A lot of the time, problems with a given problem are because of something else installed on the computer. Something else is unstable and it's causing the problem a different program is having.

We have seen this in the Calibre forums many times.

It does not follow that just because it works for you, it works for everyone else. Sometimes it's just on account of Magical Things Happening, and good luck debugging a closed-source program.

They don't make Nook for Linux. I've been told that told Play On (something) and Wine would allow me to install Nook for PC, but that's convoluted when all Barnes & Noble really had to do is to just let me download it from my account, like I always did. That would have been the simplest solution. As is, B&N is either going to get none of my business or very little of it. I don't like it when it a company makes it harder to use their service. I don't like jumping through hoops to buy a company's product. I'll just shop elsewhere. Problem solved.

Except that many people still retain the ability to download from Amazon directly (no reader software necessary). So yes... there's a difference, Jon. Quite a big one in fact. B&N has taken away something from Nook device owners that Kindle device owners still have--the ability to download their books without the need for a special "download manager." It's OK to not care about that difference, but it's silly and disingenous to pretend one doesn't exist (simply because it doesn't affect you).

After all this talk of K4PC I decided to download the books I grabbed for free over the last few weeks. Several titles wouldn't download. One in particular gave me a Runtime error causing K4PC to crash. After my 3rd crash I called Kindle tech support. He had me reinstall K4PC using the Windows Store link. He told me to use it. It did give me a Win7 program to download. After 30 minutes on the phone and no resolution, CS told me to buy it again at $4.99 and he gave me a $4.99 credit to compensate. All this effort for a free book I'll probably never read. However, the repeated Runtime errors did worry me which prompted my call.

Hmm, interesting -- I hadn't noticed that. I guess Amazon is trying to encourage people to switch to the Metro app, but doesn't want to cut off Win7 users.

This runs the risk of making knowledgeable people assume the link is a Metro app and not clicking on it on their Win7 PC...

I would assume they look for a user-agent string containing the platform token "Windows NT 6.3" indicating Windows 8, which should be the same on Win8 PC and WinRT. Why would they suggest the PC version on a Win8 PC?

Could it depend on which browser is used on Win8 - so if you use the metro (or whatever it's called now...modern?) browser, get the metro app and if you use a desktop browser, get the "proper" K4PC?
