I finished Spin last weekend, and it was great. Also, it can stand alone and has a satisfying ending.

Look at this price. Do they think I am going to pay it?

I almost always go for remainders over paperbacks because they are cheaper. Hence the space problem...

Me, too. Books multi-rowed on shelves, books in closets, books in boxes in an off-site storage facility...

I go for remainders because I want durable reading copies, and I've been gradually replacing some older PBs with HC editions. the fact that remainders are cheaper helps, but isn't the main motivation.

Well, they hope you'll pay it.

But first, you have to have a Kindle...

I see Amazon using its market position to leverage things. You get better pricing on ebooks from them than anywhere else, but only if you buy a Kindle to read them with.

It will certainly sell Kindles, but that sort of vendor lock in is one of the reasons most of us want ebook standards, so we can buy an ebook and read it on whatever we happen to have.

How many books must you buy at Amazon's discounted price to amortize the cost of the reader to read them? Don't know off hand, but until you've bought that number, your total costs don't really start to drop.

There are very few books I'm willing to buy in paper now. In a few cases, where there are no ebook versions available, I'll buy or plan to buy a used edition as the price drops, to cover an electronic copy obtained "elsewhere." But I have extremely limited shelf space, so only my very favorites go on the shelves. (They go on the iLiad, as well.) Everything else is ebooks only, often with the paper originals in boxes in the basement. This summer I hope to finish inventorying the basement boxes so I can verify my ebook replacement project status.

The free books are separate from the newsletter. I got my free book on Friday and the newsletter on the weekend.

I'm eagerly collecting all of the Tor ebook signups - but I'm finding myself not eagerly reading them. So many of them are part of a series and I have no desire to buy them in hardcopy - first because I hate mixing formats in a series and second that I just find myself not wanting to deal with physical books usually.

So I really hope that part of the new launch will be the availablity of much of their catalogue for purchase. Otherwise, no matter how shiny the new site is, I'll consider the whole thing a bit of a failure

Only a couple of the Tor free offerings have interested me, I can't complain about the price however.
