I don't think I can quite do this yet. She has another year of high school to go. As much as she drives me crazy sometimes, I really think we need to keep her under a roof at least until she graduates.

I mentioned to her at one point that after graduation, whether or not she has to pay rent to stay with us will depend on her attitude. She thought I was kidding at first, and got pretty upset when I explained that I wasn't, really. But I needed to have some boundaries in my own mind to be able to make it through the next year (2 years at the time) and I didn't think it would be fair to spring it on her suddenly the day after graduation. And I don't think we'd be doing her any favors, long-term, if we let her think her current behavior toward us is ok.

When I was 15, I left my mother's house to go live with my father in order to change school systems, and hopefully get away from my brother and my stepfather, who was an ok guy, but we didn't get along. My mother told me she was letting me go because she thought I was old enough to take care of myself. What neither of us took into account was that my brother (three years younger) would follow me, and I wasn't really old enough to take care of both of us (though he still credits me with raising him).

I wasn't financially independent at that point, but probably could have arranged to be if necessary. My 18 year old is neither financially independent nor mature enough to take care of herself. It may be worth mentioning that she's only been in the US for 6 years, and had virtually no schooling in China. She's quite bright, but we've kind of been building from the ground up, especially when it comes to common sense.

Just got home from a party which was thrown by a drinking buddy of mine (he and I have been known to kill several bottles of wine and talk into the wee hours of the morning ... about what, we generally can't remember the next day).

Anyway, this was a party to celebrate her birthday, and to sort of christen their new house (in Lakeway, which is near Austin), and for him to propose to her.

The new house is roughly 10,000 square feet, with an additional 5,000 of deck space, pool, sauna, steam room, six car garage (oh, and the 10,000 square feet does not include the garage). So, basically eeeek!!

I adore his girlfriend ... now finance .... and so I'm really happy to see him getting married to her. But, anyway, her ex-husband (another multi-millionaire type) was also at the party. He is getting into competitive ballroom dancing, so he had his dance partner with him and they did a whole floor show for us. Great dancing.

I didn't want to drink because I knew I would be driving home, so I just had coke after coke after coke .... which resulted in a caffeine buzz so high I talked non-stop all night. However, I am crashing now, so off to bed.
