Hey, I am all for freebies. And I still do grab stuff I think I will actually read. It's the "uh maybe" stuff I've learned to avoid. If I miss out, oh well.

If I'm really on the fence about a book, I go ahead and click. Then I wait a week or so and only download it/add to Calibre if I feel it really makes the cut. That added wait time runs about an 75% delete / 25% keep ratio.

But you only need to go through and cull your digital libray once to cure yourself of the oh pretty, click...ooh click-itis. I really don't think you can reach the stage where you don't click on nearly all of it without going through the uh-what-was-I-thinking stage.

There is a script that makes it so you can batch delete on the Manage Your Kindle page.

http://pepa.info/check-and-delete/

I tried this out and it works much better than the script I had posted earlier. No need to install an extension with this one.

All of this organizing talk got me to clean up my kindle. I have two types of books--paid or free I get from Amazon, and epub that I get from everywhere else and convert in Calibre.

I had close to 5000 books on my kindle fire, and still had 2 G left, but it was running really, really slow. Tried hooking it up to my computer and deleting files, but after I disconnected and rebooted, they were still there. So, I took a big girl breath, and reset my kindle to factory settings.

I should mention a lot of work already went into my Calibre library. First, I have a virtual library of EPUB, so I can see what I have purchased or gotten from the library (most of Amazon is free). Some time ago, I started downloading all my books into k4pc, and was putting them into Calibre. Unfortunately, I was also downloading them on my kindle.

Here is the weird part. I took Blossom's advice, and went into my media library and cleaned up a lot of books. I moved them to trash, so I could always get them back. But they are still in the cloud, and I am able to download them. As crazy as that sounds, I just did a test. I went into manage my kindle, and searched for book X. It did not find it. But then I went to the cloud on my kindle and searched for book X. It came up and I was able to download it.

Anyway, that wonderful grid view KG did on Calibre saved my life. I didn't want all those epubs, either (especially the several hundred I bought for 5 cents at the Harlequin sale a few years ago). But I love to judge a book by its cover, and spent about 5 hours last night, picking books to load on my kindle. Just the first book in a series, or a couple books from my favorite authors. I found a lot of books I was really excited to get, but forgot about (Flaming Alphabet). So I downloaded maybe a thousand, and transferred them to my kindle. But since I usually sent those books in my kindle by email through Calibre, they are all stored in the cloud under Docs.

I have 3 virtual libraries in Calibre. Already Read, TBR (and they move automatically when I add 0read0 (my tag for books that have been read) to the book), and EPUB. I may create contemporary romance, regency romance, mysteries, thrillers, cookbooks (all the categories I have on my PW). But I finally feel like I am in control once again.

I too started with ebooks in 2008. Luckily, I took the time to put categorize them in Calibre, and then to further refine the tags. I really wouldn't be this happy with my kindle if I hadn't found Mobileread and Calibre! I think it is time to donate again (I have twice already). Next to Quicken, the most useful piece of software on my computer.

I know, right? That's happened to me too! But I've also had the opposite happen, where I got a book as a freebie that ended up way up the lists too so, now if something even looks appealing, I grab it [for free].

Blossom, Loosheesh, look at it this way, you should both be done by the end of the month!

ETA, oh dear, after reading SydneysMoms post, [way to go by the way, you sound extra-organized! which I envy and admire! ], I'm wondering, if I do buy a KPW can't I just sync thru Calibre which books I want on it like I do with my T1?

Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom (Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom #1) - Julie Kenner (J. Kenner)
-This book has been published by: Thorndike Press (2005), Berkley Trade (2005), Jove (2006)
-Author has published with many publishers
-Paranormal Romance/Romantic Comedy
Quote:
From Publishers Weekly:
What would happen if Buffy the Vampire Slayer got married, moved to the suburbs and became a stay-at-home mom? She'd be a lot like Kate Connor, once a demon/vampire/zombie killer and now "a glorified chauffeur for drill-team practice and Gymboree play dates" in San Diablo, Calif., that's what. But in Kenner's sprightly, fast-paced ode to kick-ass housewives, Kate finds herself battling evil once again. First a demon tries to kill Kate while she's making rigatoni for an important dinner party that her sweet second husband, Stuart, has scheduled—at the last possible minute—to butter up potential allies in his run for county attorney. Kate dispatches the demon handily enough, but she learns that Goramesh, one of the terrible High Demons, has come to town looking for something. Where's he hiding and what does he want? Can she defeat him without exposing her past to Stuart—and without putting two-year-old Timmy in day care? Though Kenner starts off her story by dropping so many brand names the book reads like a how-to manual for product placement, she settles down to the action soon enough, and readers will find spunky Kate hard not to root for in spheres both domestic and demonic.
Myriah Fire - Claudy Conn-----Also @ Smashwords
-This book was originally published by Fawcett in 1978 (now has added material?)
-Author has published with Fawcett, Zebra, etc. And also under the names Claudette Williams/Melanie Davis
-Regency Romance
Quote:
It started with a stolen kiss …
Fiery Myriah Whitney is wild of nature, contrary, and independent. But when her father catches her kissing the handsome Sir Roland (how else is she to determine if he is the one who will make her feel thunder and lightning, hear bells and music?), he declares that her days of headstrong independence are over. She will, he commands, announce her engagement to Sir Roland—immediately.

