"Take the money and let the credit walk."

~Grammy's uncle Tommy "Spot Cash" Flanagan, who totally sounds like he was in the Irish mob.

It reminds me of Edward Fitzgerald's translation of Omar Khayyam

“Some for the Glories of This World; and some
Sigh for the Prophet's Paradise to come;
Ah, take the Cash, and let the Credit go,
Nor heed the rumble of a distant Drum!”

In some ways I prefer Tommy's take.

And there's always:
Money talks, bulls**t walks

The corollary of the Big Lie:
"All this was inspired by the principle—which is quite true within itself—that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.
It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying." Hitler, Mein Kampf
Hitler had a good understanding of human nature, including those parts that he could exploit. As long as there are people who are clever enough to grasp what he did and ruthless enough to exploit it, we will have to be on our guard. That's a lot harder than it sounds, because most people would rather not believe that they are so vulnerable. We are made for tragedy.

Not sure how I actually feel about the book overall, but there were some good one-liners to be sure.

art quotes

All men are in some degree impressed by the face of the world; some men even to delight. This love of beauty is Taste. Others have the same love in such excess, that, not content with admiring, they seek to embody it in new forms. The creation of beauty is Art.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"How great was the humiliation when one who stood beside me heard the distant sound of a shepherd's pipe, and I heard nothing; or heard the shepherd singing, and I heard nothing. Such experiences brought me to the verge of despair; but little more and I should have put an end to my life. Art, art alone deterred me. It seemed unthinkable for me to leave the world forever before I had produced all that I felt called upon to produce."
- Ludwig van Beethoven

"We work in the dark--we do what we can--we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art."
- Henry James

"I am concerned with social and environmental issues. What rational person is not? But advocacy and art do not mix. Art is a seduction. Good art invites the reader to think and feel deeply and come to his/her own conclusions."
- T.C. Boyle

"The whole culture is telling you to hurry, while the art tells you to take your time. Always listen to the art."
- Juno Diaz

“The true artist has no pride. He sees unfortunately that art has no limits; he has a vague awareness of how far he is from reaching his goal; and while others may perhaps admire him, he laments the fact that he has not yet reached the point whither his better genius only lights the way for him like a distant sun.”
- Ludwig van Beethoven

“My art, no matter how transient is a dagger in the heart of darkness.”

'Love is a thing of accident, it exists in itself, like art, and, like nature, needs no reasons to justify it, as some clever man has said who never loved, himself, but made excellent observations upon love.'

from A Desperate Character, and Other Stories by Ivan Turgenev, translated by Constance Garnett.
