Is Apple betting the farm on the new iPad (iPad3 or iPadHD or ?)?

I'm trying to work out from the thread wether Jobs was a copy artist with no skills other than marketing or a product genius whose absence will inevitably destroy Apple. Both opinions are put forward and appear mutually exclusive to me

He then marketed highly marked up units which were aesthetically pleasing and reliable but short on features to a market group who became convinced either that owning his stripped down units made them special, or that giving up features for hassle free operation was the right choice for them.

To replace Jobs, Apple has to find another marketing genius who doesn't leave out a feature that the gadget market decides is a must have, and they have to manage to detirmine this consistantly.

Apple's new iPad is off to a record start before it's even been released, setting the stage for the company to sell a projected 66 million total units in 2012.

Analyst Michael Walkley with Canaccord Genuity raised his price target for Apple stock on Wednesday to $710, from $665. He said his own checks with Apple's distribution channels have indicated that the new iPad, just announced a week ago, has already broken the company's preorder records.

New orders from Apple's online store now take up to three weeks to ship in the U.S., which Walkley believes is another sign that the new iPad will achieve record sales when it goes on sale in 10 countries this Friday at 8 a.m. local time.

The analyst also believes that Apple's competitors will continue to struggle to introduce competitive products over the coming quarters. He noted that at this year's Consumer Electronics Show and Mobile World Congress conferences, most Android manufacturers "essentially conceded the high-end tablet market to Apple in the near term."

Accordingly, he expects that Apple will sell 65.6 million iPads in 2012, a projection nearly 10 million units higher than his previous forecast of 55.9 million.

I think the fact that they've sold out and already have a 2~3 week backlog online for the new iPad says a lot. I'm pretty sure Apple manufactured a lot more 3rd gen iPads this time around than they did the iPad 2 upon release.

I have read Apple is maybe somewhat supply constrained on the new HD displays.

In other news, AAPL briefly hit 600 today. That's almost double their 52 week low.

They have just announced that they will release them in 25 additional countries. I am sure they have kept limited supplies in the US to have some stock available in each of these.

And yes, time to think about selling that Apple stock, 600+ is just cracy. No matter how well the iPad does.

I agree with this in part, but I'm suspicious of the idea that "jettisoning" the correct features automatically meant an increase in durability and stability, and that that's all Apple was ever really doing.

It seems to me that durability, stability and minimalism are often three separate aspects of an Apple product, especially in models designed for higher end users (read: professionals in the arts). There was a time when gamma correction was only available on the mac, as were Photoshop, ProTools and a number of other applications. Given the overwhelmingly superior amount of software available for Windows at any point, that's a distinctive little niche.

Jobs could afford to think of the features separately because Apple's products usually cost more than everyone else's. Still, I can agree that your premise applied to him part of the time.

I'm not sure that a fashion designer (and Jobs reminded me of one) decides to leave the pocket off a man's dress shirt solely to save money. That can be a minor aspect of the decision, but it's more likely they're thinking of a cleaner shape, or accentuating a fabric or tight-fitting cut.

I'm with you on certain decisions, though. Removing the disc drive: durability and cost (for Apple). Internal battery: Durability, form and the inevitability of either premium servicing at a price or built-in obsolescence in the practical sense. And that's only the beginning.

The inner workings of the iPad are similar to previous models, based on a “teardown” by a tinkerer from California gadget-repair firm iFixit, who queued up in Australia to get one of the new tablets and quickly took it apart for a Web blog.