But in an age where marriages are about alliances rather than affection, practicality not passion, Myriah wants more—she wants to fall in love. And she does not love Sir Roland. So she runs away to her grandfather with her faithful manservant, Tabson, at her side.

A wrong turn in the fog, however, leads to the discovery of an injured young man, and before she knows it Myriah is caught up in world of intrigue and secrets. And when she meets the young man’s older brother, the mysterious Lord Kit Wimborne, the sparks fly. Their first encounter—in his bed, both of them naked, no less!—is an explosion of wills, and it is what finally set Myriah on fire.

She has, it seems, finally found her thunder and lightning…
Regarding the additions to this edition of the book, a review on Amazon says:
Quote:
The addition of unbridled sexual passion to Myriah Fire's strong story brings dimensions of maturity and depth to the struggles faced by Myriah and Kit, without diminishing any of the innocence, joy or charm found in the original story. This revised version of Myriah Fire allows Claudy's regency followers to appreciate what her paranormal romance fans have discovered -mind bending eroticism.
Off Sides - Sawyer Bennett-----Also @ Smashwords
-First Book in a series, but can be read as a stand alone.
-New Adult, Contemporary
-This was mentioned here before (not free at the time), I believe several people bought it as well.
-Tons of reviews on Amazon and Goodreads
Quote:
“I'm not sure what possessed me to do it. Maybe it was the impossible expectations I faced, maybe it was my own self-loathing. But I just knew I needed something different to happen. I needed someone...something...to derail me from my current path. Otherwise, I would become lost...a hollowed out shell of a man. So I did it. I approached her, then I pursued her, then I made her mine. And my life was saved...”

Ryan Burnham is the privileged son of a U.S. Congressman and captain of his university’s hockey team. While he is on the verge of fulfilling his dreams to play in the NHL, his parents want him on a different course. One he is expected to accept for the sake of his family’s public image.

Forced to abandon her music career after the heart breaking death of her parents, Danny Cross exists on the opposite side of the tracks from Ryan. She is struggling to make her own way, working two jobs, attending college part time and volunteering in a homeless shelter. She is on a mission to build her own success.

With a chance meeting, their vastly different worlds collide, causing each to evaluate whether they are truly on the correct path to self-fulfillment and happiness. Can their relationship survive? Particularly when others are against them every step of the way. A lot can happen in just ten short days...

I think knowing I paid "too" much for a book would just depress me. I have enough issues knowing all my HAD to have agency authors are now on sale. I really don't mind for the ones I read on release day or right away (which is probably 90% of them). It's the 10% that still sit unread on my device that give me issues.

My Calibre library is highly organized; I just have 'too much' library

I love my virtual libraries:
  • Audiobooks
  • Completed Books
  • Free Unread Books (this is what I want to Prune, Prune, Prune!)
  • Georgette Heyer Challenge (my challenge to all read all 57 GH novels; I have only 40 left to read )
  • Reviewed on Goodreads (I have a user column in which I store any reviews/quick thoughts I post to my books on GR [in case they ever shut down ])
  • The Classics Club (my personal challenge to read 75 classics in 5 years)
  • To Review (for review copies that I request)
  • True TBR List (unread paid books)
  • Unowned Books (loaner books I'm currently reading or books I plan to check out of the library)

My Calibre library is a mix of actual ebooks and "empty books" (print books, audiobooks, loaner books, wishlist books, etc).

I thought about making an empty Calibre library for my print books. But then I look at my bookshelves, see how many books that would really involve, and say to myself that would be time better spent actually reading

I have a relatively small print books collection. When we moved into our home four years ago I did a serious cull of my print books, plus I go through them about once a year to get rid of stuff I'm sure I don't want anymore (though if I leave the donation bag/box lying around too long, chances are the books will end up back on my shelves one at a time ).

Oh, good luck to you. I'm sure being asleep through it will help a lot. Hope they give you some wonderful pain medication to help after too.
