KFX-related software at this time.
