Let's keep something important in mind here. Amazon made their MobiPocket version incompatible with other book vendors and readers by changing ONE BIT in the pre-encrypted DRM info. Yes, one bit—the only purpose of which is to make it incompatible. It's pretty clear they aren't interested in interoperating.
Today, with an Android tablet, I can sit on the beach (right outside my front door), check out a book from the library, and read it right there. No need for a computer, or DRM removal scripts, or kindlegen. It's awesome. I have two Kindles, and I use them all the time, but I don't think I'll be buying another until Amazon starts playing the same game. |

What does that have to do with the price of tea in Tibet? There were plenty of other vendors who were selling MobiPocket books, and supplying MobiPocket readers, long before the Kindle came out. It may even be that Amazon's abandonment and isolation from everyone else was part of the incentive for creating ePub in the first place.

It happened shortly after Amazon bought out Mobipocket. Bookeen had already released the Cybook, which supported MOBI DRM - and wanted to add ADE support. Mobipocket told them it was one or the other, and as Amazon was already deprecating support for MOBI in favor of Kindle and AZW, they went with ADE ePub and that was that. Libraries were already dealing with Adobe because of PDF - and with MOBI getting much less support than Kindle, it just made sense to move to ePub. |

Having said that, there's no real reason to use MOBI these days. The official reader hasn't been updated since April 2008 - and they don't support either iOS or Android. Modern MOBI is Kindle, and Amazon has chosen not to support libraries. |

But epub is open source, no fees unless you use Adobe's DRM then you have to pay Adobe money. B&N DRM does not require a server to authorise the ebook each time you put it on a device. Also why would other vendors go with the mobi format, it has not changed for over 10 years.. (still html3.2) while epub is a more advance system allowing for more features in the formatting of the ebook. Soon we will have epub3 which allows even more styling and better layout for ebooks, while Amazon has not reported any plans to develop mobi beyond what it is now. |

I'm a tax-payer. I pay for the library. Overdrive does not pay for the library in my locality (Overdrive does not have offices in my neighborhood). *Yes*, they're providing a service, but that service does *not* give them the right to come between me and my library books. Overdrive does that for the benefit of the publishers, not for the benefit of the library patrons. If ebooks are going to be offered in libraries, then the publishers (and Overdrive) do not have the right to dictate what sort of ereader I have to buy in order to make use of the library. It's *my* facility (and the facility of the other people in my neighborhood), not theirs. Corporations do NOT have the right (at least in the US) to deny explicit rights by wrapping their products up in protective technologies meant to control their use _after_ purchase. Except, of course, that they've been buying that ability from Congress. It doesn't make it any less illegal and immoral. That all said, I understand why Amazon doesn't have epub support in kindles. I do "wish" they did (and it would be nice if they would eventually approve an epub "app"), but I understand why they don't. At this point, it's on me to make other arrangements. |

OT: Katie, regarding your signature line, have you considered just setting your browser to show you everything in bold rather than trying to tell everyone else what to do?

If you're using Firefox, pushing the "ctrl" key and the "+" key at the same time will make the type bigger. "Ctrl" and "-" makes it smaller. Maybe this works on other browsers, too, but I don't know. Also, just out of curiosity, doesn't the italicization make it harder to read? Edit: Works on Internet Explorer and Chrome also. Last edited by corona; 04-10-2011 at 03:45 PM. |
