BIG Book about the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham--Greatly Marked Down.

I have more than a passing interest in this book because I lived in B'ham when many of the things in the book transpired. I was too young to know most of what was going on or to understand what I did know. I do have some memories, though. The prejudice and violence was shameful. And stupid. Really, really stupid.

Carry Me Home: Birmingham, Alabama: The Climactic Battle of the Civil Rights Revolution. By Diane McWhorter. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 57 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $19.99; digital list price $14.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Simon & Schuster. 720 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Carry-Home-Bir...hts+Revolution.

Book Description
Now with a new afterword, the Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatic account of the civil rights era’s climactic battle in Birmingham as the movement, led by Martin Luther King, Jr., brought down the institutions of segregation.

"The Year of Birmingham," 1963, was a cataclysmic turning point in America’s long civil rights struggle. Child demonstrators faced down police dogs and fire hoses in huge nonviolent marches against segregation. Ku Klux Klansmen retaliated by bombing the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, killing four young black girls. Diane McWhorter, daughter of a prominent Birmingham family, weaves together police and FBI records, archival documents, interviews with black activists and Klansmen, and personal memories into an extraordinary narrative of the personalities and events that brought about America’s second emancipation.

In a new afterword—reporting last encounters with hero Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth and describing the current drastic anti-immigration laws in Alabama—the author demonstrates that Alabama remains a civil rights crucible.

BIG Biography of Harry Houdini, at a HUGE Markdown (to $1.99).

The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero. By William Kalush; Larry Sloman. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 105 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $19.99; digital list(?) price $10.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Simon and Schuster Digital Sales Inc, publisher. 608 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Life-Ho...irst+Superhero.

Book Description
Handcuff King. Escape Artist. International Superstar.

Since his death eighty-eight years ago, Harry Houdini’s life has been chronicled in books, in film, and on television. Now, in this groundbreaking biography, renowned magic expert William Kalush and bestselling writer Larry Sloman team up to find the man behind the myth. Drawing from millions of pages of research, they describe in vivid detail the passions that drove Houdini to perform ever-more-dangerous feats, his secret life as a spy, and a pernicious plot to subvert his legacy.

The Secret Life of Houdini traces the arc of the master magician’s life from desperate poverty to worldwide fame—his legacy later threatened by a group of fanatical Spiritualists led by esteemed British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Initiating the reader along the way into the arcane world of professional magic, Kalush and Sloman decode a life based on deception, providing an intimate and riveting portrayal of Houdini, the man and the legend.

I just checked this one, and it's up to $9.99.

As far as the first book is concerned, I noticed that it had been marked down only a few cents, a few times, in the 2 1/2 years prior to last October (when it briefly was marked down to $0.00). Maybe the publisher or whoever is going to be offering it for free more often than they have in the past. Anyway, I'll "keep my eyes pealed" for the next markdown on that one and this algebra one, too. Also, you might want to consider going to ereaderiq.com and setting a price alert; if you do that, they will notify you when the book hits that price target that you've set.

I regret that these books didn't stay marked down very long after I posted them.

$2.99 (an 83% Markdown)--History Ebook about Lost Wages & Other Places Out Thata Way.

The Whispersync audio is only $3.99.

This is one of 18 non-fiction books on sale by Amazon under the banner of "monthly deals," for $3.99 and under. They are advertised as Random House imprints, but this one, below, at least, is not (Nation Books is an independent publisher). You can see all of the (not just the non-fiction) deals here.

Unreal City: Las Vegas, Black Mesa, and the Fate of the West. By Judith Nies. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 27 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $25.99; digital list price $17.99; Kindle price now $2.99. Nation Books, publisher. 322 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Unreal-City-Ve...te+of+the+West.

Book Description
An epic struggle over land, water, and power is erupting in the American West and the halls of Washington, DC. It began when a 4,000-square-mile area of Arizona desert called Black Mesa was divided between the Hopi and Navajo tribes. To the outside world, it was a land struggle between two fractious Indian tribes; to political insiders and energy corporations, it was a divide-and-conquer play for the 21 billion tons of coal beneath Black Mesa. Today, that coal powers cheap electricity for Los Angeles, a new water aqueduct into Phoenix, and the neon dazzle of Las Vegas.

Journalist and historian Judith Nies has been tracking this story for nearly four decades. She follows the money and tells us the true story of wealth and water, mendacity, and corruption at the highest levels of business and government. Amid the backdrop of the breathtaking desert landscape,
Unreal City shows five cultures colliding—Hopi, Navajo, global energy corporations, Mormons, and US government agencies—resulting in a battle over resources and the future of the West.

Las Vegas may attract 39 million visitors a year, but the tourists mesmerized by the dancing water fountains at the Bellagio don’t ask where the water comes from. They don’t see a city with the nation’s highest rates of foreclosure, unemployment, and suicide. They don’t see the astonishing drop in the water level of Lake Mead—where Sin City gets 90 percent of its water supply.

Nies shows how the struggle over Black Mesa lands is an example of a global phenomenon in which giant transnational corporations have the power to separate indigenous people from their energy-rich lands with the help of host governments.
Unreal City explores how and why resources have been taken from native lands, what it means in an era of climate change, and why, in this city divorced from nature, the only thing more powerful than money is water.

Two freebies from Morgan James, a publisher that I hadn't heard of before stumbling on these:

It's far from obvious from the title, but the book is entrepreneurial self-help.

Ah . . . . that's because Morgan James Publisher is a division of Morgan James, LLC. I'm sure that that information helps. ha.

That is just one of the little tidbits that I learned while "chasing rabbits" as I am (regrettably) wont to do. Another one: MJP seems to be a publisher doing business somewhere between the traditional publishing model and the self publishing model. There may be some name for this type of publishing; I am no expert on book publishing (nor much of anything else for that matter. ha). And MJP seems to want to convey the idea that what they do is unique and doesn't say, as far as I can tell, if there is a customary label for that type of publishing. If Mobilereaders wish to read all of the fascinating (yes, I'm being facetious) details, go to http://www.morganjamespublishing.com/compare and scroll down about 2/3 of a page.

Morgan James claims "Many major houses require authors to purchase 5,000 copies, or more, of the book upon its release, usually at a 50-60% discount off retail", which is something I've never heard any author mention at any of the SF conventions I attend. I'm not sure which "Traditional Publishers" they are referring to, but I doubt it's any of the BPHs.

In fact, the closest I've ever heard about authors buying copies of their books is when Sharon Miller and Steven Lee went cross-country to recover their books when Meisha Merlin went out of business, and a discussion with Bruce Bethke where his coauthor Vox Day bought all of the excess copies of Rebel Moon rather than allow it to be remaindered, and when Day's parents got divorced, they called Bethke and asked him to take the copies in their basement because Day was living in Italy at the time.

Maybe it would be closer to the truth to say that they are a modified type of self publisher, then, and not something truly different from both traditional publishers and self publishers?

Thanks. I've learned a lot from fellow Mobilereaders.

It's not something I've ever heard of. Morgan James don't appear to be much better than the "many major houses" though. They require the author to buy 2,500 copies of their book:

There are a number of such publishers around. Another quite large one which uses a similar business model is Endeavour Press. It's essentially today's equivalent of the old "Vanity Press" publishers.
